Onion prices double in parts of Karnataka amidst rain fury

Shivamogga, Aug 25: Onion prices have doubled to Rs 30 per kg in parts of Karnataka due to a shortage in supply caused by heavy rains and floods in North Karnataka and adjacent parts of Maharashtra, according to traders.

"Before floods, 1 kg onion used to cost around Rs 15, now it touches Rs 30 in the wholesale market and Rs 40 in retail shops and street vendors. We import onions from Maharashtra and also use the onions that are grown here but recent floods have damaged the roads in North Karnataka affecting the supply," said a trader, Subramani.

"Even trucks from Pune are stuck in major cities. We are waiting for fresh goods. Big trade agencies like Mourya Export in Pune, BLS Murthy and Nagappa Chetty in Bengaluru are also in panic," he further added.

Ranchita, a housewife said: "It is hard to run a house if the prices of onion will keep rising like this. People can not afford such costly onions. The prices of onion have now gone up to Rs 40, and if this continues, it will not be easy for a very large section of society to manage their house."

The traders fear that the onion prices may rise further up to Rs 60 due to the festival season.

Over 1,200 assigned for contact tracing in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Jul 8: Karnataka has drafted 1,246 government employees into the crucial task of contact tracing to fight the coronavirus pandemic, and they have been warned of action if they refuse to work.

These are Group A, B and C employees from various departments who have been asked to report to senior IAS officer V Manjula, who heads a task force on Covid-19 contact tracing.

In an order, Chief Secretary TM Vijay Bhaskar on Tuesday said additional human resources were required to strengthen contact tracing, which is “a very important part” of controlling the spread of Covid-19.

6,000 chickens buried alive in Belagavi as prices drop

Belagavi, Mar 10: Around 6,000 chickens were buried alive by some poultry farm owners here as the rate of flesh in the market dropped even below the cost price due to Coronavirus scare.

The poultry farm who buried the chickens on Monday evening belonged to Lolasuru village in Gokak Taluk of the district.

One of the owners, Nazir Makandar, said that there was no demand for chicken because of threat of Coronavirus.

Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat leads rally in DK Shivakumar’s bastion

Kapalabetta under the aegis of Hindu Jagran Vedike’s ‘Kanakapura Chalo’ campaign against the construction of the world’s largest Jesus statue there.

Hundreds of protesters of the Vedike staged a protest march in the city starting from the Kanakapura Ayyappaswamy temple.

“We are not here to disturb the peace. We have met each other at the wedding of Sriramulu’s daughter. So you know who I am, DK Shivakumar. How long will you continue with these lies? Is the intention behind the statue of Jesus to solidify your vote bank? Build the statue in America or England, we will not allow it here,” said the RSS leader as the keynote speaker at the rally.
