Kejriwal_resignedNew Delhi, Feb 15: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation, with all the sound and fury, would have been surprising if it did not happen. When, in December 2013, the Aam Aadmi Party formed a government in Delhi, it had a single objective in mind — to pass the Jan Lokpal Bill failing which to bow out of office as a martyr punished for taking on the corrupt. The script has played out almost perfectly.

Mr. Kejriwal was bound by his own past to make the passage of the Bill non-negotiable. Indeed, the anti-corruption law defines the AAP, it is the reason why the party was able to make the impossible transition from a political greenhorn to a party in power.

The Jan Lokpal Bill was the centrepiece of the 2011-2012 Anna Hazare movement. To those who thronged the fast venues of Anna, the specific clauses in the legislation — which many experts saw as draconian with the Lokpal himself potentially turning into a Frankenstein’s monster — were of no concern. As Mr. Kejriwal said in a 2011 interview: “See, people did not understand the details of the JLB. They simply saw it as a dawai [medicine] for corruption.”

The larger symbolism of the Jan Lokpal Bill is why Mr. Kejriwal took on the might of the Centre and Delhi’s Lieutenant-Governor on the constitutional validity of its introduction and passage in the Assembly. There was always going to be two views on this given that the Congress was in the saddle at the Centre, and a different version of the Lokpal Bill had recently been passed by Parliament. The Congress could obviously not support the AAP government’s Jan Lokpal Bill and the Lokpal Bill passed by Parliament for which credit was given to Rahul Gandhi.

In the event, the Jan Lokpal Bill got blocked right at the stage of introduction with the Union Home Ministry insisting upon prior permission from the Lt. Governor. Mr. Kejriwal contested this furiously: He quoted experts who made the opposite case, he petitioned the Lt. Governor and argued that if the Delhi government was not going to be allowed to pass even a Bill, it made no sense for it to exist. With the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party teaming up to vote against the Bill’s introduction, the State government’s fate was sealed.

Whichever way the Bill went, Mr. Kejriwal was certain to have claimed it as his victory. Indeed, when initially it seemed as if the Delhi government had managed to introduce the Bill, there were jubilant shouts of “victory” from the crowds of AAP volunteers gathered outside the Assembly.

Mr. Kejriwal’s exit line predictably skewered the Congress and the BJP. “The two corrupt parties have got together to defeat me because they were scared I was going after Mukesh Ambani. They could not afford for me to expose the nexus.”

High on drama

The AAP government’s short life was high on drama; in less than two months it courted more controversy than governments would in a year. Mr. Kejriwal and his Ministers probably overdid the histrionics. And yet, few would dispute that on corruption, the AAP went where none dared to go. The FIR against Mr. Ambani — and the deafening silence of the other parties l’affaire K-G Basin — says as much.

Part II of the script will see the AAP take the message to the country as a whole — and set itself as the gold standard for probity and honesty.

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 27: BJP's Kerala state President K Surendran on Monday said it is 'highly irresponsible' of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to not attend PM's video conference with all chief ministers on prevailing COVID-19 situation earlier today.

"The Kerala Chief Minister not attending the important conference regarding a pandemic in the country is not good for the state," Surendran said.

The BJP state President believes Vijayan has sent a wrong message by not attending the conference.

"It is the irresponsible behavior of the Chief Minister. Prime Minister Narendra Modi says that team India is fighting this pandemic together. By not attending the meeting, the Kerala CM has sent a wrong message, " he added.

Surendran said that the meeting was of high priority as PM was meeting the state CM's regarding the important decision of lockdown in the country.

"From the last meeting, many things have changed. Other chief ministers who did not get a chance to speak, participated in the meeting. But Kerala CM chose not to attend the meeting and BJP condemns it, " he said.

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan had not participated in the PM's video conference held earlier today and instead Kerala Chief Secretary Tom Jose represented the state in the meet.

According to sources, Kerala has given its suggestions in writing.

