No action against illegal irrigation pump sets: D K Shivakumar

Bengaluru, Jun 14: Energy Minister D K Shivakumar on Tuesday admitted that the state government is not willing to take action against farmers who are illegally using irrigation pump (IP) sets, as the Assembly elections are fast nearing.shivkumr

“Let me admit that there are a large number of illegal pump sets. It has become a big ‘dhanda’ in the state. But, we cannot take action against them in this election year...I think the government should act during its first year in office,” he stated in a reply to Capt Ganesh Karnik (BJP) in the Legislative Council.

Farmers are illegally drawing water from rivers, ponds and lakes across the state using pump sets. In some cases, water is being pumped up to 20 km distance. The problem is so severe that the Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd sometimes finds it difficult to get water for its hydro power generating projects, he said.

Shivakumar said there are an estimated 4.81 lakh illegal IP sets. Of this 3.63 lakh have been regularised over the years.

The minister turned down the demand by Ramesh Babu (JD-S) that the government should not force the farmers to pay Rs 10,000 for the regularisation of the illegal IP sets and said that the farmers have to know the value of the power they are getting. “We have already yielded too much to the farmers.

As much as 39% of the power being generated in the state is supplied to the farmers free of cost. The government is spending Rs 9,000 crore per annum on power subsidy. The farmers should know the value of the power,” he added.

Hubballi, Jan 28: Charting that the Bharatiya Janata party’s Central leaders have not given a free-hand to the Chief minister B S Yediyurappa on the issue of expansion of Cabinet, former Chief minister and the Congress leader Siddaramaiah had opined that 'it has hampered the State’s development'.

Speaking to newsmen here on Tuesday, the Congress leader, alleged that 'by not giving permission to Yediyurappa to expand his ministry, it was evident that there is no any internal democracy in the Saffron Party'.

Mar 5: The government on Thursday asserted that there is no shortage of raw ingredients or medicines in the country as it has taken various initiatives to tackle the challenge posed by the coronavirus outbreak.

All initiatives are also being taken to ensure that there is no impact of the disease in India, Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers D V Sadananda Gowda said.

"There is no shortage of any APIs in the country. We have sufficient APIs (active pharmaceutical ingredients) and medicines in the country," he said.

Gowda was addressing the 5th international exhibition and conference on the pharmaceutical and medical industry organised by the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Gujarat government and industry chamber Ficci here.

For another three months there is no shortage for undertaking production in the pharma sector, he added.

"Our government has taken all initiatives to ensure that as far as our country is concerned the coronavirus should be stopped, and there is no hazard as far as this issue is concerned," Gowda reiterated.

Coronavirus is a challenge and "we should make all efforts that need to be taken..., " he added.

On Tuesday, India, the world's largest maker of generic drugs, restricted the export of common medicines such as paracetamol and 25 other pharmaceutical ingredients and drugs made from them, as it looks to prevent shortages amid concerns of the coronavirus outbreak turning into a pandemic.

Besides over-the-counter painkiller and fever reducer paracetamol, drugs restricted for exports included common antibiotics metronidazole, and those used to treat bacterial and other infections as well as Vitamin B1 and B12 ingredients.

A notification by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) had said the export of 26 active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and formulations would require licence.

Bengaluru, Jul 29: State officials will conduct Common Entrance Test (CET) exam as per the instructions given by the state high court, said Karnataka deputy chief minister CN Ashwathnarayan on Tuesday.

"Officials have informed that they are all set to conduct exams on July 30 and 31. We will put this matter in front of the high court. As per the instructions of the high court, we will move forward," said Ashwathnarayan.

This comes after Karnataka High court asked the state government to reconsider the decision of conducting the CET exam.

"...I had called an emergency meeting with district collectors, officials of education, transport, health, police department. And, I took information about the preparedness for conducting the CET exam," he added.

Karnataka CET Exam is a state-level entrance exam organised for providing admissions in Engineering, Pharmacy, B Pharma and other courses offered by colleges and institutions located in the state.
