Oscar-winning Sean Penn producing Khashoggi murder film

Istanbul, Dec 6: Oscar-winning actor and filmmaker Sean Penn has reportedly begun filming a new documentary about the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul earlier this year. 

Penn, accompanied by a crew of around 10 including bodyguards, was spotted shooting in front of the consulate building in the Turkish city on Wednesday, Turkey's state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

The two-time Oscar winner was also seen outside the consul general's nearby residence, the agency said. 

Khashoggi, a columnist for the Washington Post and a US resident since 2017, was killed during his visit to the consulate to obtain marriage-related paperwork on October 2.

Despite searches of the consulate and other places, the whereabouts of his remains are still unknown.

In one image shared by Anadolu, Penn was seen outside the mission where the Saudi writer was strangled before he was cut up into pieces by a 15-man Saudi team especially sent to Istanbul for the task.

The actor was also expected to meet Khashoggi's Turkish fiancee, Hatice Cengiz, during his visit, according to Turkish newspaper Daily Sabah.

The murder of Khashoggi, a vocal critic of the Saudi government and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, prompted an international outcry and forced many countries to reassess their ties with the kingdom.

After weeks of repeated denials that it had any involvement with his disappearance and contradictory statements, Riyadh eventually acknowledged last month that Saudi officials had planned and executed the killing, blaming a "rogue" team. 

The CIA has reportedly assessed that Prince Mohammed, also known as MBS, ordered the killing of Khashoggi.

So far, 21 people, including security officers, have been arrested in Saudi Arabia in connection with the killing.

Penn has previously attracted controversy as a result of his forays into politics and current affairs, especially after he and Mexican-American actress Kate del Castillo interviewed Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman while he was on the run.

Penn, 58, won Oscars for best actor for his roles in Mystic River and in Milk.

New Delhi, Jun 26: With the highest single-day spike of 17,296 COVID-19 cases reported in the last 24 hours, India's COVID-19 count reached 4,90,401 on Friday, said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).

The country also saw 407 deaths in the last 24 hours, which pushed the death toll to 15,301.

The total number of cases includes 1,89,463 active cases, 2,85,637cured/discharged/migrated cases, as per the MoHFW.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the total number of samples tested up to June 25 is 77,76,228; the number of samples tested on 25 June is 2,15,446.

Maharashtra remains the worst-affected state in the country with 1,47,741 cases. The active cases in the state are 63,357. The number of people cured or discharged stands at 77,453 while the death toll is at 6,931.

Delhi has so far reported 73,780 cases. The active cases in the national capital stood at 26,586. While the cured and discharged numbers stood at 44,765. The death toll in the city is 2,429.

Tamil Nadu has so far reported 70,977. With active cases at 30,067 and the number of cured or discharged at 39,999, while the death toll stood at 911.

British lawmaker Debbie Abrahams' e-Business visa was revoked as she was involved in anti-India activities and the cancellation was conveyed to her on February 14, government sources said on Tuesday.

Asserting that the grant, rejection or revocation of a visa or electronic travel authorisation is the sovereign right of a country, the sources said Abrahams was issued an e-Business visa on October 7 last year which was valid till October 5, 2020 for attending business meetings.

"Her e-Business visa was revoked on February 14, 2020 on account of her indulging in activities which went against India's national interest. The rejection of the e-Business visa was intimated to her on February 14," a source said.

Abrahams, who chairs a British parliamentary group on Kashmir, was denied entry into India upon her arrival at the New Delhi airport on Monday.

Government officials had said on Monday also that she was informed in advance that her e-visa had been cancelled.

New Delhi, Feb 26: The death toll in northeast Delhi communal violence over the amended citizenship law rose to 20 on Wednesday, according to GTB Hospital authorities.

On Tuesday, the death toll was 13.

"The death toll has risen to 20 today," Medical Superintendent of GTB Hospital, Sunil Kumar, told PTI.

Earlier, at least four bodies were brought to the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital from the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital, a senior official said.
