'Only performers to get Congress tickets for 2018 Karnataka polls'

Bengaluru, Jun 13: Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi today decried the trend of "outsiders" walking away with party tickets and made it clear that "performance"would be the main criteria in the choice of candidates for the 2018 Karnataka Assembly polls.

He expressed reservations about 'outsiders' getting tickets through "helicopter system".

"We have elections before us; I have told Venugoaplji (General Secretary in-charge of Karnataka) that whoever stands with the people and is working for the Congress, whether it is a leader or a worker, only they get thetickets," he told a KPCC meeting here.

"...party workers work, leaders work, but sometimessome other people get tickets through helicopter system justahead of elections. Some time even people from other party get tickets through helicopter system," he said.

Gandhi said he had sought a list of MLAs actively working for the party.

"You still have time...go amidst people, raise their issues and find solutions for them. Whoever works well, whoever is seen amidst the people, Congress will give ticket to him or her, whether he or she is a big leader or a small worker," the Congress vice president said.

He was speaking at theKarnataka Pradesh Congress Committee's (KPCC) extended general bodymeeting here in the presence of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah,party's state chief G Parameshwara and other leaders.

The party has already announced that Siddaramaiah will be the party's face in the state Assembly polls.

In an attempt to maintain balance, the party has retained G Parameshwara as the PCC chief and appointed two working presidents and a campaign committee chief.

On BJP trying to come to power inKarnataka, Gandhi said wherever they go, they will makeone community fight with another.

While accusing the BJP of winning the elections inUttar Pradesh by dividing the communities, he said Congressbelieved in uniting the communities.

"They divided every single community in Uttar Pradesh and that is how they won the election; when they divide, we unite. So our job is to ensure everybody in Karnataka feels that this is their government," he said.

Talking about the new AICC team sent to Karnataka under the leadership of party General Secretary In-charge Venugopal, Gandhi said the team was directed to ensure every worker and leader in the state feel that he is part of the "family" called Congress.

"This is a family and every member must feel that hehas a place and he is being heard. Everyone can't be made happy, but every one can be embraced," he said.

Noting that across the country, farmers were struggling, Gandhi said there was "fear and pain" among them.

He accused the BJP of abandoning and forgetting the farmers and advised the state government to assist the ryots.

"Karnataka's farmers should feel that this is their government, and I am confident that the chief minister is constantly listening to them and working for their interest," he added.

Gandhi's statement comes at a time when there has been a strong demand for farm loan waiver, owing to consecutive years of severe drought in the state.

Udupi, May 2: All the 18 people who were advised self-quarantine in connection with the Thekkatte petrol bunk incident have been tested negative, however, they were asked to continue the 14-day quarantine, said DHO Sudhirchandra Suda on Saturday.

the petrol bunk at Thekkatte was sealed after a Covid infected person had food and took bath at the petrol bunk, while he was travelling from Mumbai to Mandya.

The employees and the owner of the petrol bunk along with the six employees at Sasthana toll gate were asked to quarantine themselves for 14 days.

Ballari, June 30: A video clip of dead bodies of covid-19 victims being disgracefully thrown into a pit said to be in Karnataka’s Ballari has gone viral on social media triggering outrage from netizens.

Ballari Deputy Commissioner SS Nakul ordered a probe. He told media persons that the veracity of the video is still under question and that it still needs to be established if the video was taken in Ballari.

In the video, a pit is seen which appears to be disinfected. The video features masked men covered in body suits bringing dead bodies from a black hearse van in black body bags one by one and throwing the dead bodies into the same pit. In all, three dead bodies are thrown into the same pit in the video.

"We have assigned an Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) to enquire and verify the same. We are awaiting reports. We don't know yet if it (the video) is from Ballari or not," Nakul said.

The district which has so far reported around 800 cases in the last three months has also witnessed around two dozen deaths.

Twitterati on Tuesday raised questions about the handling of the bodies. "Even dead have some respect and they deserved a decent burial," said a social activist from Ballari. Similar reactions echoed on social media and some also pointed out on how the family members who have to stay away from burials feel about it.

Covid burial protocol

According to the protocol set by the Union Health Ministry for the burial of Covid-19 patients, the patients' orifices (nose, mouth and ears) have to be sealed and the body has to be wrapped in three layers of personal protective equipment (PPE). Thereafter it should be placed in a body bag. Family members should not be allowed to accompany the body in the hearse van. Covid-19 victims have to be given a deep burial. The grave should be minimum 10-feet deep.

The grave should be disinfected with bleaching powder and the area should be cordoned off so that the general public is not in the vicinity.  The vehicle used to transport the dead body of a Covid-19 victim -- ambulance or a hearse van -- has to be disinfected for 16 hours before being used again. Most Covid-19 victims in the state have had burials in the absence of family members as they are generally in quarantine for being the primary contacts of the patient.

Kasaragod, Jan 3: A serving officer of the Central Intelligence Bureau (CIB) was found dead inside his car in Bekal town near here early on Friday.

Police sources said the officer, Rijo Francis (35) has been under treatment after he had an heart attack last year.

Police suspect that the death could be due to heart failure.
