Kasaragod, Jan 21: A special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has sentenced 21 accused in the Narath arms training camp case to varying years of imprisonments after they were found guilty of offences charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, Arms Act, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

While Special Judge S. Santhosh Kumar awarded seven-year imprisonment to the first accused, the other 20 accused were given five-year jail term each. The court acquitted the 22nd accused in the case.

The prosecution case was that the accused persons, Popular Front of India and Social Democratic Party of India activists, had organised an arms training camp at Narath in Kerala on April 23, 2013. The police had raided the training camp and taken into custody 21 PFI activists at Narath.

The NIA contended that the police officer who arrested the accused overheard the inflammatory speech of P.V. Abdul Azeez, the first accused in the case.

The accused wanted to impart training in weapons and explosives with intention to retaliate against the alleged tortures faced by Muslims in the country.

The court observed that the circumstances showed that the purpose of the assembly was unlawful and the accused could not satisfactorily explain the possession of weapon and country-bombs. Therefore, it could be safely concluded that there was a training camp and the accused were liable to be punished under Sections 18 and 18 A of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.”

The court concluded that the prosecution had succeeded in proving the offences under Section 120 B (Criminal Conspiracy), 143 and 149 (Unlawful assembly) of Indian Penal Code, section 153 A (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) and 153 (B) (1) (C) (Imputations, assertions prejudicial to national-integration) of IPC, section 5 (1) (a) of the Arms Act and under Sections 18 and 18 A of the UAPA.

Bengaluru, Jun 29: A 99-year-old woman has successfully recovered from coronavirus in Bengaluru, leaving the medical fraternity and her family elated.

The woman had contracted the pathogen after coming in contact with her grandson and was hospitalised on her 99th birthday on June 18.

The woman was taken to the government Victoria Hospital along with her 70-year-old son, daughter-in-law and grandson.

"While we three developed symptoms like cold, cough and fever, my mother remained asymptomatic," the woman's son said.

The family members are still wondering how they got infected by the virus as all except the woman's grandson, were confined to their home most of the time.

Her 29-year-old grandson was the only one who went out to buy groceries.

Initially, the family approached a private hospital nearby for treatment, but they refused to accept COVID-19 patients.

Left with no option, the family got admitted to the Victoria hospital.

"We had reservations about Victoria hospital, but it turned out be a good one.

We did not spend a penny since the day we were admitted and my mother and son fully recovered," the woman's son said.

According to Dr Asima Banu, nodal officer of the Trauma Care Centre at the Victoria hospital, the woman was reluctant to get treatment at the hospital.

"With moral support from doctors and nurses at the Trauma Care Centre, she recovered very fast. She is always positive in life," the doctor said.

Bengaluru, Mar 11: Jyotiraditya Scindia has not betrayed the Congress, but he has been betrayed by the Congress and Kamal Nath, said on Wednesday Madhya Pradesh Congress MLAs who are camping here after tendering the resignations.

"It is not Jyotraditya Scindia who has betrayed. Instead, he has been betrayed by the Congress and Kamal Nath. Despite the fact that it was his hard work that enabled Congress to form the government in MP after 15 years, yet he was being sidelined. His people were sidelined," Mahendra Singh Sisodia was heard saying in a video.

Taking a veiled jibe at Chief Minister Nath, Sisodia said: "On one hand, you claim that treasury is empty and on the other, works worth Rs 12,000 crore is done in Chhindwara constituency. Are the rest of MLAs and ministers just killing time?"

He also warned other Congress MLAs that the party would be decimated in the state in the future.

"Did not the Congress trick people in MP? What happened to the farm loan waiver announced? When we go to our region, people ask us what happened to loan-waiver.
What happened to curb corruption, Vyapam? Whichever party Scindia joins, we will go with him," he said.

Former MP Minister Imarti Devi said that all 22 MLAs are in Bengaluru out of their own choice.

"All 22 MLAs are here (in Bengaluru) on their own will. We are happy Scindiaji has taken this decision. I will always stay with him even if I had to jump in a well. Kamal Nathji never heard us," she said.

Another leader dismissed talks of being in touch with anyone and said that they are happy with the decision of Scindia, who joined the BJP earlier today. He had resigned from the Congress on Tuesday.
