No subsidy, Karnataka government plans to pay housing loan interest

Bengaluru, Nov 27: The state government plans to revisit existing affordable housing schemes that offer subsidies on home loans and replace them with interest-free home loans.

This is part of the government’s mission to promote PM Modi’s ‘housing for all’ scheme. The government plans to build 19 lakh houses in 30 months.

If everything goes to plan, the government will do away with existing housing subsidies and pay the interest on principal of up to Rs 12 lakh in urban areas and Rs 6 lakh in rural areas.

As per the draft, beneficiaries must repay only the principal to banks. The state will bear the interest for a period of 15 years (maximum loan tenure). The government will pay interest of 6.5% a year on the Rs 12 lakh loan (urban areas) and 8% a year on the Rs 6 lakh loan (rural areas).

Loans for houses under three models

Any principal or interest above the limit will have to be borne by the beneficiary. The houses will have carpet area ranging between 330sqft and 450sqft. Karnataka Housing Board, urban local bodies, Nirmithi Kendras and Karnataka Road Infrastructure Development Corporation and empaneled units will be the implementing agencies.

The loans will be offered under three models. First, loans will be provided by combining Rs 6 lakh from the central government and Rs 6 lakh from the state under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in urban areas and Rs 6 lakh in rural areas.

The second is the public-private partnership model. Under this, the government and private agency will share sites on developed land and the beneficiaries will buy the developed house or construct their own through an association formed by them.

If the beneficiary opts to purchase a developed home which is more than the upper limit of the loan, then she has to pay remaining amount.

In the third model, a private agency will develop the land and hand over a 50% share of the land to the government, which will distribute it to the beneficiaries. The state has sought to increase the financial eligibility of beneficiaries for housing scheme to Rs 3 lakh from the present Rs 87,600 in urban areas and Rs 32,000 in rural areas.

Mangaluru, Aug 7: Following the incessant rain for last few days and subsequent landslides reported at various places along Charmadi Ghat, the movement of vehicles been banned for two days. 

Charmadi Ghat road connects Dakshina Kannada and Chikkamagaluru districts on National Highway-73. The fresh landslides caused cracks on the road and uprooted many trees. 
Officials have closed Charmadi as well as Kottigehara check posts as a precautionary measure.

Belthangady tahsildar Mahesh J confirmed that multiple landslides have hit Charmadi Ghat road.

"The road has been closed for vehicular movement as the officials are at the spot to clear landslide debris. As a precautionary measure, vehicular movement has been banned as there are chances of further landslides," he said.

Hundreds of commuters who were stuck on various stretches of the ghat following a landslide between Maleyamaruta and Alekan falls in Chikkamagaluru district have been rescued.

Bengaluru, Mar 23: Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi cautioned private bus transport services operators, taxis and autorickshaws from exploiting commuters in wake of bus and train services being suspended by the government as precautionary measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

In a statement released here on Monday, Transport Minister Savadi said it has come to the notice that private buses, taxis and autorickshaws were misusing the opportunity and exploiting commuters. Inter-district bus services have been suspended in the districts wherein lockdown has been announced to protect the health of people and none should violate the decision of the government, he stated.

Transport and Police Department officials have been asked to taken action against those violating norms and exploiting commuters. Service providers for their profit cannot risk with the health of the people and repeated cases if come to the fore, they will not be spared, Savadi cautioned.

Government has taken measures to prevent spread of COVID-19. Private transport service providers and people should join hands and cooperate to contain it, he appealed.

Mangaluru, July 30: The Social Democratic Party of India has condemned the move by the state government to drop a lesson on legendary Mysuru rulers Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan from the class 7 textbook.

The Department of Public Instruction has omitted the chapter from the textbooks of Class 7 in their attempt to reduce syllabus for state board schools by 30 per cent.

The department, however, has decided to retain similar chapters on Tipu Sultan in 6th and 10th Classes, though the syllabus in text books for all classes from 1 to 10th has been trimmed. 

In a media release statement, SDPI State President Ilyas Mohammed Thumbe termed the move as communally motivated. “By dropping the lesson, the BJP-led government is engaged in saffronisation of education,” he alleged.

He said that Tipu was the most prominent freedom fighter, who had given priority to irrigation, rocket technology and harmony. The BJP government is also planning to scrap lessons on the Constitution, secularism and democracy. By twisting history, the BJP is trying to mislead the younger generation, he added.
