Opposition targets Modi for not greeting nation on Eid

August 5, 2014

New Delhi, August 5: The Opposition on Tuesday targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not being sufficiently effusive in extending greetings to the nation on the festival of Eid, even as he has visited temples across the country, more recently the Pashupatinath Temple in Nepal on Monday.modi at pashupathinath

While TMC raised the issue of the PM not extending greetings on EId, the Congress was upset over the discontinuation of Iftar parties by the PM.

Berhampore MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said after Independence, most Prime Ministers and even Atal Behari Vajpayee had followed the tradition during Ramzan, and wanted to know why that practice was discontinued.

This comment drew criticism from the BJP and Speaker, Sumita Mahajan said personal matters cannot be raised in the House.

Speaking during Zero Hour, TMC’s Sudip Bandyopadhyay who began with a reference to communal tensions in the country and asked the government to remain alert and cautious, alluded to Mr. Modi’s temple visit in Nepal and said that while he appreciates his religious sentiments, he should communicate greetings to the followers of other religions as well.

“A new government has come into power; Government of India, I think, should remain alert, cautious and vigilant to prevent communal tensions; otherwise safety and security of the common people of the country and the secular fabric of this vast country will be under threat. The Government should rise to the occasion and assure the House,” he said.

He said the Prime Minister visited Pashupatinath temple and offered puja with 2400 kg ghee,“…We appreciate it, but the PM should have greeted the nation on Eid also. It was equally expected that the Prime Minister should communicate Eid Mubarak to others also.… as these are the common sentiments, ethos and feelings of the country. All castes and creeds, all sections of the people should be greeted with happy Vijayadashmi at the time of Vijayadashmi and Eid Mubarak at the time of Eid. Why is there such a difference?” he said.

Mr. Bandyopadhyaya’s observations drew a sharp reaction from the Treasury benches and the BJP MPs objected to the comments. The Congress, however, wanted to raise the issue as well, but Speaker Sumitra Mahajan asked Adhir Ranjan to associate with the TMC.

At this, the Congress began protesting and trooped into the well of the House to raise slogan for not being allowed to speak despite having given notices. The House was then adjourned for 15 minutes.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu made a statement in the House denying that the government has not treated other religions on par. “This Government believes in ‘Sarva Dharma Sambhava’. The Prime Minister visited Pashupatinath Temple. He has also given his greetings to the whole Muslim community across the country. It has been widely published,” he said.

Raipur, May 25: A union minister was caught on camera issuing threats to district administration officials in Chhattisgarh saying that she “knows how to take people to a room and beat them with belts"

Officials were taken aback when Renuka Singh, Minister of State for Tribal Affairs, delivered this dialogue during her visit to the quarantine centre at Balrampur, around 400 km from Chhattisgarh capital Raipur on Sunday.

Dilip Gupta, a resident of Balarampur district in Chhattisgarh, had accused the chief executive officer and tehsildar of the district panchayat of assaulting him in a quarantine centre in the area following a quarrel over shoddy facilities. Renuka Singh took cognizance of the matter and reached the quarantine centre to speak to Dilip Gupta.

The minister, on reaching the quarantine centre, received details of the incident from Gupta and his family and lashed out at the officials for "beating him up".

In a video, Renuka Singh is seen cautioning the officials to not think of BJP workers as "weak".

"Ye bhagwadhaari BJP ke karyakartao ko kamzor mat samajhna. Janpad me baithke aur aap tehsil me baith ke jo bhed-bhaav kar rahe hain BJP ke karyakartao ke sazth, bhool jaiye (Don't think of saffron-wearing BJP workers as weak. Forget the discrimination that you are showing towards BJP workers)," Renuka Singh said, lambasting the officials.

However, the minister did not stop there and went on to threaten the officials saying she knows how to 'thrash people with a belt'.

"Andheri kothri me le jaa ke na main belt khol ke thokna jaanti hu bohot acche se (I very well know how to lock people in a dark room and thrash them with a belt)," Renuka Singh can be heard saying in a video from the incident.

Dilip Gupta, who was put under quarantine after he recently arrived from Delhi, had reportedly complained about the quality of food and basic facilities in the centre and had even uploaded a video on social media over the same after officials failed to address his issues.

New Delhi, Jan 10: The Supreme Court while hearing petitions challenging restrictions in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday stated that the right to access the internet is a fundamental right under Article 19 of the Constitution of India.

"It is no doubt that freedom of speech is an essential tool in a democratic setup. The freedom of Internet access is a fundamental right under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution," a two-judge bench headed by Justice N V Ramana stated while reading out the judgment.

The top court said that Kashmir has seen a lot of violence and that it will try to maintain a balance between human rights and freedoms with the issue of security.

It also directed the Jammu and Kashmir administration to review the restrictive orders imposed in the region within a week. “The citizens should be provided highest security and liberty,” the apex court added.

The top court made observations and issued directions while pronouncing the verdict on a number of petitions challenging the restrictions and internet blockade imposed in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370 in August last year.

The Supreme Court had on November 27 reserved the judgment on a batch of petitions challenging restrictions imposed on communication, media and telephone services in Jammu and Kashmir pursuant to revocation of Article 370.

The court heard the petitions filed by various petitioners including Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad and Kashmir Times editor Anuradha Bhasin.

The petitions were filed after the central government scrapped Article 370 in August and bifurcated Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories -- Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Following this, phone lines and the internet were blocked in the region.

The government had, however, contended that it has progressively eased restrictions.

Jammu, Jan 15: Fresh landslides kept the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway shut for the third consecutive day on Wednesday, leaving over 5000 vehicles stranded.

"There were four fresh landslides in Digdol and Panthiyal belts on the highway in Ramban district. The traffic on the highway remained closed for the third day today", a police officer told PTI.

On Monday, heavy rains triggered shooting of stones in Moumpassi, Digdole and Panthiyal areas, forcing a suspension of the traffic, the official said.

Snowfall in Kashmir side of the highway, including Jawahar Tunnel, since Sunday has resulted in blockade of the highway.

"No fresh traffic was allowed from Nagrota in Jammu for Kashmir", he said.

As a result of the blockade of the highway, over 5000 vehicles remained stranded at various places en route from Lakhanpur in Kathua district to Banihal belt of Ramban district and also on the Kashmir side.
