Chennai, Oct 24: Acclaimed Malayalam film director I.V. Sasi, who was instrumental in the success stories of superstars Mammootty, Mohanlal and Jayan, died here on Tuesday, according to family sources. He was 67.

In a career spanning close to four decades in which he also helmed some Tamil and Hindi projects, Sasi directed nearly 150 films. He was ailing for sometime.

He is survived by his wife, the popular yesteryear actress Seema, a son and a daughter.

His last rites will be conducted once his daughter, who is based in Australia, reaches here, according to sources in the know of developments.

Sasi, who was inactive in the film world for a while, was planning to get back to his passion. He had announced a blockbuster film with technology geek Sohan Roy to make a film on Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990.

The news of Sasi's demise drew emotional tributes from the film fraternity.

Innocent, a member of the Lok Sabha and the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA), said Sasi's departure was an irreparable loss to the Malayalam film industry.

"When I started my career, Sasi was a director and he went on to reach heights which not many can reach. He proved through his films that a director stands above actors," Innocent said.

Hugely popular writer-director Ranjith said he heard the news at his hotel room in Kozhikode. It was in this room that Sasi always stayed when he directed his films in this city.

"I scripted for him a while back and even when we met recently, he again asked me for a script. The only thing in his blood was films and films. Malayalam film industry has lost one of its legends," he said.

Actor-director Joy Mathew said Sasi was a creator and made memorable movies when technology that's available now was never there.

"Sitting on his chair, he would easily complete a shot in which hundreds of people were acting in. In his days, he never had the luxury of seeing the shot on a TV monitor, but he could visualise the scene and the shot with precision and that was his greatness."

Actor Dulquer Salmaan said Sasi "created an era of his own in Malayalam cinema". Actor-producer Nivin Pauly said Sasi was an "icon who created cinema that stood the test of time" and "bridged the gap between commerce and art in Malayalam cinema".

Although Sasi hailed from Kozhikode in Kerala, he was based in Chennai.

The love Kozhikode and the industry had for Sasi was seen in a huge public reception held there in 2013 when almost everyone who acted in his films turned up. Leading from the front then were Kamal Haasan, Mammootty and Mohanlal.

Kamal was Sasi's friend for 45 long years.

"The industry and I mourn a great technician. My support and love to my sister Seema Sasi and family," he tweeted.

Sasi's glorious career as a director began after the stupendous success of "Avalude Raavukal" (Her Nights) in 1978. It told the tale of a prostitute, a role essayed by Seema who later became the director's wife.

In the two decades starting in the 1980s, Mammootty and Mohanlal established themselves in the category of superstars. Of the nearly 150 films that Sasi directed, Mammootty starred in more than three dozen of them.

Mohanlal's hit movie Devasuram, scripted by Ranjith, was directed by Sasi. The two superstars also acted together in a dozen of Sasi's films.

Sasi's biggest hit Angadi, released in 1980, starred Jayan. They worked in six films.

Sasi's magic last worked in 2003 when Balram Vs Tharadas met with reasonable success. After that, he did just one film. Since then, he was cooling his heels in Chennai, while his wife Seema found more visibility on TV screens than on the silver screen.

Jun 8: The Shiv Sena has sought to take a different stand on Bollywood actor Sonu Sood’s help in ferrying migrants back home in the midst of the nationwide lockdown induced by the coronavirus pandemic. On Sunday evening, the actor met Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray at his residence ‘Matoshree’. The CM’s son and Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray and MLA Aslam Shaikh were also present during the meeting.

Sonu Sood’s visit to the Shiv Sena supremo’s residence came after Sanjay Raut, one of the most vocal leaders of the party, criticised the actor and sought to draw a BJP link to his help to migrants in order to show the ruling dispensation in poor light.

“Sood is an actor whose profession is to deliver dialogues scripted by someone else and make a living out of it. There are many people like Sood who would promote any political party if paid well,” Raut wrote in Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamna.

Referring to the actor’s help to migrants, Raut wondered if the sudden generosity of “Mahatma” Sood in Mumbai was at BJP’s behest and said that he would “soon meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and become the celebrity manager of Mumbai.”

As Raut’s remarks fuelled a controversy in political circles, Aaditya Thackeray tweeted in praise of Sood in an apparent attempt to distance the party and its leadership from the leader’s remarks.

“This evening Sonu Sood met up with Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray ji along with Minister Aslam Shaikh ji and me. Better Together, Stronger Together to assist as many people through as many people. Good to have met a good soul to work for the people together.”

“The CM was glad to meet Sonu Sood and discussed the work everyone is doing for the people during covid relief. Misunderstandings don’t exist but what does is a commitment to help people,” Aaditya tweeted.

Sonu Sood too sought to downplay Raut’s remarks and expressed gratitude to all political parties for having supported him. “They (Shiv Sena) are also supporting it and it’s not about any particular party. We have to support all the people who are suffering. Every party from Kashmir to Kanya Kumari has supported me,” the actor told reporters after his meeting with the Chief Minister.

Sonu Sood has earned immense praise for providing help to stranded migrant workers during the Covid-19 lockdown. He has launched a helpline for migrants and has helped hundreds of migrants return to their native places in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Karnataka.

"Tu bhul gaya woh time jab tu mere ghar pe aake… ‘bhai bhai meri album kar do. Bhai 'Deewana' kar do. Bhai, Smita Thackeray se milwa do, Bal Thackeray se milwa do. Abu Salem se bacha lo. Abu Salem galiyaan de raha hai'... yaad hai na? Yaad hai ki nahi yeh sab cheezein? Main tujhe keh raha hoon mere muh mat lagna ab tu bas. (Do you remember the time when you used to come to my home requesting me… ‘brother record an album for me. Brother, record Deewana for me. Brother, introduce me to Smita Thackeray and Bal Thackeray. Save me from Abu Salem. Abu Salem is abusing me'… do you remember? Don't mess with me, I am warning you)."

"Marina Cover yaad hai na? Woh kyon boli, woh kyon back out kiya yeh mujhe nahi pata. Media ko pata hai mafia kis tarah function karta hai. Uska video mere paas padha hai. Ab agar tune mere se panga liya, toh woh video main apni YouTube channel mein dal dunga. Samjha? Mere mooh mat lagna (Do you remember Marina Cover? I don't know no why they spoke and why they backed out, but media knows how the mafia functions. I still have that video with me. Now if you mess with me, I will upload that video on my YouTube channel. So don't mess with me)."

In a recent video posted on Instagram, Sonu Nigam had appealed to music companies (without taking names) to be a little kind towards newcomer artistes, saying otherwise more people will commit suicide. He had mentioned in his previous video that currently two companies rule the music industry. He had also claimed falling prey to power play by a Bollywood actor.
