Pakistan: PM House to be converted into educational institute

Islamabad, Sept 13: The Prime Minister House in Islamabad will be turned into a postgraduate institution, said Pakistan's education minister Shafqat Mehmood on Thursday.

Addressing the media, Mehmood was quoted by Geo News as saying that the people of the country were annoyed by the previous governments' "royal standards" of living and thus Prime Minister Imran Khan">Imran Khan has decided that he will not stay in the Prime Minister House and governors will not reside in Governor Houses in an effort to not waste public money.

Mehmood informed that the annual expenditure of the Prime Minister House amounted to 470 million Pakistani rupees. He stated that the property would be turned into a "top-class" educational institute and that the land behind the Prime Minister House would also be judiciously utilised.

The education minister also announced that the governor houses in Sindh, Punjab and Balochistan provinces would be converted into museums for the public.

In his previous speeches, Khan chided the previous governments of looting public money and pledged that he would not stay in the Prime Minister House to cut down costs. He also urged the governors across the country to follow suit.

The cricketer-turned-politician underscored that he would restore Pakistan to its former glory by clamping down on corruption and money laundering and propagating the policy of austerity. He also added that he and his ministers will also not use luxury vehicles for commuting and that the public money would be spent only for the upliftment of the poor.

Washington, Apr 17: The confirmed coronavirus death toll in the United States reached 32,917 on Thursday, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

The toll as of 8:30 pm (0030 GMT Friday) marked an increase of 4,491 deaths in the past 24 hours, by far the highest daily toll in the pandemic so far.

But the figure likely includes "probable" deaths related to COVID-19, which were not previously included. This week, New York City announced it would add 3,778 "probable" coronavirus deaths to its toll.

As of Thursday night, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had recorded 31,071 coronavirus deaths, including 4,141 "probable" virus deaths.

The US has the highest death toll in the world, followed by Italy with 22,170 dead although its population is just a fifth of that of the US.

Spain has recorded 19,130 deaths, followed by France with 17,920.

More than 667,800 coronavirus cases have been recorded in the United States, which has seen a record number of deaths over the past two days.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump unveiled plans Thursday evening to reopen the US economy, allowing each state's governor "to take a phased deliberate approach to reopening their individual states".

Islamabad, May 13 : The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Pakistan rose to 34,370 on Wednesday after new infections were confirmed in the country.

As per province-wise breakup of the total tally cited by Radio Pakistan, so far 13,225 cases have been registered in Punjab, 12,610 in Sindh, 5,021 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 2,158 in Balochistan, 759 in Islamabad, 475 in Gilgit Baltistan and 88 in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

As many as 2,255 cases positive were confirmed, while 31 deaths reported during the last 24 hours.

At least 737 patients have died so far while 8,812 stand recovered, the media reported further.

British lawmaker Debbie Abrahams' e-Business visa was revoked as she was involved in anti-India activities and the cancellation was conveyed to her on February 14, government sources said on Tuesday.

Asserting that the grant, rejection or revocation of a visa or electronic travel authorisation is the sovereign right of a country, the sources said Abrahams was issued an e-Business visa on October 7 last year which was valid till October 5, 2020 for attending business meetings.

"Her e-Business visa was revoked on February 14, 2020 on account of her indulging in activities which went against India's national interest. The rejection of the e-Business visa was intimated to her on February 14," a source said.

Abrahams, who chairs a British parliamentary group on Kashmir, was denied entry into India upon her arrival at the New Delhi airport on Monday.

Government officials had said on Monday also that she was informed in advance that her e-visa had been cancelled.
