Cuttack, May 11: In a shocking incident in Odisha, a retired judge, his wife and son were arrested on Wednesday on charges of trying to kill their 23-year-old pregnant domestic help.

When the police rescued Mini Pradhan at the Mahanad river barrage in Cuttack, she had a shocking tale to tell before she was whisked off to the ICU with multiple injuries.

Mini alleged that she was thrown off the barrage by contract killers, ostensibly at the behest of the retired judge and his kin. She claimed that she had an affair with the judge's son, and became pregnant.

"They forced me to undergo abortion. When I refused, they hired goons and got me kidnapped from their house and tried to kill me. I am a poor girl. I want justice," Mini said.

According to Mini, the alleged contract killers brought her to the Jobra barrage in Cuttack in the pitch darkness of the night. She was badly beaten up, her hands and legs tied up and then she was thrown off the bridge into the Mahandi river. But as luck would have it, Mini fell on the iron gates of the barrage and survived to tell her story. It was nothing short of a miracle.

Mini said that she had been working at the judge's house for the past five years as a domestic help, and that his son Satyabrata even married her. When she found out his family had gotten him engaged to another woman, she objected.
The police claim the contract killers were engaged by the judge and his family to eliminate Mini for a sum of Rs 3.5 lakh, a charge the accused have denied.

S Praveen Kumar, DCP, Cuttack, said, "The accused might claim anything but the circumstantial evidence, the victim's statement established the charges we have made. She is in ICU with multiple fracture and doctors are giving her appropriate treatment."

The former judge, his wife and son are now in custody pending trial. But the contract killers are still at large.
