Nothing wrong in states having its own flag: Shashi Tharoor

Bengaluru, Jul 24: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Sunday said there is nothing wrong in a state having its own flag and argued that the regional identity of a state would never come in the way of the nation's integration.ShashiTharoor

Tharoor, however, said his observations on the flag issue that has kicked up a row in Karnataka politics, were personal and his party hadn't yet taken an official stand on the matter. "I see no problem in a state having its own flag as long as the rules are complied with. Having a state flag is not anti-national as some people are trying to project it," he told reporters on the sidelines of the conference organized by the state government at Gandhi Krishi Vignana Kendra (GKVK) campus, University of Agricultural Sciences.

Tharoor, who took part in a keynote discussion, affirmed both at the session and later at a press conference that the idea of India is one that celebrates pluralism and that divisive ideology has no place in society that's known for its diversity. Referring to the growing resentment against imposition of Hindi on non-Hindi states, he said the Centre is trying to impose an idea that Hindi is the language of the majority , but it's a wrong notion.

"A Hindi-speaking person in Uttar Pradesh can cherish an idea that he represents the majority, but in reality he doesn't. In India, there are 23 scheduled languages and 22,000 dialects. India is a country where the linguistic minorities are the majority," he said, adding that even Hindu religion doesn't represent the majority because of the caste system.

"As far as Hindi is concerned, Bollywood has brought that language to our TV sets and its relevance ends at that.When it comes to official communication, governments must deal with people in their own languages. If they adopt Hindi, then they can speak to a Sharma but can never speak to a Subramanyam or a Siddaramaiah," he added, indicating there are no takers for Hindi in southern states.While stating that the Centre should never impose Hindi on non-Hindi speaking states, Tharoor averred that English, as a common language, is use ful to a certain extent, but Hindi can never become the common language of India.

Responding to a query about the BJP government's motto of `one-nation-one-culture' in the context of the flag controversy , he said: "India is already a `one-nation-two-flag' country, with Jammu and Kashmir having its own flag.Every state should be allowed to design its own flag and there should be no objection to that, provided the state flag is subordinate to the national flag."

Mysuru, Jan 19: The 'City of Palaces', for the first time in history, got a Muslim woman as its first citizen, on Saturday.

Tasneem, a JD(S) Corporator, is elected as the 22nd Mayor of Mysuru. The 34-year-old Tasneem is a second-time corporator, representing Ward number, 26. She defeated BJP candidate Geetha Yogananda, representing Ward no 65 of Srirampura, by a margin of 24 votes. Out of 70 members, who were present during the election, 47 voted for Tasneem, 23 for Geetha Yogananda.

Tasneem thanking the party leaders said the JD(S) gave her an opportunity to serve the city and its people. JD(S) gives more priority for minorities. The party facilitated the first Muslim Mayor, Arif Hussian, in 1996. Later, Congress corporator Ayub Khan served as mayor in 2008.

Women from different communities had served as mayor of the city, but, Tasneem is the first Muslim woman to be elected as Mayor of Mysuru.

Tasneem, a BA Graduate from Maharani's College, was proud for being the first citizen and thanked party supremo H D Deve Gowda, leaders H D Kumaraswamy, MLAs Sa Ra Mahesh, G T Devegowda, K S Rangappa, and her colleagues in the Mysuru City Corporation. Tasneem extended her gratitude to her voters, who voted her for the second time.  

'Mysuru is known for cleanliness. Thus, my first priority is to maintain cleanliness and I will work towards retaining the 'Clean city' tag. The city is facing issues related to street lights among others for many days. I will make prompt attempts to resolve them,' she said.

JD(S) city president K T Cheluvegowda said the party nominated Tasneem for mayor's post as per the suggestion from the party supremo H D Deve Gowda and other leaders. There were other aspirants, but, they were convinced and nominated Tasneem, he said.

Mangaluru, Jun 19: A repatriation flight from Doha brought 178 passengers to Mangaluru today. This is the first flight operated from Qatar to Mangaluru under the Vande Bharat Mission. 

The Air India Express flight, which took off from Hamad International Airport in Doha at 12 noon (Qatar time) landed at Mangaluru International Airport around 6.30 pm IST.

Indian embassy had prepared the list of passengers to be flown in the flight. Stranded people who were in need of emergency repatriation such as pregnant women, senior citizens and those in need of emergency medical treatment were given priority while finalising the list of passengers. 

Kannadiga organisations in Qatar such as Karnataka Sangha, Tulu Kuta Qatar, Karnataka Muslim Welfare Association, Mangalore Cricket Club, Bunts Qatar, Mangalore Cultural Association, South Canara Muslim Welfare Association, Qatar Billawas had been striving for the repatriation of stranded Kannadigas by exerting pressure on the elected representatives to operate flights. 

Kannadigas in Qatar have thanked former Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Jayaprakash Hegde for persuading the authorities concerned to facilitate the repatriation.

The second in the series of chartered flights arranged by Thumbay Group, UAE and the Bearys Cultural Forum (BCF) Trust, Mangalore to repatriate stranded Kannadigas in the UAE took off from Ras Al Khaimah International Airport on 25th July 2020. The flight was fully occupied with 178 passengers including the sick and elderly as well as those in need of urgent medical attention due to chronic illnesses, pregnant ladies and kids. Passengers also included those facing visa issues and job losses.

Implemented under the leadership of Dr. Thumbay Moideen - Founder President of Thumbay Group & Founder Patron of BCF and Dr. B K Yusuf - President of BCF, these repatriation flights are organized on a purely charitable basis, with all necessary steps and precautions in place to ensure the safety and comfort of passengers. 

Thumbay Group assigned its fleet of buses to transport the passengers free of charge from their residences in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman to the airport. The organizers also provided free meals and refreshments to the passengers, in addition to PPE kits and face-shields distributed free of charges. 

Dr. B K Yusuf – BCF President, Dr. Kaup Mohammed - BCF General Secretary, other office bearers of BCF, as well as Thumbay Group’s representatives Mr. Farhad C – Director of the 
Hospitality Division of Thumbay Group and Engr. Farwaz P. C. – COO of the Construction Division were present at the airport to see off the second group of passengers. 

ARISTOCRAT Travels supported the ticketing, boarding and related processes for the passengers. Support 
was also extended by social organizations including Bhatkal Jamath, Bhatkal association, BCCI, BWF, DKSC, KNRI, Kannadiga Help Line, KDKGS-UAE, Dubai Konkans, KSS and Dubai 
Kannadigas.

The passengers were received at Mangalore airport under the leadership of Mr. Mumtaz Ali - patron of BCF and other distinguished personalities of Mangalore including Mr. B. M. Farookh - Hon. MLC, Mr. Moidin Bava - former MLA, Mr. U. T. Ifthikhar, Mr. S. M. R. Rashid - President of 
BCCI central committee etc.The passengers were transferred to the hotels where they had registered for the mandatory quarantine.

The first flight in the series, with 186 passengers had taken off on 21st July 2020. The next flight under this joint initiative is scheduled to take-off from Ras Al Khaimah airport to Mangalore on 10th August 2020. A few more similar repatriation flights are to soon follow, in the coming weeks.
