No Ahinda push in Congress manifesto, says Moily

Bengaluru, Oct 25: With the ruling Congress looking to expand its vote base ahead of the 2018 Assembly polls, the party’s manifesto is likely to be more broad-based without reflecting Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s Ahinda focus.

Ahinda is a Kannada acronym for minorities, backward classes and dalits.

“Social justice pervades many sections of people cutting across caste and community,” Karnataka Pradesh Congress Manifesto Committee chairman and MP M Veerappa Moily told DH on Tuesday. “Nobody should feel let down. Everyone has to feel a sense of belonging to the Congress party and its ideology,” he said.

Siddaramaiah is widely considered an Ahinda leader. Since coming to power, the state government has launched several welfare schemes in line with its Ahinda focus.

The state government’s yet-to-be-published caste census report is likely to be discussed at the maiden meeting of the manifesto committee on October 29, Moily said.

Moily, a former Union minister, was convener of the committee that drafted the Congress manifesto for the 2009 Lok Sabha elections in which the UPA came back to power.

As part of the manifesto preparation process for the 2018 Assembly polls, Moily said several subject groups will be formed with focus areas. “One group will be tasked with reviewing the government’s performance. Sincerity is an important backdrop,” the former chief minister said.

The manifesto committee will tour the state and reach out to stakeholders so that discussions are not confined to party workers.

“We have to maintain an equal balance. Urban areas, too, have vulnerable sections,” he said. Party units in each district will be asked to send in suggestions “so that the manifesto will have a flavour of the ground,” he said.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Moily gave full marks to the Siddaramaiah-led government.

“It’s the best government in India right now,” he said. He went on to slam the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre for its “inexperience” and “misgovernance” of the economy, holding demonetisation and GST as examples.

Udupi, Jun 4: Karnataka Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakhar on Wednesday said that he will take up an issue before a high-powered committee on COVID-19 to find out the possibility of imposing lockdown on a particular house of the person infected with the virus instead of sealing down of entire areas.

Talking to reporters here on Tuesday after reviewing the district's prevailing COVID situation, the minister said the concept and modalities of declaring any area as containment zone has undergone changes in the last two months.

"Hitherto, we were declaring the entire area as the containment zone after detection of coronavirus positive cases. Subsequently, the area of the containment zone was decreased from the whole area to a particular street," the Minister said.

"Now, BJP MLA Raghupati Bhat has given a suggestion to seal down a particular house of the positive patient which would be taken up before the high-powered panel. The district administration concerned could supply all essential items to the particular family," he said.

He further said that the Union government has been providing all facilities to all the states to deal with the situation."

Bengaluru, Jul 22: On Wednesday morning starlet and Bigg Boss 3 contestant Jayashree Ramaiah sent social media into a tizzy with an update that read, “I quit. Goodbye to this f*****g world and depression.” Friends and acquaintances immediately began reaching out to the actor asking her to return their concerned calls and desist from taking any extreme steps.

“Jayashree has been battling depression for a while now. She had family issues and was also concerned about the lack of work,” shares actor Ashvithi Shetty. The Ramachari twins were in touch with Jayashree since they met at a celebrity cricket match four years ago. “She has shared several times about how low she’s been and I would try to cheer her up. But the problem was that she’d keep changing her phone number so often that it became difficult to keep track of how she was doing,” states Ashvithi.

Around four months ago, Jayashree moved into her own home and mentioned to her that she was happy with this new development in her life. “But she went retreated again and a few days ago, I messaged her on social media and she said she was doing fine. So I was shocked to see this update on Wednesday morning,” avers the actor. Repeated calls finally elicited a message from Jayashree that she was getting admitted to the hospital. “But I also got contradictory information that she had been discharged and had been taken to the hospital again but she was refusing to go inside. I am awaiting more clarity on the issue,” sums up Ashvithi.
