NIA court sends 21 PFI activists to jail for holding arms training camp

Kasaragod, Jan 21: A special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has sentenced 21 accused in the Narath arms training camp case to varying years of imprisonments after they were found guilty of offences charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, Arms Act, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

While Special Judge S. Santhosh Kumar awarded seven-year imprisonment to the first accused, the other 20 accused were given five-year jail term each. The court acquitted the 22nd accused in the case.

The prosecution case was that the accused persons, Popular Front of India and Social Democratic Party of India activists, had organised an arms training camp at Narath in Kerala on April 23, 2013. The police had raided the training camp and taken into custody 21 PFI activists at Narath.

The NIA contended that the police officer who arrested the accused overheard the inflammatory speech of P.V. Abdul Azeez, the first accused in the case.

The accused wanted to impart training in weapons and explosives with intention to retaliate against the alleged tortures faced by Muslims in the country.

The court observed that the circumstances showed that the purpose of the assembly was unlawful and the accused could not satisfactorily explain the possession of weapon and country-bombs. Therefore, it could be safely concluded that there was a training camp and the accused were liable to be punished under Sections 18 and 18 A of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.”

The court concluded that the prosecution had succeeded in proving the offences under Section 120 B (Criminal Conspiracy), 143 and 149 (Unlawful assembly) of Indian Penal Code, section 153 A (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) and 153 (B) (1) (C) (Imputations, assertions prejudicial to national-integration) of IPC, section 5 (1) (a) of the Arms Act and under Sections 18 and 18 A of the UAPA.

Mangaluru, Jul 26: Karnataka government has initiated steps to provide insurance cover for priests and others working in temples coming under the Endowment Department -- a move that will benefit 50,000 people and their families.

Speaking to media here on Saturday evening, Minister for Endowment Kota Srinivas Poojary said there is a need to implement the decision at the earliest to provide relief to the priests and families of employees working in temples.

Department officials have been directed to include employees of state-owned temples under the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyothi Bima scheme and also enrol them under State Bank of India’s group personal accident insurance policy at the earliest. The Central insurance scheme will provide Rs 2 lakh cover to family members in case of death due to accidents.

Bengaluru, May 24: A couple got married in Bengaluru today, even as Karnataka government has announced a complete lockdown on Sundays, as part of the fourth phase of COVID-19 shutdown till the end of this month.

The marriage ceremony on this Sunday was possible thanks to a clarification given by the state government for marriages, which has been already scheduled for May 24 and May 31 to be exempted from the Sunday complete lockdown.

At today's wedding, the rituals were performed with compliance of all guidelines including ensuring social distancing and capping the number of guests at 50.

Satish, the groom said, "Government has allowed weddings with up to 50 people in attendance but we decided to invite only 25 people to the ceremony".

Meanwhile, in the Honnali Honnali area of Davanagere, BJP MLA MP Renukacharya distributed masks to three newly-wed couples.

As per an earlier advisory issued by the State government more than 50 guests, no air conditioning, and the consumption of liquor and paan are among the guidelines to be followed for holding weddings in the state. Also, people aged above 65 and below 10 as well as pregnant women have been barred from participating in the event.

According to the advisory, sanitisers should be provided at the entry and other appropriate places at the venue. Also, thermal screening of all persons shall be conducted at the entry of the venue. The scanner should be held 3-15 cms away from a person's forehead.

Apart from this, the venue shall be "clean and hygienic," and a "nodal person shall be identified for overseeing the arrangements and coordination at the venue." Also, a list of attendees with contact details has to be maintained and all guests should have downloaded Aarogya Setu app.

Jan 31: A bunch of fishermen in Kerala is being praised for releasing an endangered shark back into water. A video posted on Twitter shows the fishermen releasing the whale shark that was trapped in their nets back into the sea.

The video was posted on Twitter by InSeason Fish - a group working towards environmental conservation, sustainable fisheries and healthy oceans. Filmed in Kerala's Kozhikode, it shows fishermen on a fishing vessel with the huge whale shark.

Whale sharks are the largest fish in the ocean and can reach up to 40 feet in length. Distinguished by their white spots, this shark is on International Union for Conservation of Nature's list of endangered species.

In the video, at least seven fishermen are seen working together to lift the thrashing whale shark up with the help of ropes and releasing it into the water.
