Note ban will end up making UP polls more costly: Survey

Lucknow, Dec 26: Demonetisation has forced candidates to find "innovative ways to pump in black money" for campaigning which will end up making the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls more costly, a survey has claimed.note

The survey conducted jointly by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and UP Election Watch to study impact of demonetisation on poll expenses said, "Demonetisation will have no impact in the campaigning or the poll expense."

In the survey, 69 per cent of the prospective candidates and party office-bearers admitted that compared to previous polls, the cost of contesting elections would rise by at least 10 per cent due to demonetisation.

Around 65 per cent of the perspective candidates said there would be no impact on the "mode and methods of luring voters" in the coming Assembly polls while 70 per cent said they would follow the old patterns to woo voters.

Traders dealing in poll materials; event managers, printers and travel agents said there would be problem in the campaigning and 70 per cent of them admitted their trade has been affected.

On cashless system, 60 per cent of the traders admitted it would have no adverse effect on their business.

While releasing the report of the survey, chief convener of ADR and UP Election Watch, Sanjay Singh said post demonetisation, a survey on its possible impact in the forthcoming assembly elections of UP was conducted in various areas and Assembly segments of the state.

The survey was conducted in 30 Assembly constituencies spread over 10 divisions of Uttar Pradesh -- Jhansi, Banda, Kanpur, Lucknow, Meerut, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Allahabad, Agra and Bareilly.

Mangaluru, May 30: Coastal district of Dakshina Kannada today recorded third covid-19 death as a 67-year-old woman from Bantwal taluk succumbed to the coronavirus at the district Wenlock Hospital, the designated Covid hospital.

The victim is said to be a neighbor of two women (daughter-in-law and mother-in-law) who died of the coronavirus a few days ago. 

On April 18 due to difficulties in breathing, she was rushed to Wenlock Hospital, where she was tested positive for coronavirus. Initially she responded to treatment. However, her condition started worsening earlier this week and breathed her last today evening.

Her daughter also has been tested positive for the deadly virus and she is currently undergoing treatment.

Mangaluru, Jan 9: Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner has lodged a complaint with the Police alleging that his signature was forged in a holiday circular for schools and colleges in the district during National General Strike called by Trade Unions.

It may be recalled that the district administration had declared a holiday for all educational institutions on December 20 and 21 in the backdrop of the December 19 violence.

A few miscreants had forged this order and circulated it on social media stating that a holiday had been declared for schools and colleges in the district on January 8.

Mangaluru, Jul 4: The General Secretary of the Dakshina Kannada district unit of Bharatiya Janata Party’s youth wing (Yuva Morcha) has been tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday.

In a tweet, Sooraj Jain Marnad, has confirmed that he was tested positive for COVID-19.

"I have been tested COVID19 positive. With all your blessings, I’m recovering & will be under treatment for a few days," the tweet said.

The district has witnessed a huge spike in COVID-19 cases in the past few days. The total tally of the district has already crossed 1000 mark. 22 COVID-19 positive patients in the district have died so far.
