No sewerage cess if old apartments instal STPs

Bengaluru, Jun 9: Bengaluru Development Minister K J George on Thursday said the government will waive sewerage cess on old residential apartment complexes in the city if they set up their own sewerage treatment plants. george

Replying to JD(S) member R Chowda Reddy in the Legislative Council, he said STPs are mandatory for all new apartments. Those constructed after February 25 last year, have been given time till December this year to set up STPs. Sewerage cess will be waived for those constructed before February 25 last year, if they set up STPs, he added.

The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board is currently levying 30% of the monthly water bill amount as sewerage cess on apartments that do not have STPs.

Chowda Reddy complained that the BBMP officials and BWSSB were needlessly harassing people living in apartments to set up STPs.

George assured that he would take strict action against such officials. Responding to a query on revival of Bellandur and Varthur lakes by P R Ramesh of Congress, the minister said tenders have been finalised for taking up various works for the revival of the two lakes.

The revival plan is in accordance with the recommendations of an expert committee. Two STPs are being set up to ensure only treated water is let into the lakes, George added.

Visas of Indians stranded in Gulf extended, won't return home anytime soon: Indian govt

Kochi, Apr 18: The Centre on Friday informed the Kerala High Court that there was no immediate plan to bring back the Indian citizens stranded in the Gulf countries due to the novel coronavirus outbreak and that the expatriates had been granted visa extension.

The counsel for the central government made the submission before a division bench comprising justices Rajavijayaraghavan and T R Ravi during the hearing of a plea seeking a direction to bring back Indians stranded in the UAE.

Permission of the Gulf countries was required to send medical teams there to carry out medical examination of the stranded Indians, the counsel said when the court sought to know the Centre's view on Kerala government sending medical teams to the Gulf countries to deal with the issue of COVID-19 disease among Malayalees there.

The court posted the plea for April 21 for consideration after the Central government informed that a similar petition is under consideration of the Supreme Court.

In its plea, Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre (KMCC) in Dubai, the organisation for non-resident Indians from Kerala, sought directions to the Ministries of External Affairs and Civil Aviation to provide exemptions in the international air travel ban to bring back Indians stranded in the UAE.

The petitioners noted that those who return could be kept in quarantine as per the protocol of the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Karnataka govt to build Rs 200 crore pilgrim complexes at Tirumala

Tirupati, Jul 5: The Karnataka government will soon build a massive pilgrim amenities complex and marriage hall at Tirumala, the hill abode of Lord Venkateswara, at an estimated cost of Rs 200 crore, a temple official said here on Saturday.

The state would soon submit a blueprint for the construction of the Rs 200 crore mega complexes to the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) that governs the hill shrine, the official said.

Consequently, based on the designs, TTD would construct the complexes with the given fund and after completion, they would be handed over to the Karnataka government, he said.

Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa would lay the foundation stone for the mammoth complexes on the hills some time next month, he said.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy is likely to take part in the programme, he added.

29 students fall sick after consuming milk in school

Mysuru, Feb 26: Twenty-nine students of the Government Primary School fell sick after consuming milk supplied at the school on Wednesday morning at Kiranguru village, in Hanagodu hobli, in the hunsur taluk in the district.

Police said the students were immediately rushed to the primary health centre in Hanagodu and provided first aid.

Tahsildar and Police personnel visited the health centre and inquired about the health of the students. "All the students are responding to the treatment," sources said.
