Mangaluru, Nov 28: Decrying National Highway Authority of India’s apathy in restoring the battered National Highway 66 between Kuloor and Baikampady, Mangaluru North Youth Congress activists on Monday staged a protest demonstration at Honnakatte here.

The protesters, who staged a rasta roko, also played cricket on the battered stretch of the national highway.

Addressing party members, Mangaluru North MLA B.A. Mohiuddin Bava demanded that NHAI stop toll collection forthwith at NITK Surathkal and at BC Road.

Mr Bava said that the NHAI has failed to initiate measures to repair the stretch  on NH-66. “Toll collection at three checkpoints on this highway  is looting people, since no maintenance work is done,” he said.

Stating that the road has been constructed in an unscientific manner and it  takes longer to reach Mangaluru, he said the  road is filled with  potholes  and the authorities have failed to fill the potholes.

Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel who travels on this stretch has neglected the potholes, he lamented.

Mangaluru North Youth Congress president Girish Alva said that a journey of about 15 minutes has now been extended to more than an hour to cover 12 km between Surathkal and Mangaluru, owing to the poor condition of the road.

Though Dakshina Kannada MP is from the BJP, and the BJP being at the helm of affairs at the Centre, the condition of the road has not improved, which is shameful, Mr. Alva said.

District Youth Congress president Mithun Rai said that the wing would protest against collection of toll till the highway and service roads are restored. He said that one would have to doubt how MP Nalin Kumar Kateel was adjudged the best MP considering the pathetic state of the highway in the district headquarters.

New Delhi, Jun 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday sought a discussion on advances in telemedicine, the use of "Make in India" products in the healthcare, and the use of IT tools in the medical sector for a healthier society.

Addressing an event at the Rajiv Gandhi Health University in Bengaluru via video conference, he sought a discussion on whether new models can be conceived that make telemedicine popular on a larger scale.

Referring to the "Make in India" program, he said the initial gains made in this field make him optimistic. "Our domestic manufacturers have started production of personal protective equipment and have supplied about one crore PPEs to those in the frontline of fighting COVID-19.

Modi said IT-related tools for healthier societies can be of great help.

"I am sure you have heard of Arogya Setu. Twelve crore health-conscious people have downloaded it. This has been very helpful in the fight against coronavirus," he said.

Bengaluru, Jul 25: Kalmane Kamegowda, the lake man who was recently praised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a recent Mann Ki Baat, is in serious condition after he tested positive for COVID-19, former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy said on Saturday.

"The health condition of Lake Kamegowda is serious. It is our responsibility to save him. I demand that the state government make appropriate arrangements for emergency treatment," Kumaraswamy tweeted.

"The Prime Minister also praised him in Mann Ki Baat. Chief Ministers expressed appreciation. Only praising doesn't help him at this point of time. The government needs to come forward to treat him in a good hospital when he's sick," he said in the following tweet.

Kamegowda of Dasanadoddi village in Malavalli taluk had drawn the attention of the Prime Minister in the 66th 'Mann Ki Baat' for constructing ponds to conserve rainwater during the summer.

Responding to Kumaraswamy's remark, State Medical Education Minister Dr Sudhakar K said that he has already called up the Mandya Medical College and directed the hospital to admit and treat Kamegowda.

"As soon as I noticed the seriousness of Kamagowad's health, I called the director of the Mandya Medical College and informed him that he should be admitted to the hospital and treated. I pray to the Lord that the Kamagowadas who inspire the whole country will heal soon," Sudhakar K tweeted.
