A P Aboobacker Musliyar elevated as Grand Mufti of Sunnis in India

Kozhikode, Feb 27: Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musliyar has been made Grand Mufti, the top authority to give non-binding advice and opinion on Islamic jurisprudence and religious practices of the Sunnis in India.

Musliyar, who has been the general secretary of the All-India Muslim Scholars Association for over a quarter century, was selected as Grand Mufti at the Gareeb Navaz peace conference held at Ram Leela Maidan in New Delhi on Monday, a release stated.

The conference was attended by over 1,000 representatives of Sunni associations from 23 States. Hazrath Mannan Khan Razvi Barelvi, a prominent Barelvi scholar from Uttar Pradesh, conferred the title on Musaliyar.

The event was organized under the banner of All India Thanzeem Ulamae Islam. Grand Mufti is a position that holds the supreme authority to issue fatwa (authoritative legal opinion on Islamic matters), said a news release issued by Markazu Ssaqafathi Ssunniyya, an Islamic educational institution founded by the Sunni leader here.

Sayed Ameen Miya Barakthi, founder of Aligarh Al Barakath Institute, Sheikh Hazrath Sayyid Babr Ashraf, vice-president of Ajmeer Darga, Mufthi Shfaq Husain Qadiri, national president of Tanzime Ulama, among others were present at the function.

Addressing the gathering at the function, Musaliyar said Sunni Muslims in India should be united under a platform irrespective of the differences.

The Sunni movements in India would attempt to strengthen peace in the country along with development works in education and humanitarian sectors, he said.

Hubli, Jun 12: An inspector of Hubli Rural police station on Friday was suspended for delaying the submission of a charge sheet in the matter relating to sedition charges against three Kashmiri students for making a video with pro-Pakistan slogan.

A second Joint Magistrate First Class (JMFC) court in February sent the three students, identified as Basit Ashik Sophi (19), Talib Majid (19) and Amir Mohiuddin (23), to police custody till February 28.

The Kashmiri students are under judicial custody since February 17 following their arrest for raising pro-Pakistan slogans and posting a video of the same on social media on the night of February 16.

Mangaluru, Mar 23: People in Thukkottu and Ullal area of Mangaluru are in panic after a local woman who recently returned from a foreign country fell ill.

On receiving information the health officials from Ullal PHC visited the house of the woman, who is suffering from fever and cold. They provided her medicines and asked her to remain quarantined at home.

It is said that the woman's mother, who had come to a grocery shop near Thokkottu, informed the shopkeeper that her daughter, who had returned from abroad, was suffering from fever.

The alert shopkeeper, understanding the gravity of the situation, informed ZP Standing Committee on Health and Education President Dhanalakshmi Gatti, who in turn brought the issue to the notice of health officials.

The health officials rushed to her house and diagnosed her. However, the authorities have requested the local people not to be panicked as it is not yet confirmed whether the woman is suffering from COVID-19 caused by the novel coronavirus.

Bengaluru, Jul 26: Today, one of the Co-founders of Infosys, SD Shibulal announced that over the last three days (22nd - 24th July) his family members have sold a portion of (representing approximately 0.20 per cent of the paid-up equity share capital) their holding in Infosys Ltd on the stock exchanges.

Proceeds from the partial stake monetization will be utilized for a combination of philanthropic and investment activities.

The sale was executed by Citigroup Global Markets India Private Limited as the Sole Broker.

The Founders, have served Infosys in various capacities, since its inception in 1981 until October 2014. Over the three decades, the Founders have nurtured the company transforming it into one of the professionally run companies in India with a global presence.
