It seems that the series of honours bestowed on Adaminte Makan Abu isn’t yet to stop. This small film which told a story of sacrifice, love, pure devotion and all that we describe as humanitarian values will be the official entry at the Oscars.
The Film Federation of India chose this film among a group of biggies and the decision gives out the feeling that our jury has still not lost their sense for identifying films that stand above in terms of story, plot and performance and not on the merit of star power, technical prowess and multi-million budgets.
Adaminte Makan Abu, directed and co-produced by debutant Salim Ahamed shot to fame after it won four National Awards and also equal number of Kerala state film awards, which includes the best film and best actor for Salim Kumar who shared the national award with Tamil actor Dhanush. At the 58th National awards this film won the best film, actor, music direction and photography awards.
"When the full jury of feature film in National Film Awards headed by J.P. Dutta presented their report to the honourable minister this year (Union Minister of Information & Broadcasting Ambika Soni), they told her that Malayalam feature film'Adaminte Makan Abu, which has won the best feature film award, should be India's official entry to the Oscar this year," said Bhupendra Kainthola, director Indian Panorama And National Film Awards.
David Among Goliaths
Adaminte Makan Abu had to face a stiff competition to be selected as India’s official entry to the Oscars. Supran Sen, chairman of Film Federation of India, the body that selects movies for Oscars, told PTI that Adaminte Makan Abu beat 15 other movies to be selected as India's official entry for the Oscars.
Just take a look at the films that were pitted against this David - 'No One Killed Jessica', '7 Khoon Maaf' and 'Dhobi Ghat' (all Hindi), Rajinikanth-starrer 'Enthiran', 'KO' and 'Aadukalam' (Tamil) and 'Moner Manush' (Bengali). All the films in competition were top-notch in terms of production values, star power, theme and performance.
Dhobi Ghat is an Aamir Khan production, the directorial debut of his wife Kiran Rao, and was critically acclaimed. Aamir, who himself is a veteran at the Oscar stage, was also part of the cast. Films such as No One Killed Jessica and 7 Khoon Maaf stood apart from the usual Bollywood offerings and boasted of strong star cast and stellar technicians. These films were challenged with equal migt by films such as the blockbuster Enthiran along with KO and Aadukalam from Tamil Nadu.
The small film from Malayalam with a comedy actor, who is relatively unknown in the national circle, playing the title role and a debutante director at the helm stood no chance among the Goliaths if it were not for its merit – a story that tugged ones hearts strings and performances that opened eyes to a different talent – Salim Kumar.
"It is a simple story which describes human values," chairman of Oscar Nominations Committee of FFI, B Lenin said while explaining the rationale behind nominating the film, whose music scored by Isaac Thomas Kottukkapally also won the national award. Madhu Ampat who wielded the camera won the national award for cinematography.
Adaminte Makan Abu tells the tale of Abu (Salim Kumar), a poor attar-seller in his 70s whose only remaining wish in life is to go for Hajj pilgrimage. He and his wife Aishumma (Zarina Wahab) scrounge and save every penny they have to fulfill this dream. The movie revolves around how this poor and simple souls strive hard to adhere to the rules mandatory for a Hajj pilgrim and the trials that they have to face in the process.
This film portrays the pain of old people who are foresaken by their children, the goodness of heart and puriy of soul. Thankfully this work almost steered clear of the terrorist theme that has become a staple in films involving Muslims. Writer-director Salim Ahamed has addressed themes that holds universal appeal with his directorial debut and his film stands tall among the biggies due this reason.
