Now, saffron activists to install statue of anti-Muslim riot accused

Plans are afoot to install a statue of Sumit Kumar, a saffron activist, who was killed during the pre-planned anti-Muslim riots in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr, following false rumours of cow slaughter in December last year.

Police inspector Subodh Kumar Singh-who was trying to prevent the communal riot-was also shot dead by the Hindutva activists. All the accused in the case are now out on the bail, while Subodh Singh's wife has raised concerns over the safety of her family.

Though Sumit's name figured in the initial FIR, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for his family. His name was later removed.

While a few police officials who were on the spot confirmed that Sumit was a part of the mob that attacked the cops, the saffron activists insisted that he had been shot dead by the police.

A member of the right-wing group that started the violence said that they were planning to install a statue of Sumit in the Mahaw village on December 3, his first death anniversary.

"Modalities in this regard have to be worked out and we feel that Sumit, 20, deserved to be lauded for his sacrifice," said a member on condition of anonymity.

Three of the seven accused -- Shikhar Agarwal, Hemu and Raghav - were released on bail in August this year. The three were felicitated with garlands when they were released from jail. None of the officials were willing to comment on the issue.

Bengaluru, Jul 11: Karantaka Congress chief DK Shivakumar on Friday raised questions over claims that Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Power Project Madhya Pradesh was "largest in Asia" and said a 2000 MW had been built in the state.

"BJP central government is claiming today that it inaugurated Asia's largest solar plant of 750 MW at Rewa, MP. What then is the 2000 MW Solar Plant in Pavagada, Karnataka which was built in just 3 years by Karnataka Congress government and has been operational since 2018?" Shivakumar said in a tweet.

The Congress leader further said that the most unique thing about the solar project set up in Karnataka was that the farmers were being paid yearly rents for the land upon which it was constructed as it had been leased and not purchased from them, helping them retain ownership.

"The unique thing about the 2000 MW Pavagada Mega Solar Park was that not a single acre of land was acquired from the farmers. All 13,000 acres have been leased from the farmers who are being given yearly rent. Karnataka model of renewable energy was accepted as the best in India," he said.

"Union power minister must answer as to how the Central Government can claim that the Rewa Solar Park (750 MW) opened today is Asia's largest when clearly the Pavagada Park in Karnataka is much larger (2000 MW) and was opened two years back!" he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Power Project to the nation on Friday.

Bengaluru, Jun 27: A Karnataka government employee on SSLC exam duty at a school in Pavagada, Tumakuru district, on Friday tested positive for Covid-19, prompting the education department to send all staff members of the exam centre on quarantine.

“No student has been affected. All the staff has been replaced,” said R Umashankar, principal secretary, education department.

Mangaluru, July 30: The Social Democratic Party of India has condemned the move by the state government to drop a lesson on legendary Mysuru rulers Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan from the class 7 textbook.

The Department of Public Instruction has omitted the chapter from the textbooks of Class 7 in their attempt to reduce syllabus for state board schools by 30 per cent.

The department, however, has decided to retain similar chapters on Tipu Sultan in 6th and 10th Classes, though the syllabus in text books for all classes from 1 to 10th has been trimmed. 

In a media release statement, SDPI State President Ilyas Mohammed Thumbe termed the move as communally motivated. “By dropping the lesson, the BJP-led government is engaged in saffronisation of education,” he alleged.

He said that Tipu was the most prominent freedom fighter, who had given priority to irrigation, rocket technology and harmony. The BJP government is also planning to scrap lessons on the Constitution, secularism and democracy. By twisting history, the BJP is trying to mislead the younger generation, he added.
