Over 900 sheep, 2 buffaloes massacred to appease goddess in Karnataka village

Koppal, Jan 31: More than 900 sheep and two buffaloes were massacred by “devotees” to appease goddess Dyamavva during a fair at a remote village in Karnataka on Tuesday.

The fair is held once in five years at Malakanamaradi village in Gangavati taluk of Koppal district.

As per tradition, initially two buffaloes were sacrificed and offered to the idol goddess in the wee hours of Tuesday. Later, at least two to five sheep were sacrificed from each house in the village.

It is said the massive animal sacrifice could not be prevented though some village youths had tipped off the police department in advance.

Animal lover M N Sharanesh Patil alleged that animals were sacrificed in the presence of the police.

COVID-19: There is no chance of getting infected from corpse, clarifies DC

Mangaluru, Apr 25: In the backdrop of protest staged by locals against the cremation of a 75-year-old woman, who was tested positive for coronavirus, Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B on Friday stated that there is no chance of anyone getting infected from a corpse.

Protocols, as laid by the Centre with regard to cremation of Covid-19 patients, will be followed, said Sindhu in a statement.

The release added that the COVID-19 victims would be buried as per their religious customs. Not more than 20 people would be allowed to perform the last rites. Even closest relatives of the deceased would not be allowed to touch or bathe the body, the release said.

Neighbour of Bantwal woman who died of covid-19 tests positive for coronavirus

Mangaluru, Apr 21: An elderly woman from Bantwal taluk in Dakshina Kannada district has been diagnosed with covid-19, a deadly disease caused by coronavirus.

The state health and family welfare department, in its bulletin released on Tuesday morning, confirmed that 67-year old woman suffering from covid-19.

The woman is said to be a neighbour of the woman from who died last Friday after being infected with coronavirus.

It is suspected that the virus reached elderly woman's body as she was in touch with the deceased.

The woman was admitted to Covid - 19 Hospital, Mangaluru, on the April 18 after she developed breathing problem. It is learnt that she is responding to the treatment

Tabassum wins Mangaluru Press Club Award for service to HIV affected children

Mangaluru, Feb 19: Social worker Tabassum who has been rendering selfless service to HIV/AIDS affected children through her shelter home 'Snehadeep' at Bejai has been selected for the Annual Award of Mangaluru Press Club for the year 2019.

Tabassum, a resident of Konaje was chosen by a team of judges comprising Prof Balakrishna Gatti, Dr Vasanth Kumar Perla and Dr Nagaveni Manchi.
