Mangaluru, Apr 29: A non-resident Indian, who had evaded several court warrants in connection with a domestic violence case, has been arrested at Mangaluru International Airport on his arrival from United Arab Emirates.

wifeThe sleuths of the Bureau of Immigration caught Ismaeel Asif, a resident of Kanyana, Mandiyooru in Bantwal taluk, soon after he landed at the Airport on Wednesday, and handed him over to Vittla police.

A case of domestic violence had been registered at Vittla police station against 24-year-old Asif in March 2014, following a complaint filed by his wife accusing him of physically and mentally torturing her.

Even though police had managed to arrest him after registering the case, he had managed to secure bail and flew abroad. However, he had failed to appear for hearing of the case despite the issue of warrants by a local court four times.

In February this year, Dakshina Kannada superintendent of police Dr Sharanappa had issued a lookout circular against Asif. Hence, Bureau of Immigration had kept an eye on him. Unaware of this development, Asif landed at Mangaluru Airport on Wednesday, and got arrested.

After taking him to custody, Vittla police produced Asif before the senior civil judge of JMFC court, who remanded him to judicial custody. It is said that he was working in a private firm in Dubai.

Shivamogga, Jun 30: The organic farmers' market in Shivamogga in Karnataka has seen a rise in the demand for organic fruits and vegetables in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Residents of nearby areas frequently visit the market to get fresh produce.

According to Sridhar, a farmer who sells his produce in the market, the demand for organic fruits and vegetables was very low before the coronavirus outbreak.

"I have been involved in organic farming for the last two decades but there was no real market. Since these days everyone is trying to boost their immunity, we are getting a lot of positive response from the locals," he told news agency.

Sridhar and other farmers come from villages near the city. They are authentic organic farmers under the Vikas Trust and Savayava Krishi Parivar, a federation of organic farmer's families based in Karnataka, and they promote pesticide and fertiliser free agriculture.

Gurumel Singh, who often comes to the local market said, "My family has started eating more organic fruits and vegetable now because of the pandemic. We have been told it is important to take care of our health and organic fruits and vegetables are good immunity boosters. The fruits I buy from the organic market are also much sweeter than the ones I get elsewhere."

Bengaluru, Jul 11: Karantaka Congress chief DK Shivakumar on Friday raised questions over claims that Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Power Project Madhya Pradesh was "largest in Asia" and said a 2000 MW had been built in the state.

"BJP central government is claiming today that it inaugurated Asia's largest solar plant of 750 MW at Rewa, MP. What then is the 2000 MW Solar Plant in Pavagada, Karnataka which was built in just 3 years by Karnataka Congress government and has been operational since 2018?" Shivakumar said in a tweet.

The Congress leader further said that the most unique thing about the solar project set up in Karnataka was that the farmers were being paid yearly rents for the land upon which it was constructed as it had been leased and not purchased from them, helping them retain ownership.

"The unique thing about the 2000 MW Pavagada Mega Solar Park was that not a single acre of land was acquired from the farmers. All 13,000 acres have been leased from the farmers who are being given yearly rent. Karnataka model of renewable energy was accepted as the best in India," he said.

"Union power minister must answer as to how the Central Government can claim that the Rewa Solar Park (750 MW) opened today is Asia's largest when clearly the Pavagada Park in Karnataka is much larger (2000 MW) and was opened two years back!" he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Power Project to the nation on Friday.
