No impact of Karnataka bandh in Dakshina Kannada

Mangalore, October 6: Despite the support by various local organisations to the ongoing agitation against the release of Cauvery waters to Tamil Nadu, the Karnataka bandh did not evoke any response in the coastal district on Saturday.

 

The dawn-to-dusk 'Karnataka bandh' called by Kannada outfits has disrupted normal life in many parts of the state except the twin districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi.

 

The normal life in this part of the state has once again proved that people of coast has no emotional connections with the Cauvery issue.

 

However, many organisations, including All College Students' Union, have lent a moral support to the cause by organising symbolic rasta roko and human chain protests.

 

All commercial establishments, schools, colleges, petrol bunks, malls and theatres remained open on Saturday.

 

Canara Bus Operators Association president Rajavarma Ballal said there was no move to stop bus services.

 

The DK Cinema Exhibitors Association has opposed the bandh. "We will lend the protest a moral support. We will close theatres only if there is a law and order problem, lest the show will go on,'' said Shankar Pai, secretary of the association.

 

DK and Udupi Petroleum Dealers Association president Aithappa Alva said there was no question of closing the bunks.

 

DK Hotel association president Kudpi Jagadeesh Shenoy said they were not ready to shut down restaurants.

 

Cauvery Horata Samithi president SP Chengappa also clarified that they would not impose bandh in this part.

 

Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) advisor Annayya Kulal said it was true that the people of the region don't have an emotional connect with Cauvery. "When the issue of Nethravathi river diversion comes up, we will need the support from the rest of the state. So all KRV members are going to Bangalore to take part in the protest," he added.

 

Deputy commissioner NS Channappa Gowda said no organization in the district had approached the district administration seeking permission to hold a bandh and there would not be any holiday for schools or colleges in the district.

 

"We will take a call depending on the situation. Only KRV has given a memorandum saying that they protest releasing of water to Tamil Nadu," DC said.

 

The Karnataka government began releasing 9000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu after the Supreme Court asked it to abide by the September 19 directive of the Cauvery River Authority, headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, till October 15.

Udupi, Jan 17: Six fishermen were rescued by members of another fishing boat after their boat capsized off Gangolli coast in the District recently.

Police on Friday said that the fishing boat, belonging to Jayalakshmi of Kodi Kanyana, had set sail from Malpe towards Gangolli on the night of January 12. On Wednesday (Jan 15) the vessel’s hull got damaged and water began gushing in.

Bengaluru, May 10: Former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Sunday accused the state government of not preparing proper guidelines to bring back people who are stranded near the Karnataka-Maharashtra border areas.

"No proper guidelines have been given to officials to bring back people who are stranded near the Karnataka-Maharashtra border. From the last 45 days, many of these people have not got any relief nor are there any proper directions or guidelines from the state government," alleged Kumaraswamy.

He also accused the state government of cheating the people of Karnataka.

"Karnataka government is cheating people the same way it cheated with the flood compensation. The state government had announced lakhs of rupees as compensation to those who lost houses in the flood last year. But nobody has got the records or details as to how many people got benefited from it," he added.
Fifty-three more COVID-19 cases were reported in Karnataka on Sunday, the state government said.

The total number of cases in the state is at 847, including 405 discharged and 31 deaths so far, the bulletin said.

Bengaluru, Apr 14: Bracing for post-lockdown hard times, the Karnataka government on Monday decided to auction about 12,000 BDA sites and regularise unauthorised constructions across the state in a bid to shore up its already-thin finances.

"Some 12,000 corner sites (developed by Bangalore Development Authority, or BDA) are lying idle in Bengaluru. We hope to net about Rs 15,000 crore from the auction of the sites," chief minister BS Yediyurappa said after chairing a meeting with senior ministers and officials to discuss ways to raise funds.

"The Covid-19 pandemic has thrown Karnataka into a deep financial crisis. There's a need for such measures," the chief minister said in defence of the decisions.

The sites – mainly of 40x60ft and 50x80ft dimensions – are in nine layouts. Also, the state government will auction corner and vacant sites in layouts formed by development authorities in other major cities of Karnataka.

Industry experts said that in a tepid market, it wasn’t easy to find buyers for the sites, each of which costs about Rs 1 crore. The CM said, “Since it’s an open auction, I’m confident of a good price since corner sites are always in demand. If we don’t get the expected price, then we will stop the process.”

The meeting decided to fast-track disposal of the cases related to regularisation of unauthorised constructions pending before courts. “If courts decide these cases, then thousands of people will be relieved, besides helping the government in mobilising resources to take up development works,” the CM said.

The government hopes to get about Rs 4,000 crore from the layout-regularisation move.
The government decided to amend the law to allow hundreds of private and cooperative housing societies to allot residential plots.
