Over 900 sheep, 2 buffaloes massacred to appease goddess in Karnataka village

Koppal, Jan 31: More than 900 sheep and two buffaloes were massacred by “devotees” to appease goddess Dyamavva during a fair at a remote village in Karnataka on Tuesday.

The fair is held once in five years at Malakanamaradi village in Gangavati taluk of Koppal district.

As per tradition, initially two buffaloes were sacrificed and offered to the idol goddess in the wee hours of Tuesday. Later, at least two to five sheep were sacrificed from each house in the village.

It is said the massive animal sacrifice could not be prevented though some village youths had tipped off the police department in advance.

Animal lover M N Sharanesh Patil alleged that animals were sacrificed in the presence of the police.

Bengaluru, Mar 13: In the wake of coronavirus outbreak, Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa has summoned an emergency meeting with ministers and senior officials on Friday to discuss the situation.

The schools, malls and other public places have been shut to control the spread of the deadly virus.

Schools in the state have announced early summer vacation for their students this academic year as a precautionary measure amid Covid-19 scare.

Udupi, July 1: In a concerning development, another SSLC student in Udupi district has tested positive for covid-19.

With this the number of covid-19 patients among SSLC students in the coastal district rose to three. All of them are girls.

The fresh case has been reported from Byndoor. She has already written three papers.

She had reportedly developed some of the symptoms and hence her throat swabs were sent for testing on June 30. Today she received positive report, sources said.

Udupi, May 23: Issuing a stern warning to people against venturing out unncessarily 7:00 pm on May 23 and 7:00 am on May 25, Udupi deputy commissioner G Jagadeesh said that those who violate the lockdown norms will face punishment. 

“Lockdown should be observed strictly across Udupi district. If anyone is found roaming around, we will not speak, but our batons will”, he said in a press meet here today. 

He suggested the people to buy all necessary things for 36 hours of total lockdown before 7 p.m. today. 

Chief Minister has already clarified that a complete lockdown would be observed in the State on every Sunday. Only the medical shops, newspaper delivery, milk parlours will be permitted to function. Vehicular movement has also been restricted during this period, he said.

If marriages have been scheduled already on Sunday, they will be considered as a special case. However, prior permission is must for scheduled weddings, he said.

Udupi SP N Vishnuvardhan and ZP CEO Preethi Geholot CEO ZP were also present.
