OIC expresses concern on rising hate crimes against Muslims

Islamabad, Sept 30: Organization of Islamic Cooperation which has been the collective voice of Muslim world adopted a statement calling respect of Islam, the revered personalities and its symbols, said a statement issued by Pakistan Foreign ministry.

The statement proposed jointly by Pakistan and Turkey was adopted on the sidelines of UNGA at New York. 

Pakistan Foreign Minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi expressed serious concerns on the intensification of hate campaigns which deliberately targeted Muslims and the Islamic religious symbols. 

Earlier, Pakistan had raised the matter of caricature competitions at the diplomatic level with the United Nations, OIC and European Union. 

Pak Prime Minister Imran Khan had also expressed concerns and subsequently a resolution was passed in Pakistan cabinet condemning the campaign of derogating Islam. PM Imran Khan had even assured the parliament that the matter will be raised during the OIC ministerial meeting in New York. 

Mr Qureshi expressing concerns during his bilateral meeting in New York said that freedom of expression comes with concomitant responsibilities, and should be exercised keeping in view the ethical, moral and legal obligations.

Joint Statement which is a reflection of the government's commitment to play its role in garnering support through joint action of OIC, even rejected provocative acts like the holding of the competition and contest to ridicule Islam and aimed at inciting violence.

Feb 13: Two Indian crew on board a cruise ship off the Japanese coast have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, the Indian Embassy in Japan said on Wednesday as authorities confirmed that 174 people have been infected with the deadly disease.

The cruise ship Diamond Princess with 3,711 people on board arrived at the Japanese coast early last week and was quarantined after a passenger who de-boarded last month in Hong Kong was found to be the carrier of the novel virus on the ship.

A total of 138 Indians, including passengers and crew, were on board the ship.

“Due to the suspicion of novel coronavirus (nCoV) infection, the ship has been quarantined by the Japanese authorities till February 19, 2020,” the embassy said in a statement.

“Altogether 174 people have been tested positive for nCoV, including two Indian crew members,” it said.

All the infected people have been taken to hospitals for adequate treatment, including further quarantine, in accordance with the Japanese health protocol, it said.

Beijing, June 30: China said on Tuesday it was concerned about India’s decision to ban Chinese mobile apps such as Bytedance’s TikTok and Tencent’s WeChat and was making checks to verify the situation.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters during a daily briefing that (the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government of) India has a responsibility to uphold the rights of Chinese businesses.

India on Monday banned 59, mostly Chinese, mobile apps in its strongest move yet targeting China in the online space since a border crisis erupted between the two countries this month.

The apps are “prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India, the defence of India, the security of state and public order", the ministry of information technology said in a statement, which came two weeks after 20 Indian Army personnel were killed in a violent clash on the India-China border in Ladakh.

The companies have been invited to offer clarifications before a government panel, which will decide whether the ban can be removed or will stay.

The move also came ahead of military and diplomatic talks between India and China scheduled this week.

New Delhi, Aug 9: Indian on Sunday achieved a grim milestone after recording the highest single-day spike of 64,399 coronavirus cases, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

As many as 861 deaths were reported in the country in the last 24 hours, taking the cumulative toll to 43,379.

With the new cases, the country's coronavirus count has reached 21,53,011 including 6,28,747 active cases and 14,80,885 cured/discharged/migrated.

Maharashtra has 1,47,355 active coronavirus cases, the highest in the country.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 7,19,364 samples were tested on August 8 while over 2.41 crores samples so far have been tested in the country.
