Newsroom, Nov 2: In a shocking revelation, Pallavi Gogoi, the chief business editor of the US-based National Public Radio, has claimed that she was raped by journalist-turned-politician M J Akbar in 1994, when she was 23 years old and working for The Asian Age.

M J Akbar has dismissed the allegations as false, his lawyer told The Washington Post, which has published the first person account of Pallavi Gogoi, who is now a citizen of United States of America.

In an extensive piece on The Washington Post, Pallavi Gogoi said that she found out about the accusations against M J Akbar, prompting her to call her friends. She goes on to describe how, as a 22-year-old journalist in The Asian Age, where Akbar spared no opportunity to show just how superior he was to the new employees.

Gogoi says that she became the editor of the op-ed page a year after joining the Age, but "would soon pay a very big price for doing a job I loved". She said that when she went to show Akbar the page she had made that day, he applauded her and then lunged to kiss her.

Not stopping there, Akbar called her to the Taj hotel just months later and tried to repeat the kiss, but she fought him off at the cost of getting scratched.

Gogoi said that since then, she would come to work before others so she could finish her pages and leave to report by 11, but even that did not help her, for after an incident in Bombay, she found herself in Delhi, covering the murder of an inter-caste couple. Not long after, Akbar said to her to discuss her story with him in Jaipur, where he overpowered and raped her.

After the rape, Gogoi says Akbar became emboldened to defile her repeatedly and would shout at her if she spoke to her male colleagues in the company.

Gogoi said that she confided in Tushita Patel, one of Akbar's accusers, and left the Asian Age and went to New York, where she found work as a reporting assistant and eventually, a United States citizenship.

Islamabad, Jun 23: Seven more Pakistan cricketers, including Muhammad Hafeez and Wahab Riaz, selected for the tour of England have tested positive for COVID-19, taking the total to 10, the PCB revealed on Tuesday.

The seven who tested positive on Tuesday are Kashif Bhatti, Muhammad Hasnain, Fakhar Zaman, Muhammad Rizwan, Imran Khan, Hafeez and Riaz. Shadab Khan, Haider Ali and Haris Rauf had returned positive tests on Monday.

“It is not a great situation to be in and what it shows is these are 10 fit and young athletes...if it can happen to players it can happen to anyone,” Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) CEO, Wasim Khan told a media conference.

He said a support staff member, masseur Malang Ali, had also tested positive for COVID-19.

Khan said that the players and officials would now assemble in Lahore and another round of tests would be carried out on June 25 and a revised squad would be announced the next day.

The squad has to leave on June 28 for the series scheduled to be held next month, he said.

“It is a matter of concern but we shouldn’t panic at this time as we have time on our hands,” Khan said.

He said the players and officials would be retested on reaching England.

Bengaluru, Feb 23: Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers DV Sadananda Gowda on Sunday said that several "anti-national organisations" were misusing the platform of anti-CAA protests.

"We have taken serious note of it and have started an investigation. Several anti-national organisations are misusing the platform of anti-CAA protests and many people are trying to take political advantage of this situation," he told the media on Sunday.

Gowda said that the government is "very serious" about the issue. "We are already working towards this. Both the state and Centre are together investigating into this," he said and added, "We will ensure that we cut this and will not allow this to grow. We will investigate the organisers of the event as well."

"If you are inviting such people (alleged anti-national elements), it means that you either know about it or that you are indirectly encouraging such things. In such situations, the organisers too will be acted upon," he stressed.
