Only God can stop rapes, police can't do anything: UP governor

UP governorLucknow, Jul 22: In a controversial remark, Uttar Pradesh Governor Aziz Qureshi on Monday said rape cases could not be stopped even if entire police force was deployed for women's safety and only a divine intervention could check such crimes.

Qureshi's statement comes after SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav stirred up a controversy earlier with his statement that even with 21 crore people in Uttar Pradesh, the number of such cases were the least in the state.

"Even if the entire police force is deployed, then also rape will not end...ocurrence of rape cannot be stopped", Qureshi, the officiating governor told a TV news channel.

"It is possible perhaps if the god takes an incarnation and comes down otherwise crime cannot be controlled", Qureshi said, adding "there is a need to create public opinion, an atmosphere against crime and create fear among the culprits." Later in the evening, Qureshi sought to clarify his remarks, saying he was quoted out of context.

"For stopping crime against women there is a need to change the mentality of society and stern action need to be taken against culprits and it was for stressing this that I had stated that entire police force cannot check rape otherwise, it can stop only when god takes an incarnation and come down", he told another TV channel.

The governor's remarks have come in for severe condemnation by political parties in the state with BJP stressing that it is most "unfortunate."

"The governor issuing such a statement is most unfortunate...It lowers the dignity of his office and also harms the sentiments of the majority of people", Lucknow unit president of the BJP, Manohar Singh said. The outgoing Governor from whom the Governor-designate Ram Naik is scheduled to take over tomorrow, also expressed his displeasure over crimes being politcised.

"Crimes should not be politicised...Rape should not be an issue only for condemning the government", he said, rooting for an impartial investigation by the police so as to ensure punishment to the guilty at the earliest.

When sought his reaction on the investigations into the Mohanlalganj murder case of a woman, he said, it required to be probed further. "What I have read about the investigation in the newspapers, I am not satisfied with it... Earlier it was said that six people were involved in the crime and later it was said that it was the handiwork of only one", Qureshi said.

Idukki, Aug 7: Several people lost their lives and dozens of tea estate workers are feared trapped under soil in Kerala’s Munnar after torrential rains triggered a massive landslide on today. 

As many as five bodies have been recovered and rescue workers are fighting inclement weather to remove the debris.

According to rescue workers, four lanes of quarters and a church are buried under mud and around 80 people are feared trapped.

Seven people have been rescued so far and shifted to the hospital.

Sources said a portion of Pettimudi came crashing down on the workers colony with a deafening roar in the wee hours of Friday.

As people were sleeping in the quarters, there was little time to escape.

Further, with the Periyavara bridge being washed away, it became all the more difficult for rescue workers to reach the spot.

The construction of a new temporary Periyavara bridge however, is underway.

The bridge was previously destructed during the deluge of August 2018. Later during the north west monsoons and the south west monsoon of 2019, it suffered damage again.

The present bridge, which got damaged on Thursday after Kannimala river levels rose, was constructed under the leadership of Coir fed.

Although a new concrete bridge has been constructed near the temporary bridge in Periyavara, vehicle  movement has not been possible because the authorities are yet to build its approach via road.

The new bridge is to be constructed at a cost of Rs 4.75 crore from Devikulam MLA S Rajendran's fund.

The entire area has been cut off from outside world and communication networks have also crashed.

Teams of Fire and Rescue personnel, NDRF, revenue officials, estate workers and police are struggling to conduct rescue operations.

Meanwhile, District collector H Dhineshan said a team of rescue personnel was sent to Pettymudy after he was briefed about the mishap and search operations to locate and rescue people are underway.

Facilities have been arranged at the hospitals nearby to provide necessary treatment facilities to the people being rescued.

New Delhi, July 13: The number of active Covid-19 cases in India crossed the 3 lakh mark on Sunday even as fresh infections during the day surged to another new peak, crossing 29,000 for the first time. After staying over 500 for the past two days, the daily death toll came down slightly to 492.

While the focus has been on recoveries, the number of active Covid-19 cases in the country has been steadily rising. It hit the 1 lakh mark on June 4 and went past 2 lakh 23 days later. It has taken just 15 days more to reach 3 lakh.

India reported 29,271 new cases on Sunday, the fifth straight day of record rise in daily infections. With this, the country’s coronavirus caseload has risen to 8,79,060, two days after hitting the 8 lakh mark, as per data collated from state governments. Active cases stood at 3,02,466 while more than 5.53 lakh people were declared cured of the infection.

Covid-19 deaths in the country rose to 23,175 after 492 fatalities were added on Sunday, translating to a case fatality rate of 2.6%. The CFR has been steadily dropping with the surge in cases.

New Delhi, Feb 12: The Centre on Wednesday said the NRC data in Assam is safe even though some technical issues were visible and that will be resolved soon.

The Union Home Ministry clarification came in view of reports that data of the final list of the National Register of Citizens has been made offline from its official website.

"The NRC data is safe. Some technical issues are in visibility on cloud. These are being resolved soon," a home ministry spokesperson said.

The data was not available for a couple of days and it created panic in the public, mostly among the people excluded from the list as the rejection certificates were yet to be issued.

NRC State Coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma accepted that the data has been made offline, but refuted the allegation of any "malafide" intent in it.

The cloud service for the huge set of data was provided by IT firm Wipro and their contract was till October 19 last year. However, this was not renewed by the previous coordinator.

So, the data got offline from December 15 after it was suspended by Wipro, Sarma said.

He said the state coordination committee had decided to do necessary formalities in its meeting on January 30 and wrote to the Wipro during the first week of February.

"Once Wipro makes the data live, it will be available for public. We hope people will be able to access it in the next 2-3 days," Sarma said.

The complete detail of exclusion and inclusion of bonafide Indian citizens in the NRC was uploaded on its official website http://www.nrcassam.nic.in after the final list was published on August 31, 2019.

The final NRC was published by excluding 19,06,657 persons. A total of 3,11,21,004 names were included out of 3,30,27,661 applicants.

After the earlier NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajela relinquished the charge on November 11 following his transfer to home state Madhya Pradesh on a direction from the Supreme Court, Sarma was appointed in his place on November 9.
