Nirav, Lalit, Narendra… Why do all thieves have Modi surname, asks Rahul

Chitradurga, Apr 14: Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday launched a blistering attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that he extended “undue favours to his industrialist friends,” who looted the country.

Addressing an election rally in Kolar on Saturday, Mr. Gandhi alleged that Mr. Modi had stolen money from the pockets of shopkeepers, farmers, traders and the poor and given it to the likes of Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, Mehul Choksi, Vijay Mallya, and others who fled the country.

Referring to the Rafale issue, he said: “100% chowkidar is a chor” and alleged that the Prime Minister had stolen Rs. 30,000 crore and gifted it to his “thief friend” Anil Ambani. He [Mr. Modi] is leading the team of chors (thieves), Mr. Gandhi alleged.

“I have a question. Why do all thieves have Modi as their surnames, be it Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi or Narendra Modi? We don’t know how many more such Modis will come out,” he said.

“When we announced NYAY (Nyuntam Aay Yojana), the face of the chowkidar [a reference to Mr. Modi] changed. He asked where will money come from to implement NYAY. I’m telling you Modiji, the money for NYAY will come from your friend Anil Ambani,” he said.

“There has been no action taken against business leaders Anil Ambani and Nirav Modi, who took crores as loan and did not pay back. But farmers are jailed when they cannot pay back their loans. Anil Ambani’s money will be distributed to the poorest of the nation,” he said.

The Congress chief promised that the party would deposit Rs. 3.6 lakh in the bank accounts of poor women in five years if the party comes to power.

Speaking in similar vein in Chitradurga, Mr. Gandhi said that Mr. Modi was the chowkidar of just a few capitalists in the country.

He alleged that in the last five years, the chowkidar’s government had waived over Rs. 3.5 lakh crore-worth loans of top businessmen, instead of taking action against big defaulters and helping poor farmers in distress.

Terming the present Lok Sabha election as an ideological fight, Mr. Gandhi said they had to choose between five years of “anyay” and next five years of NYAY. “The choice for the people is now between next five years of hatred, divisive nature and conspiracy of BJP or five years of love, development and brotherhood of the Congress,” he said.

Bengaluru, June 5: Under the leadership of trouble-shooter D K Shivakumar, the Karnataka Congress is planning a political ‘ghar wapsi’ to bring back leaders who quit the party and also rope in those from other parties.

Shivakumar, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president, has constituted a 12-member committee headed by former minister Allum Veerabhadrappa to liaise to anchor this effort to bring back people into the party fold.

The committee comprises of former legislators B A Hasanabba, Ajaykumar Sarnaik, Abhaychandra Jain, Satish Sail, Prafulla Madhukar, former MPs R Dhruvanarayan and BN Chandrappa, MLA V Muniyappa, former mayor Sampath Raj, Mahila Congress leader Kripa Alva and former KPCC general secretary V Y Ghorpade.

This move comes more than a year after over a dozen Congress MLAs defected and joined the BJP, leading to the collapse of the Congress-JD(S) coalition government. Also, several influential leaders quit the party ahead of the Lok Sabha elections last year.

The constitution of this committee also coincides with disgruntlement brewing within the ruling BJP.

“Many people who left the party and others have applied (to join Congress). Many have met me also. I felt it wouldn't be right for me to make a decision. So, this committee has been constituted,” Shivakumar said. “They will process all applications and send it to the KPCC.”

According to Shivakumar, any person wanting to join the Congress should accept the party’s leadership and its ideology. “Importantly, they should be first accepted by the cadre. If there's no acceptance from the cadre, then what's the point?” he said.

Kalaburagi, Jan 1: Fighting penury and partial blindness in one eye, a 39-year-old part-time Kannada lecturer from Kalaburagi district is set to become a commercial tax officer after cracking the Karnataka Administrative Services.

Ambadas Kamble, from Kotana Hipparaga village in Aland taluk, had to take a three-year gap during his school and college years - one-year break after completing Class VII and two years to clear subjects after he failed in II PU examinations. During those three years, he joined his brothers in masonry work to supplement the family's income.

Sweeping aside all hurdles with grit and determination, Ambadas studied Kannada literature for both undergraduate and postgraduate to land the post of a part-time lecturer in a Kalaburagi college. His father died when he was a child, and mother Chandamma supported her family of six - besides, Ambadas, she has two sons and two daughters - by working in houses in the neighbourhood.

Ambadas said he would like to dedicate his success to his mother, who died in the year 2012. "My mother encouraged me to chase my dream - financial difficulties notwithstanding - and allowed me to spend time in the library when my siblings were busy doing menial jobs to fund my education. I'm grateful to my brothers too," he said.

His two brothers are working as masons in Mumbai, having quit studies midway and deciding to support Ambadas - the first in the family to complete graduation. He did high school at Tadkal village in Aland taluk, and college in Kalaburagi.

The lecturer, who's 40% blind in the right eye, cracked the KAS examinations in his third attempt and stood 706th in the state. He has been selected for first-grade officer's post. Alongside, he's doing PhD in Kannada literature.

When his efforts finally paid off, Ambadas landed four job offers: Hostel warden at Morarji Desai hostel, at an SC/ST hostel, post of a lecturer and the tax officer's post. He picked the fourth to serve the state in right earnest.