This was the fourth such interaction of the Prime Minister with the Chief Ministers, the earlier ones had been held on March 20, April 2, and April 11.

PM Modi in the meeting said the lockdown has yielded positive results as the country has managed to save thousands of lives in the past one and a half months.

New Delhi, May 17: Following the COVID-19-induced economic disruptions, up to 135 million jobs could be lost and 120 million people might be pushed back into poverty in India, all of which will have a hit on consumer income, spending and savings, says a report.

According to a new report by international management consulting firm Arthur D Little, the worst of COVID-19's impact will be felt by India's most vulnerable in terms of job loss, poverty increase and reduced per-capita income, which in turn will result in a steep decline in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

"Given the continued rise of COVID-19 cases, we believe that a W-shaped recovery is the most likely scenario for India. This implies a GDP contraction of 10.8 per cent in FY 2020-21 and GDP growth of 0.8 per cent in FY 2021-22," the report said.

India's COVID-19 tally has crossed 90,000 and the nationwide death toll has touched nearly 2,800 so far.

The report titled "India: Surmounting the economic challenges posed by COVID-19: A 10-point programme to revive and power India's post-COVID economy" said the 'collateral damage' of the forecasted GDP slowdown, will be felt most acutely in employment, poverty alleviation, per-capita income and overall nominal GDP.

"Unemployment may rise to 35 per cent from 7.6 per cent resulting in 136 million jobs lost and a total of 174 million unemployed. Poverty alleviation will receive a set-back, significantly changing the fortunes of many, putting 120 million people into poverty and 40 million into abject poverty," the report said.

"India is headed towards a W-shaped economic recovery with a potential GDP contraction of 10.8 per cent in FY21. An opportunity loss of USD 1 trillion is staring India in its face," said Barnik Chitran Maitra, lead author of the report and Managing Partner & CEO of Arthur D Little, India and South Asia.

Maitra further said "for its USD 5 trillion vision, a radical economic approach is needed, centred on an immediate stimulus and structural reforms. The Prime Minister's visionary 'Atma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan' is a good start to this new approach."

The report lauded the steps taken by the government and the Reserve Bank of India, but said a far more assertive approach may be required given the magnitude of the adverse economic output.

The report suggested a 10-point programme to accelerate the recovery which include strengthening the 'safety net' significantly for the most vulnerable, enable survival of small and medium businesses, restarting the rural economy and providing targeted assistance to at-risk sectors.

It further said the government should launch "Make in India 2.0" to capture global opportunities, build 'Modern India', accelerate Digital India and Innovation, strengthen global investment corridors with the US, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Japan and the UK, debottleneck land and labour and transform banking and financial markets in a bid to secure a sustainable economic future for 1.3 billion Indians.

New Delhi, Feb 4: Senior BJP leader and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday accused Delhi's ruling Aam Aadmi Party of not implementing the central government's schemes in the national capital.

Addressing an election rally in Moti Bagh, he also sought to allay fears over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), assuring the gathering that the legislation will not take away anyone's citizenship.

Singh alleged that the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government did not do anything in the last five years.

The AAP had promised to add 5,000 buses to the fleet of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), but instead the number has come down by 1,000, he claimed.

The Union minister said the AAP dispensation did not implement central schemes in Delhi fearing that the popularity of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government will grow among Delhiites.

Pension schemes and the Centre's flagship health insurance scheme, Ayushman Bharat Yojana, are some of those that the Kejriwal government did not allow to be implemented in Delhi.

On the anti-CAA protests, Singh said that the opposition parties have been spreading "lies" about amended citizenship law and the National Population Register (NPR).

"The CAA will not take away anyone's citizenship. The opposition parties are spreading lies about the CAA. There should be no such politics over this. Some people are trying to write the history of the country with the ink of hatred," he said.

The culture of India is such that it considers the entire world one family, he said.

Delhi goes to polls on February 8. The results will be declared on February 11.
