Buy ticket for Sachin Tendulkar's 200th and get a free copy of The Journey of Tendulkar to Centurykar

October 27, 2013

Tendulkar_to_CenturykarMumbai, Oct 27: Get hold of a ticket (or a complimentary pass!) to Sachin Tendulkar’s 200th and final Test at the Wankhede next month, and you will receive a free copy of The Journey of Tendulkar to Centurykar, a 125-page compilation of the batting legend’s 100 international hundreds.

Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) president Sharad Pawar recently announced that a Nagpur-based publishing was keen on printing and distributing 40,000 copies of the book during the second Test between India and the West Indies from November 14-18. A few days ago, the association requested Kiran Mahadeokar, the proprietor of Kavita Enterprises and the brains behind the book, to go ahead with the project.

Mahadeokar, a 60-year-old cricket fanatic from the Orange City, is not charging the MCA a single penny. “I am doing this for Sachin,” Mahadeokar, 60, says. “A few corporate houses have agreed to help. If all goes well, I will supply the MCA with 40,000 copies a few days before the start of the Test.”

“I want the cricket-loving public to read about Tendulkar’s achievements. In the book, I have provided a detailed account of each of his 100 centuries for India. The book is also peppered with quotes and comments from several legendary cricketers like Garfield Sobers, Viv Richards, Sunil Gavaskar, Ricky Ponting, Shane Warne, Graeme Pollock and Tendulkar himself.

So what inspired Mahadeokar? Here’s the story. The year was 1998 and Tendulkar was at the peak of his powers. The maestro’s haul 2,541 international runs and 12 centuries in a calendar year convinced Mahadeokar that the little man would set some “unbreakable records”.

And soon after Tendulkar’s twin hundreds in Sharjah, he started collecting newspaper and magazine cuttings.

That hundred in the final against Australia was Tendulkar’s 31st. But Mahadeokar was sure Tendulkar would scale the Mount Everest of cricket. “Once he scored his 99th hundred in the 2011 World Cup, I decided it was time. The 100th hundred was a given,” he says.

Tendulkar took a little more than a year to scored the landmark ton. “Three months later, I released my book in Nagpur. I distributed nearly 25,000 copies for free. Recently, I met Mr Sharad Pawar and he was delighted to see the book. And I am glad he has allowed me to distribute the book to the Wankhede crowd,” Mahadeokar adds.

Mumbai, Jan 13: India captain Virat Kohli indicated at dropping himself down the batting order to accommodate both Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul in the playing XI against Australia in the first ODI of the three-match series starting Tuesday.

With vice-captain Rohit Sharma an automatic pick, the team management is left with tough choice of selecting either Dhawan or Rahul in the XI. But the skipper sees no reason why both can't play together.

"Look, a guy in form is always good for the team. ...You obviously want to have the best players available and then chose from what the combination should be for the team. There might be a possibility that all three (Rohit, Shikhar and Rahul) might play. It will be interesting to see what balance we want to take in on the field," Kohli said on the eve of the match.

Asked if he would he be happy to bat lower down the order, Virat said,"Yeah, big possibility. I would be very happy to do so. Look I am not possessive about where I play. I am not insecure about where I bat," said the skipper.

For Kohli, it is more important as to what kind of leadership legacy he leaves behind rather than chase personal glory.

"Being the captain of the team, it is my job to make sure that the next lot is also ready. A lot of the other people might not look at it that way, but your job as a captain is not only to look after the team right now, but also to prepare a team that you leave behind when you eventually pass it onto someone else," he added.

Chennai, Jan 26: Former India cricketer Kapil Dev on Saturday said that it will be a big loss for the Indian side when MS Dhoni decides to hang up his boots.

"I think he has served the country so well and nobody has done it like him. Everyone has to retire sooner or later. He is not playing matches currently. So I don't know when he will come out one day and say -- I have had enough. I think it will be our loss because he is such a fabulous cricketer," Dev told reporters here.

In the recently released BCCI contracts list, Dhoni did not find a place for himself. The former World Cup winning captain Dev said that it is unfortunate that Dhoni was not included in the contract list.

"I feel sorry that they have not included him.

Tendulkar, Gavaskar had to witness the same. It's not my job and I am not there to give the contract to anyone. It is the job of the cricket board. So, I don't know. You can ask this question to the cricket board. They will be able to answer this question," Dev said.

The 38-year-old Dhoni is currently enjoying some time away from the game. He last played competitive cricket during the 2019 World Cup.

Dhoni had to face criticism for his slow batting approach during India's matches in the tournament.

Especially in the games against England and New Zealand (semi-final), he had to bear the brunt of netizens, who deemed him as the reason for the Men in Blue's loss.

BCCI released the list of central contract list of players for the period from October 2019 to September 2020.

New Delhi, Apr 28: IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore's Director of Cricket Operations Mike Hesson returned to New Zealand on Tuesday after being stranded in India for over a month amid the nationwide lockdown to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ex-New Zealand player and coach had arrived in India on March 5 for the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League but was stuck in the country after the lockdown was imposed and all flights were suspended.

"What a wonderful sight after spending over a day on a bus to get to Mumbai airport. The staff on @FlyAirNZ were simply outstanding on our return to New Zealand," Hesson tweeted.

He also thanked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the New Zealand Embassy in India, New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

"Special thanks to Down pointing backhand index @NZinIndia @MFATNZ @narendramodi @jacindaardern #repatriationflight #india #NZ" he added.

To stem the spread of the coronavirus outbreak, India and New Zealand had announced lockdowns in their respective countries last month, alongside travel restrictions, forcing the 45-year-old to stay in Bengaluru.

While India remains in lockdown till May 3, New Zealand eased its stringent measures on Tuesday.

The IPL, which was originally scheduled to get underway on March 29, has been suspended until further notice due to the pandemic.

The cornavirus outbreak, that originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan, has infected over 30 lakh people across the world while killing more than two lakh.

All sporting events, including the Tokyo Olympics, have either been cancelled or postponed.
