Managluru, Nov 8: Minister for Food and Civil Supplies U T Khader has termed the last year’s demonetisation as “the biggest scam and the largest government-abetted money laundering scheme”.

Speaking at the Black Day observed by the Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee to mark the first anniversary of demonetisation on Wednesday in the city, the minister urged the Prime Minister Narendra Modi led-government to release a White Paper on the prevailing economic condition of the country and measures taken to improve the economic condition.

"The Central government should also release a list of people who died while waiting near ATMs or in banks for exchanging the scrapped Rs 1000 and Rs 500 notes. The government should pay compensation and also help in providing free education to the children of the deceased. The Centre should also announce how much black money has been confiscated in the last four years," said the minister.

DK DCC president Harish Kumar termed demonetisation as an "organised loot and plunder." "It has helped to convert black money into white. The Central government has spent Rs 12,000 crore of tax payers' money for reprinting the currency after demonetisation. The industrial production was hit and labourers have lost their job after demonetisation," said the president.

"Disruptions caused by demonetisation has affected the manufacturing activities. India's GDP grew at 5.7% between April to June this year - the slowest pace recorded in 13 quarters or since the NDA government assumed office in May 2014. The BJP that promised of bringing back black money stashed in Swiss banks and crediting Rs 15 lakh to the accounts of citizens has failed in fulfilling its promise. The Centre has imposed highest GST up to 28 % on several goods, which has affected the common man and poor in the way of rise in price," he said.

"The hard-earned tax payers money is being misused in the name of cleaning Ganga river as well. In spite of spending Rs 20,000 crore, the Ganga river water is not clean. The Centre has even failed to waive the loans borrowed by the farmers at a time when Karnataka was reeling under drought," he alleged. Harish Kumar said that the Congress wants to free hunger from the country.

Bengaluru, Mar 21: Appealing for support to the Prime Minister's call for observing 'Janata Curfew' on Sunday to contain the outbreak of COVID-19, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has asked people not to come on roads immediately after the end of curfew time as it can nullify the measure.

Noting that people have extended both moral and societal support to this unique curfew, he said "Now, my appeal to people on behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modiji is, don't come on roads and out of your dwellings immediately after nine in the night when curfew time ends. Remain settled in your houses and bungalows avoiding all public appearances on roads and other public places."

"Your coming out in open can nullify the 14-hour measure to contain the spread of virus. As a co-operation to authorities and the society, please remain indoors and stay with your near and dear ones," he said in a release.

Calling for "resolve and restraint" to fight the virus, the Prime Minister during his address to the nation on Thursday had asked the entire country to observe 'Janata curfew' on Sunday.

Calling for a 'Janata curfew' on March 22 from 7 am-9 pm, Modi had said no citizen, barring those in essential services, should get out of their house, and asserted that it will be a litmus test to show how much India is ready to take on the challenge of the coronavirus pandemic.

Stating the Karnataka government has so far been dealing successfully in containing the Covid-19 virus, Yediyurappa said this has happened because of people's co- operation.

He also asked people not to forget to involve in a bout of applause as a mark of appreciation to people involved in containing the spread of the virus and treating those affected by it.

Three new COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Karnataka on Saturday, taking the total number of infections to 18 in the state.
