Bengaluru, Feb 8: Yielding to the pressure from various mutt heads and opposition parties, the Congress government of Karnataka on Thursday abruptly withdrew its public notice seeking people’s opinion over whether the state should take complete or partial control of the religious mutts, temples and other institutions in Karnataka.

At the legislative council, chief minister Siddaramaiah gave a clarification to the public notice issued by his government seeking opinion on the state interference in religious institutions.

"We had issued the public notice in good faith, based on the division bench order of 2000 which directed the government to either set up a religious commission or any other body it deems fit to oversee the affairs of religious mutts, temples, trusts and other institutions. However, seeing the opposition from the public, we have decided to withdraw the same. The government does not, and will never, intend to take control of religious institutions in the state," he said.

Siddaramaiah said since it is a HC directive, the government will consult the law department and then take a call as to what best can be done to either evade or implement the directives of the court, without offending the community leaders.

The withdrawal of the public notice comes in close proximity to the previous decision and admitted "error" by the state government of issuing a circular to all district superintendent of police (SP) seeking their opinion on revoking cases against the minority community accused. This too was withdrawn after the principal opposition BJP raised a ruckus and termed the Siddaramaiah regime as anti-Hindu government.

The public notice, which was issued earlier this week in vernacular newspapers, came as adding fuel to the fire against the Siddaramaiah government which faced the wrath of the religious pontiffs outside and that of the opposition parties of BJP and JD(S) inside the legislature.

Having moved the adjournment motion, BJP opposition leader at the legislative council K S Eshwarappa termed the decision of the Siddaramaiah government as being an "offensive" to the religious institutional heads in the state and that the anti-Hindu government wanted to take complete control of the majority religion institutions.

"The Siddaramaiah government wants to take control of the majoritarian community institutions, while at the same time appease the minorities with the withdrawal of cases against them. This is nothing more than a Hindu virodhi government," he said.

No sooner was this statement made,  Siddaramaiah personally took upon the mantel of defending the government despite the presence of the Muzrai minister Rudrappa Manappa Lamani in the house.

Siddaramaiah said even the previous government of JD(S)-BJP coalition had issued the same public notice, word-to-word, seeking opinion from the people on taking control of the religious institutions.

The CM showed the public notice issued by the Justice Rama Jois committee which was formed by the JD(S)-BJP coalition government to study the HC order and give its report on the same issue. "There is no difference between the recent notification and the one issued in 2007 by the Rama Jois committee. Now, are you telling me that the BJP is also anti-Hindu? There is nothing anti-Hindu about this public notice and neither is the government inclined to take control of the mutts or temples in the state. The mutt seers have nothing to fear over this," he said.

Siddaramaiah went on to reiterate that he too was a Hindu and had the utmost respect for the Hindu religious mutts, temples and institutions. However, unwilling to yield to this response and demanding an apology from the CM towards the Mutts, the combined opposition of the BJP and JD(S) staged a walk out of the legislative council.

Bengaluru, Jan 6: The city police commissioner Bhaskar Rao has ordered a special inquiry by the additional commissioner in connection with sexual harassment on a girl hailing from Kasaragod and the allegation that there were attempts to convert her to another religion.

Udupi-Chikmagalur MP Shobha Karandlaje on Sunday met Rao along with the girl and gave a complaint that two youths from Kasargod had raped her and forced her to convert to their religion.

A complaint has been filed in the Kasargod police station, but no action has been taken against them. Since both the accused work in Electronics City police station jurisdiction, she urged the police to arrest them.

Rao said he was yet to gather information about the case and he had directed the additional commissioner to conduct a preliminary investigation and submit a report.

After filing a complaint, Shobha told reporters that she has been sexually harassed ever since she was a minor.

The MP said that the girl, who was brought from Kasaragod to Electronics City, where the accused youths run a business, was allegedly raped. “I have asked the Police Commissioner to direct the Electronics City police to register an FIR and arrest the youths,” she said.

“I have spoken to the survivor and she said that the youths were also forcing her to convert to Islam and threatened her with dire consequences if she did not,” the MP alleged.

Shobha went on to claim that there was a gang that could be operating to forcibly convert Hindu women to Islam. She also met Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa along with the girl’s family members and gave a petition.

Mumbai, May 19: Even as banks in United Arab Emirates are trying to trace NMC founder BR Shetty, a prominent bank in India is seeking to recover loans worth Rs19.13 billion from him and his companies.

A local court has also barred him and his wife from selling or transferring some properties while it hears the case.

In the court filing, the Bank of Baroda said Shetty had an obligation to handover the title deeds of the 16 properties and mortgage the assets with the bank.

The 16 properties in several Indian cities including Bengaluru were among guarantees put up by Shetty and his wife against the Rs19.13 billion ($253 million) loans, according to a May 16 court order seen by Reuters. The court in Bengalaru set the next hearing in the case for June 8.

NMC, the largest private healthcare provider in the UAE, was placed under administration in April after months of turmoil. It disclosed in March it had debts of $6.6 billion, well above earlier estimates of $2.1 billion.

Finablr, in which Shetty has a controlling stake, said in April it may have nearly $1 billion more in debt than previously reported.

Bengaluru, May 26: After Yogi Adityanath said that no state can take manpower from Uttar Pradesh without his government's permission, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president DK Shivakumar on Tuesday termed the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister's move as "unconstitutional" and "against the right to freedom of movement."

"Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's move to restrict hiring people of Uttar Pradesh is unconstitutional and goes against the right to freedom of movement. Mr Yogi, please note that UP is not the private property of your govt. The people of Uttar Pradesh don't need your government's permission to work anywhere in India," Shivakumar tweeted.

"Mr Yogi doesn't understand the basic rules of governance in a democracy. Such actions lack common sense and will only make the people of Uttar Pradesh suffer more. When it's convenient for BJP, it's One Nation, when it's not, it's different states and different people. Heights of hypocrisy," he added.

Adityanath had on Monday said that the state government will provide social security and insurance to labourers and no state can take manpower from Uttar Pradesh without his government's permission.

"If any state wants manpower, they cannot take our people from the state without our permission as there were reports of misbehaviour with them in other states. We are taking full responsibility for labourers' social security. We will provide every kind of security to them including insurance. Wherever they will go, we will always stand by them," Yogi said.

The Chief Minister said that skill mapping is being done in Uttar Pradesh and a commission will be set up for labourers to ensure employment for them.

On Sunday, Adityanath had ordered the formation of a 'Migration Commission' for the purpose of providing the workers, who have returned to the state during the lockdown phase, with employment suited to their skills.
