Nurturing a green future: Mohiudeen Wood supports ‘Mangaluru Flower City’

Mangaluru, Sept 24: UAE based global timber conglomerate Mohiudeen Wood Works Co. LLC, as part of their corporate social responsibility programme, has partnered with Mangalore Flower City Foundation, a non-profit green initiative recognized by the Mangaluru City Corporation and Karnataka Forest Department, which aims to transform and beautify Mangalur’s cityscape with a systematic and organized approach that will involve plating various flowering trees in the city over a series of stages.

The foundation comprises of individuals from both government and private sectors who have joined forces with a common goal to transform Mangalore and make it a model green city in India.  

The foundation intends to actively engage the local community and implement a programme which will encourage Mangaloreans to take pride in their city. It will also create a grassroots movement and greater sense of conservation that is aimed at protecting and enhancing green belts within the city, which will ultimately enrich our society and improve the quality of urban life. The foundation has already commenced planting flowering trees along main roads that crisscross the city. The first stage will encompass planting and nurturing about 2000 saplings that will be planted on both sides of the road from KPT Circle to Mangalore international airport.

Udupi, Jul 8: Four people have been arrested by the police in connection with the murder of Yogish Poojary (26), a resident of Laxminagara in Tenkanidiyoor in Udupi. A gang, which arrived in a car had attacked Poojary with lethal weapons on July 6.

The arrested are rowdy sheeter Sujith Pinto (37), his elder brother Rohit Pinto (43) Annu alias Pradeep (40) and Vinay (36). Police have continued the manhunt to nab two more accused – Girish and Anup. 

The accused were arrested from Kallianpur last night following which the accused were to murder spot as part of investigation.  The police also seized the car and knives that were used for the crime. 

Police sources said that the accused were under the influence of alcohol when the stabbed Poojary repeatedly with knives.

Three teams headed by sub-inspectors of Malpe, Udupi city and city crime branch took part in the operation.  The accused have been booked under station under section 143, 147, 148, 302 and 149 of IPC.

Bengaluru, Apr 16: In order to bring uniform act for all universities in the state under the Karnataka University Act 2017, the state government formed a committee in this connection.

As per the instruction of deputy chief minister Dr C N Ashwath Narayan, higher education department has issued an order to form a committee under the chairmanship of R Vasudeva Athre.

The other members are former Bengaluru university Vice-Chancellor Prof B Thimmegoda, IIT Bengaluru director Prof Sadagopan, Srusti institute of arts and design technology Geetha Narayan Srusti, centre of educational and social studies president Dr M K Sridhat and state higher education parishad Executive Director Dr M S Kori, co-member of the committee.

Udupi, Jul 27: Karnataka chief minister B S Yediyurappa has appointed BJP leader Lalaji R Mendon as the new chairman of the State Backward Classes Commission.

Mendon is a three-time MLA from the Kapu Assembly constituency. During his second term as MLA, he was the Director in Konkan Railway’s Board.

Mr Yediyurappa has appointed 24 MLAs to different corporations in the state. Mendon is only one from coastal Karnataka.

Mendon is the only MLA representing BJP from fishermen's community. He was the president of Kaup unit of BJP Yuvamorcha. He also served as the state BJP secretary.
