Padmavati row: DK Shivakumar seeks protection for Deepika

Belagavi, Nov 20: Karnataka Energy Minister DK Shivakumar on Monday said he would write to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah seeking protection for Bollywood star Deepika Padukone in the wake fringe groups publicly threatening her over the release of her film Padmavati.

Shivakumar took to Twitter to express his outrage on BJP office-bearer from Haryana, Surajpal Amu, reportedly announcing a bounty of Rs 10 crore for Deepika Padukone’s head.

“It is condemnable that a BJP office-bearer is placing a bounty of Rs 10 crore on @deepikapadukone, who is from our state & the daughter of one of India’s most respected sportsman,” Shivakumar said in a series of tweets. “BJP must apologise and make sure intimidation doesn’t happen.”

Several fringe groups have publicly threatened to cause bodily harm to Deepika, including “chopping her nose off.” In the wake of protests, the December 1 release of the Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directed Padmavati has been postponed. Padukone is the daughter of former All England Open champion Prakash Padukone and completed her education in Bengaluru.

Karnataka Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy said recently that the state government will not impose a ban on the release of the movie, and said steps will be taken to maintain law and order.

“I appeal to all Indians, especially women & artists to speak in one voice against such elements & uphold our constitutionally guaranteed freedoms. If anyone has objections, they must approach the CBFC. Instead of doing so, what gives these people the right to threaten artists?” Shivakumar said. “These sort of threats, especially towards women, are yet another sign of growing intolerance and bigotry in the country.”

Shivakumar also wondered if this was the way the BJP showed respect towards women, and called for immediate action to be taken.

I agree with you but, if something happens to her family by these hoodlums, it will be a huge news, not only Karnataka will lose credibility, but these hoodlums will gain reputation and notoriety, which would be very unfortunately.

It would mean that Karnataka has fallen to a level of dystopia. international news, will have field day adding bad repo to our nation.

All life be it farmer, beggar or star has to be protected as citizens..

Actually the best way would be to arrest the people starting such campaign’s and issuing bounty’s.

And what about the police, law and order, constitution?

The movie glorifies Rajputs, there bravery and Valery is highlighted.

there is not even a single frame shared by both the actors.

And India currently has bigger issues than this to be tackled

Dear Gopal, "no offence but If you do some research before putting forth such statement
you will find out that this is a real issue

First of all this is extremely wrong from an elected individual, its not from a teacher
scholar etc it is from Haryana’s BJP chief media coordinator Suraj Pal..
It appears to be a diversion tactic,
so that focus is changed from actual issues.
Padmavati producer includes Viacom company which is owned by Mukesh amabani.
Now first of all this action done by this representative - is wrong lets agree to it.
As for fatwa ( not patwa) let me enlithen you. Fatwa means opinion in arabic language , So if you have an opinion it can also be called as your fawa in arabic…
Lastly there has always been a huge cry on any fatwa’s issued, I am surprised your comment meant that this fatwa went unnoticed.
But generally this fatwas are given by idiots who don’t have any bite but only barks
whear as if a d&* is capable of biting then precautions have to be taken for protection of the intimidated individual."please think with open mind and without color glasses, there is no need to polorasie everything

I understand films have been made in the past based on Padmini. Kamonar Agun or Flames of Flesh (1930), Maharani Padmini (1964) in Hindi, Chittoor Rani Padmini (1963) in Tamil starring Sivaji Ganesan and Vyjayanthimala. Wonder how these stories were told ! Surely Bhansali would have glamourised it, going by his past ventures !

At this rate, we will have curbs of freedom of speech and we will all need police protection. Wonder what is happening to the sense and sensibilities of our people. No tolerance, no patience with 'my way or the highway' attitude. This fanatical attitude will soon destroy the nation!

Looks like DK already have some clue. So raising protection request. Hope it is not from internal news where they want to do something to say something against BJP. But he never raises concern on Patwa raised by Muslim groups. Strange???

Bengaluru, Jul 22: Karnataka's Covid-19 task force on Tuesday decided that the state government will regulate the supply of Remdesivir, the drug used in the treatment of coronavirus infected patients, to private hospitals to check black marketing and hoarding.

"Remdesivir which is currently available in the government hospitals will be supplied to private hospitals through the government.

This will help curb black marketing of this drug," Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar's office said in a release.

Along with Sudhakar, other task force members, including Health Minister Sriramulu, Deputy Chief Minister C N Ashwath Narayan and Chief Secretary T M Vijay Bhaskar attended the meeting. However, Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai was not part of it as he was out of Bengaluru.

At the meeting, the government has also fixed the rate for Covid-19 tests in private labs- Rs 2,000 for government referred cases and 3,000 for self-reporting cases.

It was also decided to purchase 4 lakh antigen test kits and 5 lakh swab test kits to ramp up testing, the release said, adding that approvals have also been given for additional drugs for the treatment of Covid-19 patients.

