Over 900 sheep, 2 buffaloes massacred to appease goddess in Karnataka village

Koppal, Jan 31: More than 900 sheep and two buffaloes were massacred by “devotees” to appease goddess Dyamavva during a fair at a remote village in Karnataka on Tuesday.

The fair is held once in five years at Malakanamaradi village in Gangavati taluk of Koppal district.

As per tradition, initially two buffaloes were sacrificed and offered to the idol goddess in the wee hours of Tuesday. Later, at least two to five sheep were sacrificed from each house in the village.

It is said the massive animal sacrifice could not be prevented though some village youths had tipped off the police department in advance.

Animal lover M N Sharanesh Patil alleged that animals were sacrificed in the presence of the police.

Mangaluru, Apr 12: Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has appealed to the Additional Chief Secretary to Karnataka government Jawaid Akhtar to exclude Dakshina Kannada district from hotspot/ red zone area pertaining to coronavirus, saying that the district has not reported any new case since last five days.

KCCI president Isaac Vas said DK district has not reported any new case of COVID-19 in the last five days. Of the 12 cases reported in the district, six are from Kasargod and one from Bhatkal.

None of the patients suffering from coronavirus are in ICU or put on ventilator, he said in a statement.

Bengaluru, Apr 15: Karnataka government will explore Ayurveda for fighting the deadly COVID-19, Ayurveda practitioner Dr Giridhar Kaje said here on Wednesday.

After meeting the Chief Minister, Dr Kaje informed media that on a trial basis, ten Coronavirus patients will be administered Ayurvedic treatment in a designated hospital.

Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has consulted senior doctors on the issue, he said.

Bengaluru, Mar 28: Karnataka has reported 10 new positive cases of COVID-19 between 5 pm yesterday and 8 am today, taking the tally to 74 in the state.

"Ten new COVID-19 cases have been reported between 5 pm yesterday and 8 am today, taking the total number to 74 in Karnataka, which includes three deaths and five cured/discharged persons," said the State Health Department on Saturday.

The total number of active COVID-19 cases in the country has climbed to 873, including 78 cured, discharged and migrated cases and 19 deaths, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Saturday.
