Now, no birth certificate needed for passport

December 24, 2016

New Delhi, Dec 24: The Ministry of External Affairs has done away with the mandatory requirement of the birth certificate as proof of date of birth (DOB) when applying for a passport.

passportAll passport applicants can submit any one of the documents — transfer/school-leaving/matriculation certificate, PAN card, Aadhaar card/E-Aadhaar with the DOB, a copy of the extract of the service record of the person, driving licence, Election Photo Identity Card (EPIC) issued by the Election Commission or LIC policy bond.

Hitherto, as per the statutory provisions of the Passport Rules, 1980, all applicants born on or after January 26, 1989, had to mandatorily submit the birth certificate as proof of the DOB to get a passport. It has also done away with the rules that required divorcees and separated women to give the spouse's name.

Henceforth, the online passport application requires the person to provide the name of father, mother or legal guardian, i.e, only one parent and not both. This would enable single parents to apply for passports for their children, and to also issue passports where the name of either the father or mother is not required to be printed at the request of the applicant.

The government has also accepted the demand by sadhus and sanyasis that they should be allowed to write the names of their gurus instead of parents. But they have to provide at least one public document such as EPIC, PAN card or Aadhaar card, wherein the name of the guru has been recorded against the column(s) for parent(s) name(s).

Orphaned children, who do not have any proof of DOB like a birth certificate or matriculation certificate or the declaratory court order, may now submit a declaration given by the head of the orphanage or child care home.

Bengaluru, Jan 12: Janata Dal (Secular) chief and former prime minister H D Deve Gowda on Sunday refuted reports of him contesting in the Rajya Sabha elections and added that he is more concerned about strengthening his party in Karnataka.

"I am not interested in going to Rajya Sabha. My concern is to build and strengthen the party in the region to the best of my ability. I had declared earlier that I will not contest elections anymore," Deve Gowda told ANI here.

"My party MP D Kupendra Reddy is there in the Rajya Sabha as of now and further decisions will be taken by the party. In March 2019, towards the end of the 16th Lok Sabha I had declared that I will not contest any more elections," Deve Gowda added.

Four Rajya Sabha seats in Karnataka are about to fall vacant in June this year as two of Congress, one of BJP and JD(S) MPs retire.

Bengaluru, Jul 19: Three legislators of the opposition Congress in Karnataka, including 2 MLAs and 1 MLC tested positive for coronavirus and are under treatment, a party official said on Saturday.

"Our Bailhongal MLA Mahantesh Koujalgi in Belagavi district and Humnabad MLA Rajashekhar Patil and his MLC brother Chandrashekhar Patil in Bidar district tested positive for the infection and are under treatment at designated hospitals," party spokesman Ravi Gowda told media persons in Bangaluru.

Koujalgi's swab sample was taken on Friday after he showed signs of illness and its result turned positive earlier in the day.

"As Koujalgi attended a review meeting at Bailhongal, about 20 officials who participated in the meeting have been home quarantined," said Gowda.

Koujalgi is the second lawmaker in the state's northwest region to test positive after BJP's Belagavi North assembly segment MLA Anik Benake tested positive for the virus on July 15.

"Patil brothers were in self quarantine after meeting BJP's Bidar Lok Sabha member Bhagwanth Khuba, who tested positive on Wednesday. Their tests also showed they were infected with the virus," Gowda said.

Congress MLC Sandesh Nagaraj, who tested positive on Friday, is under treatment at a private hospital in Mysuru.

Dakshina Kannada district Youth Congress president Mithun Rai is in institutional quarantine in Bengaluru after he tested positive for the infection.
