Bengaluru, May 21: Hours after Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) sent a show cause notice to Congress MLA Roshan Baig for speaking against Congress-JDS alliance leaders, Baig said he does not bother to read the notice as it was issued at "the orders of the people whose incompetencies were highlighted by me."

"I've received the show cause notice sent to me by the KPCC. I'm not even going to bother to read it because it's clearly sent at the orders of the same people whose incompetencies were highlighted by me," Baig wrote on his Twitter handle.

Earlier in the day, KPCC general secretary Venkatrao Y Ghorpade sent a show cause notice to Baig over his remarks against AICC general secretary KC Venugopal, KPCC president Dinesh Gundu Rao and Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Siddaramaiah.

He has been asked to reply within one week.

Baig, who is at loggerheads with the party leaders for not getting the ticket to contest the just-concluded Lok Sabha polls, slammed Gundurao and Siddaramaiah, saying that "these two leaders should be held responsible if the Congress doesn't perform well in the General Elections."

He also called his party leader KC Venugopal a "buffoon" and blamed Siddaramaiah for the "collapse" of the alliance in the state.

The Congress leader reiterated that he is upset with the fact that no seats were given to Christians and only one seat to Muslims in Karnataka.

"No seats were given to Christians and only one seat was given to Muslims in Karnataka. They were ignored. I am upset about this. We have been used," he told ANI.

"The arrogance of these state leaders is immeasurable. These people accuse the opposition of horse-trading without mentioning how they sold ministerial portfolios at exorbitant prices. The incumbent government is being man-handled by the state Cong leaders as well," he said.

"I brought out several instances of murky ongoings with a few leaders of the high command of the party, but those leaders turned a blind eye to these ongoings. Be assured several grievances were raised by me internally before going public," Baig said.

The miffed Congress MLA further stated that there are several senior leaders who are capable of running the party but were sidelined.

"Leadership defines a party and I've hit out at the leaders. Unfortunately, attacks on the leadership turn into an attack on the party. There are several senior leaders who were capable of running the party but were sidelined," he said.

Responding to Baig's statement, Gundurao said: "It is unbecoming of a politician of his stature to be speaking like this. It ranks of pure political opportunism. We will take the required action when the time is right."

Meanwhile, Congress leader Rizwan Arshad called Baig an "opportunist" and asked him to resign from the party.

"He is an opportunist. If he has guts, let him resign and contest on the BJP ticket. If the Congress is such a bad party which gave him power for the last 10 years and made him MLA for the last four terms, then let him resign and contest on the BJP ticket. Let us see what happens in Shivajinagara," he said.

Mangaluru, Aug 8: As visuals of the Air India Express flight crash at Kozhikode international airport emerge, one cannot help but be reminded of an eerily similar and unfortunate accident that occurred a decade ago. The August 7, 2020 tragedy brought back memories of the 2010 crash.

It was on May 22, 2010 that an Air India Express Boeing 737-800 flight from Dubai to Mangaluru over shot the runway while landing at Bajpe airport and fell into a cliff. Of the 160 passengers and 6 crew members on board, 158 were killed (all crew members and 152 passengers) and only 8 survived.

Even back then, the plane had split into two. The crash has been termed as one of India's worst aviation disasters.

The final conversations between Air traffic control (ATC) and the pilot prior to the landing showed no indication of any distress.

Like the Mangaluru accident, Karipur crash too happened when the flight was attempting to land.

The captain of the aircraft which crashed at Mangaluru, Z Glucia, was an experienced pilot with 10,000 hours of flying experience and had 19 landings at the Mangalore airport. Co-pilot S S Ahluwalia, with 3,000 hours of flying experience had as many as 66 landings at this airport. Both the pilot and co-pilot were among the victims.

An investigation into the accident later found that the cause of the accident was the captain’s failure to discontinue an ‘unstabilised approach’ and his persistence to continue with the landing, despite three calls from the First Officer to ‘go-around’.

Bengaluru, Apr 1: The price of petrol and diesel will go up by Rs 1.60 and Rs 1.59 per litre, respectively, from Wednesday. This is in line with Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa’s decision to hike the rate of tax on petrol from 32% to 35% and diesel from 21% to 24%.

He had announced this in his March 5 Budget for 2020-21 fiscal. At present, a litre of petrol costs Rs 71.97 and diesel Rs 64.41 in Bengaluru.

The government decided to roll out the hike from Tuesday midnight going into Wednesday, April 1, after briefly considering a postponement in view of the COVID-19 crisis.

Finance Secretary (Budget & Resources) Ekroop Caur confirmed to DH that the hike will be rolled out.

The 3% hike on fuel tax was a key resource mobilisation measure that Yediyurappa announced in his Budget. The hike is expected to fetch the government Rs 1,500 crore.

Yediyurappa had also announced a 6% additional excise duty on Indian Made Liquor (IML), which could help the government mop up Rs 1,200 crore. However, the sale of liquor has been prohibited during the lockdown period. Plus, hiking fuel prices during the lockdown will not hit citizens very hard.

Mangaluru, Feb 26: The 'Yakshagana' stage in Karnataka is witnessing a curious spectacle with a Muslim woman artiste creating waves with her performances.

Arshiya, the artiste from Vittal in Dakshina Kannada district, is the first woman from the Muslim community to venture into the popular traditional theatre art form.

At one time, women were barred from Yakshagana stages.

A Muslim woman exponent on stage has attracted the attention of 'Yakshagana' lovers in the state.

Arshiya is now getting advanced training in her skills at the Kadali Kala Kendra under Ramesh Bhat here.

Arshiya, who is fond of 'Bannada Vesha' (villain roles), is now known in her stage name 'Tanu Vitla.'

She has already performed various episodes on stage and gained popularity.

Arshiya, currently working in an automobile showroom at Padil, said she was attracted to the art form from a very young age.

The initial enchantment with the art form came as she saw the role of Mahishasura in 'Sri Devi Mahatme Yakshagana Prasanga' (episode) performed near her home town.

She was attracted to all the elements of the art form, which combines music, percussion, dance, dialogues, stage techniques, make-up and costume.

Arshiya said she was also inspired by a teacher in her school at Vittal who trained her for a performance on stage during the school's annual day celebration.

She started performing on local stages at Vittal at the very young age of 10.

Arshiya now performs prominent roles on stage including Mahishasura in Sri Devi Mahatme Prasanga, the role which enamoured her in her childhood.

She also has donned the roles of Nishambhasura, Rakthabeejasura, Srinivas Kalyana, Sudarshanopakyana, Kadamba Kaushike and Shambavi Vijaya.

Her performances at Udupi and Karwar besides Mangaluru have earned her a lot of admirers, who love her 'Asura' roles, thanks to her loud voice.

Arshiya now wants to learn the 'Chende' (percussion instrument), which is an important element in Yakshagana performances.

Arshiya revealed that there was a bit of resistance from her community about her passion for the art form, but she had staunch backing of her family.
