Ind vs WI: Sachin Tendulkar falls for 74 in his farewell Test match

November 15, 2013

Sachin_200Test_matchNew Delhi, Nov 15: West Indies captain Darren Sammy took a good catch at first slip to dismiss Sachin Tendulkar for 74 runs off Narsingh Deonarine on the second day of his farewell Test at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Friday.

Deonarine bowled a flatter delivery outside off and Tendulkar tried to cut it fine, but it bounced extra and the thick edge went quickly towards Sammy at first slip, who took a good catch in front of his face as Tendulkar walked off the field to a thunderous applause and a standing ovation.

Cheteshwar Pujara reached his fourth Test fifty soon after Tendulkar brought up his 68th Test half-century with a trademark straight drive off Tino Best.

This is the 119th time that Tendulkar crossed the 50-run mark in Test cricket - the most by any batsman in Test cricket history.

The day's play started with Cheteshwar Pujara and Tendulkar resuming the Indian first innings.

Tendulkar is looking good but one must not forget the contribution of Pujara in that stand. His quick scoring has ensured that Tendulkar does not get the pressure of the scoreboard. If West Indies do not manage to strike as they did in Kolkata, they might be on the field for a long, long day.

India are in a wonderful position to shut West Indies out of this game, if they manage to play out the whole day. The hosts are more than capable of doing that and will look to rectify the mistakes committed at Kolkata. The West Indies will surely look for an encore.

Day 1 saw yet another indisciplined batting display from West Indies and yet another spin-burst from the Pragyan Ojha-R Ashwin combination, on a track that aided both bounce and spin.

The West Indies were bowled out for 182 runs cheaply earlier and then came a fine start by the Indian openers.

There was a bit of drama after that as two quick wickets brought the big man, Tendulkar to the crease. The scenes, the noise, the atmosphere, everything was stunning as the Master took the center-stage. He played some fantastic strokes and got the crowd going while Pujara also got off to a fine start.

Seldom can an Indian batsman have been as enthusiastically cheered off the pitch in India as Vijay was. The hope of watching Tendulkar bat on the very first day, which had seemed to disappear when MS Dhoni won the toss and opted to field, had unexpectedly come true after all.

Then a compact figure was seen making his way down the stairs, and the noise rose to a whole different level. A chant familiar to every Indian who has watched cricket made itself heard once again, punctuated by hands clapping, and seats, boards and empty bottles banging, all in rhythm.

The crowd stood as one and roared as Sachin made his way to the crease. In a rare gesture, the entire West Indian team lined up to create a path for him; in an even rarer gesture, even the two umpires joined the 'guard of honour', one on either side.

This was, after all, no ordinary occasion. The designated neutral men felt compelled to pay respect to the god of cricket.

Srinagar, Jan 10: Real Kashmir FC made a strong comeback in the second half to play out a 1-1 draw against former champions Punjab FC in their home I-League match here on Friday.

The 'Snow Leopards' equalised in the 62nd minute through Gnohere Krizo in front of a partisan crowd of 8,500 spectators after Makan Chothe had given Punjab FC the lead in the 21st minute at the TRC ground.

After Thursday's draw, Punjab FC is placed third on the table with 10 points from seven games. Real Kashmir FC remained at eighth with six points from five matches. This was Real Kashmir's third home match on the trot.

The match was a story of two halves as the first belonged to the visitors who enjoyed a 62 per cent possession of the ball, whereas the second belonged to the home side.

Both the teams were looking to gain an early advantage and Punjab FC took the lead after 21 minutes.

Confusion inside the Real Kashmir box because of a long ball from Punjab opened up an opportunity for Chothe and he made no mistake as he smashed the ball at the back of the net.

As the fans cheered on, Real Kashmir created a flurry of chances, but none of the home side players could find the back of the net. Punjab was able to hold on to their slender lead heading into the tunnel.

The second half resumed with Real Kashmir pressing high up the field and pressurising Punjab.

In the 56th minute, Real Kashmir playmaker Kallum Higginbotham cut through two defenders on the left side of the box and the ball fell to Mason Robertson, whose shot was too weak to trouble the Punjab goalkeeper.

Soon after, it was Danish Farooq who tried a curler from a distance but his shot did not have enough bend to trouble the Punjab goalkeeper. The home team's effort finally paid off in the 62nd minute.

A miscalculated header by Danilo Augusto fell at the feet of Gnohere Krizo, who was one-on-one with the keeper. He made no mistake in striking the ball into the opponent's goal to score the equaliser.

Real Kashmir was in their groove now, and Kallum came in from the right with a beautiful low cross across the face of the goal but Mason could not get a touch as the chance went begging.

The duo of Kallum and Mason were proving difficult for Punjab to deal with. In the 82nd minute, a beautiful long ball by Kallum found the head of a towering Mason, but the effort went just over the crossbar.

Within a few moments, Punjab again had another nervous moment as Chesterpoul Lyngdoh's cross from the right side hit the arm of Thoiba Singh but the referee turned down an appeal for penalty.

Los Angeles, Feb 14: Tributes to the late Kobe Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers legend who died last month in a helicopter crash, will play a major role in Sunday's 69th NBA All-Star Game.

This year's annual showcase of league talent will be played in Chicago and feature numerous nods to Bryant, a five-time NBA champion who also matched a league record with four NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player awards.

Bryant, an 18-time NBA All-Star, died at age 41 on January 26 in a crash near Los Angeles that also took the life of his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others.

All-Star teams guided by LeBron James of the Lakers and Greek star Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks will compete to win each of the first three quarters, which will all start 0-0 and last 12 minutes.

At the start of the fourth quarter, the clock will be turned off and a final target score will be established by taking the leading club's cumulative score through the first three quarters and adding 24 points -- the number representing the jersey number worn by Bryant for the final 10 seasons of his NBA career.

The first team to reach the cumulative target score will win the NBA All-Star Game.

All-Star Game jerseys will also honor Bryant and his daughter.

Team Giannis players will wear jersey number 24 in tribute to Kobe while Team LeBron players will wear jersey number two, the number his daughter wore when playing youth basketball.

Both teams will wear jersey patches displaying nine stars, representing the nine people who were killed in the crash.

Academy Award-winning actress and Grammy Award-winning singer Jennifer Hudson, a Chicago native, will perform a special tribute to Bryant, his daughter and the others who were killed in the crash. Her performance will begin the night ahead of the player introductions.

James and Antetokounmpo each chose their squads from available starters and reserves voted and selected to the All-Star contest.

Team LeBron starters will include James, his Lakers teammate Anthony Davis, NBA scoring leader James Harden of Houston, Kawhi Leonard of the Los Angeles Clippers and Slovenian guard Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks.

Team Giannis starters include the Greek big man, Cameroon stars Joel Embiid of Philadelphia and Pascal Siakam of Toronto and guards Kemba Walker of Boston and Trae Young of Atlanta.

A record eight All-Star Game players from outside the United States also include Frenchman Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz on Team Giannis and Team LeBron reserves Ben Simmons of Australia and the Philadelphia 76ers, Lithuanian Domantas Sabonis of Indiana and Serbian Nikola Jokic of Denver.
