Karwar, Feb 22: Central Investigation Department (CID) has given clean chit to singer Premalatha and her husband Divakar in connection with alleged blackmail case filed by Sri Ramachandrapura Mutt and its Seer Raghaveshwara Bharathi Swami.

1seerlathaOn Wednesday, the CID team submitted ‘B’ report to the Honnavara JMFC court stating that there was no solid evidence to prove the allegations made against Premalatha and her husband by the seer.

Premalatha had earlier filed a complaint against the seer accusing him of sexually exploiting her for many times in the mutt.

In his complaint to Honnavar police in August, 2014, the seer had claimed that Premalatha and Divakar had demanded Rs 2 crore to "not to lodge rape complaint against him".

Following the complaint filed at Honnavar police station in 2014, after an enquiry by the police department, the state government had transferred the case to CID for further investigation.

Background

It could be recalled here that last year a local court had given clean chit to the same seer in the rape case filed against him by Premalatha.

Prior to that the CID charge sheet in the case (164/2014) registered with the Girinagar police station in Bengaluru, had established that the seer has sexually abused the singer repeatedly during the Rama Katha discourses across the country since 2011.

The vital evidence in the case claimed by the CID was the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report. The CID stated that the FSL report confirmed that the DNA sample found on the material evidence matched with the DNA of the seer. The charge sheet also stated that the seer repeatedly threatened the victim of incurring divine displeasure (if she did not comply). Hence, section 508 of IPC was also included.

The court had taken cognisance of the charge sheet and had summoned the accused. Before the stage of Hearing Before Charge (HBC), the seer had filed a discharge application. The CID objected stating that since the charges against the accused were serious, only a trial would unearth the facts. The court, however, discharged him of all the offences.

The victim had stated that after the Rama Katha programme at Gokarna in Uttara Kannada, in September 2011, the seer had made the first sexual advances at her.

Later, during the Rama Katha discourses held at Jodhpur in Rajasthan in October 2011, the seer had called her to his private room and given her some prasadam. The victim stated that the sexual abuse had taken place in Kolkata, Mumbai and in nine districts of Karnataka. The victim was a prominent singer in the Rama Katha programmes and the seer was also present during these programmes. The CID had conducted mahazar and recorded the statements of witnesses at all the places stated by the victim.

In July 2014, a woman by name Deepika, who participated in Rama Katha discourses, filed a complaint with the Honnavar police saying she got threatening calls asking her not to participate in the discourse.

In August 2014, Mutt staffer Raghavendra Madhyasta filed a complaint with the Puttur town police stating he got threat calls asking him not to support the seer.

In August 2014, one Chandrashekhar of Ramachandrapura Mutt filed a complaint with the Honnavar police against the victim in FIR number 164/2014 and her husband of blackmailing the seer for Rs 3 crore. The couple was arrested by Honnavar police and kept in judicial custody.

In August 2014, victim's daughter filed a complaint with the Girinagar (Bengaluru) police stating the seer had sexually abused her mother. The CID filed a charge sheet against the seer; the court (on Thursday) discharged the seer.

In August 2014, victim's brother-in-law Shyamprasad Shastry committed suicide by shooting himself at his residence in Puttur, Dakshina Kannada district. Shastry’s wife Sandhya Lakshmi filed a complaint stating that her husband was threatened by the mutt staff to ask the victim to withdraw the rape case against the seer.

Bengaluru, Feb 22: Student activist Amulya Leona, who was arrested on sedition charge after she raised ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ slogans during an anti-CAA event at Bengaluru’s Freedom Park on Thursday evening, has now criticised the organisers of the event for snatching away microphone from her hand.

The event was organised by ‘Hindu Muslim Sikh Isaai Federation’. Soon after she started pro-Pak slogans All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi rushed and tried to snatch mic from her hand. When she continued to speak, her microphone was deactivated.

According to police, the 19-year-old BA journalism student blamed her predicament on the organisers of the protest for not allowing her to complete what she wanted to say on stage.

