Over 900 sheep, 2 buffaloes massacred to appease goddess in Karnataka village

Koppal, Jan 31: More than 900 sheep and two buffaloes were massacred by “devotees” to appease goddess Dyamavva during a fair at a remote village in Karnataka on Tuesday.

The fair is held once in five years at Malakanamaradi village in Gangavati taluk of Koppal district.

As per tradition, initially two buffaloes were sacrificed and offered to the idol goddess in the wee hours of Tuesday. Later, at least two to five sheep were sacrificed from each house in the village.

It is said the massive animal sacrifice could not be prevented though some village youths had tipped off the police department in advance.

Animal lover M N Sharanesh Patil alleged that animals were sacrificed in the presence of the police.

Udupi, May 21: In a shocking development, as many as 27 fresh coronavirus positive cases were reported in the coastal district of Udupi today. 

Another shocker is, 16 among 27 covid-19 patients are children. The rest are six men and five women. 

Interestingly, all of them have inter-state travel history. 23 had come from Maharashtra and 3 from Telangana. Another one had come from Kerala to Manipal. More details are awaited.

Mysuru, Aug 1: A young covid-19 warrior and activist has become the latest victim of novel coronavirus in Karnataka’s Mysuru district. 

The deceased is Khaleel ur Rahman (27), who was the office manager at Farooqia College of Pharmacy. 

During Covid-19 lockdown, he was working as a volunteer and was part of Mysuru City Corporation team also which is involved in the covid related work. 

Khaleel was also part of the team formed by IAS officer P Manivannan, who led the crucial Covid-19 relief efforts across Karnataka. He was also an activist of Social Democratic Party of India.

During the lockdown, he was distributing groceries and other necessary things among poor and migrants in Mysuru. 

Recently he fell ill and admitted to a private hospital. He was suffering from breathing difficulties. He breathed his last in the hospital without responding to any treatment.

Udupi, Apr 5: Excise Department has formed a special patrol teams to check the illegal sale of liquor in the district during the lockdown period.

All liquor stores are closed till April 14 in view of the lockdown to contain Covid-19 spread. However, reports of liquor being sold illegally have come to the notice of the Excise Department.

In a stern warning, the department has stated that officials will verify the closing and opening stock at the liqour stores and if any discrepancy is found the violators will be penalised. The department has received over 20-30 calls regarding the illegal sales.
