Ninth Abbakka Utsava from tomorrow

Mangalore, February 10: The stage is set for the ninth edition of Veerarani Abbakka Utsava-2012 that gets underway at Uchila Bovi School ground at Sankolige, Someshwar near here, on Saturday.

While the seven editions were organized by Veerarani Abbakka Utsava Samiti with help and support from philanthropists and donors, the Utsava has received state support in the last two editions, including the current one with a funding of Rs 25 lakh. K Jayaram Shetty, former MLA and president of the reception committee, told reporters here that a grand folk procession from Kotekar Beeri to Utsava venue will mark the beginning of the two-day event.

Energy minister Shobha Karandlaje will inaugurate the festival. A seminar on 'Mathrroopi Samskruthi-Badalavaneya Nelegallu', chaired by Sulochana Narayan, will be held in the afternoon. Higher education minister V S Acharya will preside over 'Abbakka Utsava-Savi Samarambha' in evening.

N Yogish Bhat, deputy Speaker, will deliver the message of self-respect of Rani Abbakka. A 'chaturbasha kavighosti' featuring poets from Kannada, Tulu, Beary and Konkani languages will be held on February 12, which will be followed by seminar on 'DK district-facets of development' in the afternoon.Chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda will confer Rani Abbakka Awards on Lalitha Rai, writer, and Jayasheela, theatre artiste, at the valedictory. Mangalore MLA U T Khader, will preside, Rai said, adding the Samiti has urged the government.

Dubai, Feb 13: An Indian expatriate found to be infected with coronavirus in the UAE on February 10 is in a stable condition, the Indian Embassy told Gulf News.

“The Indian is a 36-year-old male,” an embassy official said, adding “he a resident of the UAE”.

However, the official did not say if the man had any travel history to China and also refused to divulge which state he hailed from.

On February 10, the Ministry of Health said the Indian national was found infected with coronavirus in the latest such case in the UAE. “The Indian national had interacted with a recently diagnosed person,” the ministry had said in a statement.

"All reported cases are in stable condition, except for one case, who is being put under close observation by a team of senior consultants at the Intensive Care Unit," added the statement.

The man is among the eight cases of coronavirus detected in the UAE so far. Others include six Chinese nationals and one from Philippines.

Earlier this week, the UAE announced that one of the infected patients, a 73-year-old Chinese national, Liu Yujia, had recovered.

Udupi, Aug 1: A girl child died five persons suffered injuries in a car accident today on National Highway-66 near Ambalpady in Udupi.

According to sources, two couples and children were travelling in the car from Mangaluru to Shikaripura when the tragedy took place. 

The speeding car rammed into the road divider and flipped over after the driver lost control over it near Ambalpady. 

Among the injured, the condition of a woman is said to be critical. She has been admitted to KMC Hospital in Manipal. The other passengers escaped with minor injuries.

A case has been registered at Udupi town traffic police station and investigations are on. More details are awaited.

Bengaluru, Jun 12: All the four candidates, including former prime minister H D Deve Gowda (JDS), and senior Congress leader Mallikarjna Kharge, on Friday were declared elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka.

Karnataka Assembly Secretary sources here said that all the four candidates, who were in the fray for as many berths, were elected after the last date of withdrawal of candidature ended on Friday.