"Maybe she had intended to say what she had recently posted on her Facebook page where she has said ‘Zindabad’ to all the countries, including India and Pakistan. But it went awry. She was not answering any of our questions, but kept saying she had not done anything wrong," a senior police officer was quoted as saying by a news paper.

The police have booked Leona for sedition and promoting enmity between groups. After her arrest, she was thoroughly questioned by the police for over two hours. After recording her statement, the police produced her before a magistrate in the wee hours of Friday. When she was taken to the judge’s residence, located at the National Games Village in Koramangala, Leona pointed towards the TV cameras and flashed a victory sign.

As the police did not seek her custody, the judge remanded her to judicial custody and she was subsequently taken to Bengaluru Central Prison at Parappana Agrahara. Her advocate is expected to file a bail application in the court on Monday.

When the police took her into custody at Freedom Park and quizzed her, she reportedly did not answer any of their questions but kept insisting that she had not done anything anti-national to be charged with sedition.

"It was the organisers’ mistake to snatch the mike from me before I completed what I had to say. Because of them, I have been arrested today. If they had given me a chance to complete what I had to say, nothing like this would have happened. Now, there is no point in telling you what I intended to speak there. But I can say that there was nothing anti-national in what I did. You can initiate action against me and my advocate will fight the case," a source, citing Leona, said.

The police recorded whatever she said as her voluntary statement and submitted it to the magistrate. "We tried to find out why she did what she did and whether there was anyone else behind her making such a statement. But it appears she had done it on her own," the police official said.

New Delhi, Feb 17: The Congress high command is likely to announce the party’s key troubleshooter in Karnataka, DK Shivakumar as the next state unit president with MB Patil as the working president, according to party leaders who spoke on condition of anonymity, in what could be a delicate balancing act between competing caste claims in the state..

Former CM S Siddaramaiah is likely to continue as the Congress Legislature Party leader, the leaders added.

The KPCC presidentship has been vacant ever since the incumbent Dinesh Gundu Rao resigned following the defeat in the bypolls, in which the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) won 12 of the 15 seats, ensuring a majority for itself in the state assembly.

The state leadership issue became contentious following that, with Shivakumar, a Vokkaliga, lobbying to ensure that his role as party’s main go-to man during difficult times be rewarded, the leaders cited above said. Patil, a former home minister and a Lingayat leader, was the favoured choice of Siddaramaiah, they added.

A former minister in the Siddaramiah cabinet told HT on condition of anonymity the appointment was now “just a formality”.

“How long could the current uncertainty continue? Shivakumar is a go-getter who can also help generate funds for the party. For instance, on the Bidar school sedition issue, we were late and started an agitation only after the accused got bail. With Shivakumar at the helm, we will be more aggressive and able to put the BJP government on a mat by highlighting all their omissions and commissions,” the former minister added.

The decision to appoint Shivakumar -- a seven-term MLA who served in the cabinets of former CMs S Bangarappa, SM Krishna, Siddaramiah and HD Kumaraswamy -- is likely to be a controversial one. He faces ongoing income tax and Enforcement Directorate (ED) probes, is currently on bail after being jailed by the ED in a money laundering case. He

In his 2018 poll affidavit, Shivakumar declared assets worth Rs 840 crore, making him one of the richest politicians in the state. His brother DK Suresh is a two term parliamentarian and is the sitting MP from the Bangalore Rural constituency.

Shivakumar’s latest move to build the world’s largest Christ statue in his constituency in Kanakapura has also come in for severe attack from Sangh Parivar outfits, who claim the land he donated was government-owned and illegally usurped by him.

Political analyst Manjunath said that Shivakumar, if appointed, is likely to inject a great degree of dynamism into the functioning of the party.

“He sees himself as a future Chief Minister and is very ambitious. If the appointments are confirmed, it will only vindicate the fact that the party high command has tried to balance caste interests by having a Vokkilga, a Lingayat and a Kuruba – the three leading castes in the state - heading different parts of the party. Also since the BJP is making a concerted effort to break into the Vokkaliga votebank, nominating Shivakumar would be a smart move to consolidate the community behind the party,” he said.
