He said BSNL official Ramadas Dhareshwar had lodged a complaint that 495 bundles of OFCs kept on the premises of the General Manager's office in Kajubag were stolen between April and July. The value of stolen cables was estimated at Rs. 1.76 lakh.

Mr. Vernekar said the police began investigation by checking autorickshaw stands for a clue. They narrowed down on autorickshaw driver Hasan Razak (21) and he provided information about the theft.

Based on this information, the police arrested Mansoor Abdul Khalid Sheikh (26), Narayan Ekanath Naik (36), Vinayak Guddappa Vaddar (22), Shabbir Mohammad Sheikh (32), and Basha Sayyad Ibrahim (48).

Mr. Vernekar said that the stolen cables were shifted to Shirwad. The accused then melted the cable and converted them into copper bricks.

A BSNL employee had tipped the accused about the cables in the office compound. The employee was yet to be arrested, he said. The accused had confessed that they had stolen the cables 15 days ago, Mr. Vernekar said.