The decisions also included increasing monthly salary for Ayush doctors to 48,000, MBBS doctors to 80,000 and nurses to get 30,000 for next 6 months.

The task force also made it clear that private hospitals have to reserve 50 percent beds for the government for Covid-19 treatment. The remaining 50 percent can be used by the private hospitals for Covid-19 and non-Covid-19 treatment.

Private hospitals provide treatment under Ayushman Bharat scheme (ABARK) for Covid-19 patients.

Those cases in which treatment does not cover under the scheme can be charged as per the user charges, the release said.

A committee will be formed to supervise and recommend the purchase of equipment and medicines for Covid-19 treatment, which will be headed by ACS, ITBT Department.

Approval has been given for the procurement of N-95 masks and lakh PPE kits for the safety of healthcare workers. The decision also has been taken to connect oxygen pipeline to 4,736 beds in 17 government medical colleges, which will enable high flow oxygen for these beds besides being beneficial for future use as well.

According to the release, 16 RTPCR and 15 Automated RNA extraction units will be established to ramp up testing and this will help achieve the target of 50,000 tests per day. "On the whole approvals given for purchase of equipment and upgradation of existing facilities at government hospitals is estimated to be about Rs 500 Crore," it added.

Bengaluru, Jun 20: Nine candidates filed their nominations for the June 29 elections to seven seats of the Karnataka legislative council on Thursday.

While the BJP has fielded four candidates, the Congress has given tickets to two and the JD(S) to one candidate respectively for the biennial elections to seven seats of the legislative council to be elected by the MLAs.

One independent and one person claiming to be affiliated to BJP have also filed their nomination papers at the office of Legislative Assembly Secretary MK Vishalakshi, who is also the returning officer for the polls.

"The nominations of two candidates without any proposers is likely to be rejected during scrutiny of the papers on Friday. So seven candidates will be in the fray for as many berths. Hence the election is likely to be unopposed if no one withdraws nominations," official sources said.

While scrutiny will take place, Friday, June 22 is the last date for withdrawal of candidature.

The election is necessitated as the term of seven MLCs — Naseer Ahmed, Jayamma, M C Venugopal, N S Bose Raju, H M Revanna (all Congress), T A Sharavana (JD(S)) and independent D U Mallikarjuna — will end June 30.

Based on their strength in the Assembly, while BJP is in a position to win four out of seven seats, Congress can win two and JD(S) one.

Twenty-eight valid votes of MLAs are required for each candidate to win.

Four BJP candidates MTB Nagaraj, R Shankar, Sunil Vallyapure and Pratap Simha Nayak filed their nominations today, after the party high command announced their names late on Wednesday.

Nagaraj and Shankar had played a key role in the formation of the BJP government after the coup that led to the collapse of Congress-JD(S) coalition. They had subsequently defected to the saffron party.

While Nagaraj lost the bye-elections held later, Shankar did not contest in exchange for a Council berth promise.

Among the other BJP candidates, Vallyapure is a former MLA from Chincholi and had given up his seat abiding by the party decision to field Avinash Jadhav, while Nayak is a senior party worker and had served as Dakshina Kannada district president.

A BJP insider said Shankar and Vallyapure have been given MLC tickets as they had given up their Assembly seats, while Nagraj was considered as he had faced a defeat during the bypolls because party MP B N Bachhe Gowda's son Sharath contested as a rebel.

Nayak's candidature is being seen as BJP high command's choice by party insiders, ignoring the state units recommendation of AH Vishwanath, a former JD(S) MLA who had defected to BJP.

Two Congress candidates, senior party leader BK Hariprasad and incumbent Naseer Ahmed also filed their nominations today.

Hariprasad's name was announced by the party on Wednesday, even as his tenure in Rajya Sabha is to end on June 25.

Naseer Ahmed, who is retiring as MLC on June 30 is seeking another term.

The choice of candidates by the Congress high command is being seen as a mixed bag for CLP leader Siddaramaiah as Naseer Ahmed is said to be close to him, while Hariprasad is considered among his adversaries.

In a surprise move, JD(S) has fielded Govinda Raju from Kolar as the party candidate for the MLC polls.

Incumbent MLC T A Sharavana and outgoing Rajya Sabha member Kupendra Reddy were seen as the prime aspirants for the ticket.

JD(S) leader and former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy said Govinda Raju was chosen as it would help organise and strengthen the party in Kolar and Chikkaballapura region.

The independent candidate who has filed his papers today is P C Krishnegowda, and the one who filed his nomination claiming to be associated with BJP is Mandikkal Nagaraja.

BJP has selected the candidates based on their wealth only and not on their education.    Wealth is the primary preference for bjp and these people come to politics only to skip from tax and accumulate unaccountable money and save black money.    they never come to politics with an intention to serve public.   We cant find 1 percent of politicians who is sincere and cares for public.    All of them are selfish and look their pocket only.   This is general in all the political parties.
