A total of 15.42 lakh young men and women aged between 18 and 19 across Karnataka have enrolled in the electoral rolls to exercise their franchise for the first time in the upcoming the State Legislative Assembly.

The number of virgin voters or first time voters this time is less compared to 2013 Karnataka assembly polls wherein a total of 35.58 lakh youngsters had got enrolled.
This time, of the 15,42,121 first time voters 7,72,649 were enrolled during the current special summary revision. Of these, 2,743 were born in 2000, according to the final (tentative) 2018 rolls.

Revealing these statistics, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) for Karnataka Sanjiv Kumar told presspersons in Bengaluru on Saturday that a special communication drive had been taken up to reach out to young voters and women voters.

The final electoral rolls will be published on February 28 and the number of voters stands at 4.96 crore for now. The Bangalore South Assembly constituency has the highest number of voters in the state at 5.01 lakh, whereas Sringeri in Chikkamagaluru district has the lowest with just 1.62 lakh voters.

In a first, the Election Commission will set up all-women polling stations in Assembly constituencies where population of women is high. "All personnel in these polling stations will be women," Kumar said. The voter gender ratio is now 973 women for 1,000 men and it is improving, he added.

Accessibility is the theme of the 2018 elections and the office of the chief electoral officer is working with the Department of Women and Child Development (DWCD) to launch a special drive and identify voters who are persons with disabilities. "The DWCD has details of 12 lakh persons with disabilities. Suitable polling stations are being identified for them," Kumar said.

He stressed that voters can apply to be added to the electoral rolls even after they are published on February 28. "It's a misconception that addition, deletion or modification cannot happen after final rolls are published. Electoral roll revision is a continuous process," he said.

As many as 30.41 lakh applications have been received under the special summary revision, of which 17.12 lakh were for addition and 10.41 lakh for deletion. "No summary deletion is taking place this time like it happened in 2013 when 16 lakh names were deleted. So far, we have deleted 10.13 lakh voters, of whom 3.67 lakh are dead," he said. Kumar also launched a logo for the 2018 Assembly polls whose tagline is 'Inclusive, Accessible and Ethical'.

He said complaints pertaining to inclusion of immigrants in the electoral rolls were highest in the Bengaluru municipal limits. "We are discussing this closely with all political parties," he said. The Election Commission has asked all parties to appoint booth-level agents to monitor the process of roll revision.

Bengaluru, Mar 2: The Opposition Congress and the JD(S) members protested in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly on Monday over the BJP leader Basavaraj Patil Yatnal's alleged derogatory remark against veteran freedom fighter H S Doreswamy.

Opposition Leader in the Assembly and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, raised the issue, immediately after the obituary reference of sudden demise of former Minister C Chanigappa, and sought permission from the Speaker to raise the issue of Yatnal's outburst in the House stating that the matter of hurling defamatory remark against Gandhian Doreswamy, by Mr Yatnal, was very much serious. However, the treasury bench members protested and urged the Speaker not to allow the matter to discuss as the issue was not in the agenda.

The Speaker, Vishveshwar Hegde Kageri, promised the Congress leader about permitting the issue after the House adopts resolution on the thanksgiving motion for the Governor's address of the joint House recently and asked Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa to continue his reply to the Governor's address.

The opposition Congress and the JD(S) members, protesting the Speaker's action, trooped into the well of the house and raised slogans against the BJP government.

The Chief Minister continued his reply amidst the din before the Speaker adjourned the House for 30 minutes after the House adopted the thanksgiving motion to the Governor's Address.

Mangaluru, Apr 13: Struck by the boredom of lockdown imposed to curb the spread of coronavirus, a 17-year old was caught on Sunday trying to sneak his friend out of his apartment complex by stuffing him inside a suitcase, police said.

"A minor, aged 17-years-old, a resident of Orchid Apartment, Balmatta invited his friend, a resident of Motisham Apartment, Pandeshwar to stay with him on April 11, Saturday," said PS Harsha, the Commissioner of Police, Mangaluru.

The friend wanted to return back to his apartment in Pandeshwar the next day but due to strict security put in place, he got inside a large trolley suitcase. Security guards at the apartment, however, got suspicious when they noticed the wobbling of the suitcase that was being wheeled to the gate.

Based on the suspicions, security personnel alerted the residents of the building and opened the suitcase from which they were shocked to find the boy's friend stepping out. Police were later called in.

A case has been registered against the two minors at the East Police station, police said adding that the duo will be produced before the Juvenile Justice Board.

Mysuru, Jan 19: Karnataka Rural Development and Panchyat Raj Minister K S Eshwarappa on Sunday claimed that Popular Front of India and Social Democratic Party of India have been indulging in anti-national activities.

Talking to media persons here, he said the government is mulling to ban and take action against PFI and its political arm SDPI.

It was recommended even during the previous government, but it was not taken seriously, he added.

He said that the BJP will ensure that all the MLAs who were instrumental in the party coming to power (the then-disqualified MLAs who joined BJP from Congress and JDS recently and won the bypoll subsequently) will not be let down and be given suitable posts in the government.
