NRI cricketer Ashfaque dies during practice match in Oman

Muscat, Nov 12: A cricket player, hailing from from western Indian city of Mumbai, died of heart attack during a practice game at Al Amerat in Oman on Saturday.

According to a statement issued by Oman Cricket, Mohammed Ashfaque Shaikh (39) was bowling his slow medium pacers and collapsed when he was preparing to bowl his next ball.

“His teammates saw him fall down when he went back to his bowling run up. He was quickly taken to the car but as he was being shifted he lost his balance and collapsed again with his arms flailing by his side. He was rushed to the Royal Hospital where the doctors tried hard to revive him. Thirty minutes later they pronounced him dead,” Sameer, his brother in law, said.

Oman Cricket expressed its deep grief over Ashfaque’s death and offered condolences to his family.

“It’s a very sad news. We can feel the pain of his family and offer our heartfelt condolences. May God rest his soul in eternal peace and grant courage to the bereaved family to bear this loss with fortitude,” Oman Cricket Secretary Madhu Jesrani said.

Ashfaque was working with Uday Khimji Group and previously had been a member of their cricket team. However, this season he was playing for Global United Business team in the H Division League. His wife and two sons, 13 and 10, are currently in Muscat.

New Delhi, May 28: With 6,566 more coronavirus cases and 194 deaths reported in the past 24 hours, India's COVID-19 tally reached 1,58,333 on Thursday, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Affairs.

The number of active coronavirus cases stands at 86,110, while 67,692 people have recovered and one patient has migrated, it said. The death toll due to the infection has reached 4,531 in the country.

Maharashtra is the worst affected state with 56,948 cases. Tamil Nadu has recorded as many as 18,545 cases while Gujarat and Delhi have recorded 15,195 and 15,257 coronavirus cases respectively.

Jun 5: The Asian Football Confederation has awarded the hosting rights of the 2022 Women's Asian Cup to India for the first time since 1979.

The decision was taken at the AFC Women's Football Committee meeting. In February, the AFC Women's Football Committee had recommended India to be hosts.

In a letter to the All India Football Federation, Dato Windsor John, General Secretary, AFC wrote: "The Committee awarded the hosting rights of the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2022 Finals to the All India Football Federation."

The tournament will likely be held in the second half of the year. In the 1979 edition, India had finished as runners-up.

"I need to thank the Asian Football Confederation for finding us suitable to host the AFC Women's Asian Cup in 2022," AIFF President, Praful Patel said.

"The tournament will galvanise the aspiring women players and bring in a holistic social revolution as far as women's football in the country is concerned," he added.

The tournament will feature 12 teams, expanded from the previous slot of eight teams.

India qualifies directly as hosts. The event will also serve as the final qualification tournament for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.

The tournament comes as the latest boost to AIFF as India is slated to host the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup next year.

India had also hosted the AFC U-16 Championships in 2016 and the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2017.

"The tournament will play a huge role in further popularising women's football in India. The Women’s Asian Cup 2022 comes on the back of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup India 2020, and will help us sustain, and build on the momentum gained," AIFF General Secretary, Kushal Das said.

New Delhi, Jul 23: With the highest single-day spike of 45,720 cases, India's coronavirus count crossed 12 lakh mark on Thursday.

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare informed that 1,129 deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours.

The total number of coronavirus cases stand at 12,38,635 including 4,26,167 active cases, 7,82,606 cured/discharged/migrated. The cumulative toll has reached 29,861 deaths.

Maharashtra has reported 3,37,607 cases, highest in the country followed by Tamil Nadu with 1,86,492 cases. Delhi coronavirus count has reached 1,26,323 cases.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 1,50,75,369 samples were tested till July 22 out of which 3,50,823 samples were tested yesterday.
