Mangaluru, Apr 21: Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel has rubbished as baseless the allegations that he prevented the BJP high command from issuing the ticket to former minister Krishna J Palemar from Mangaluru City North constituency for the May 12 Karnataka assembly polls.

The BJP this time has fielded young leader Dr Bharath Shetty from Mangaluru City North, where Mr Palemar was defeated by Congress leader B A Mohiuddin Bava in 2013. Mr Palemar earlier said: “This time BJP has issued tickets to four candidates of Bunt community in Dakshina Kannada district and completely ignored the people of backward classes. I feel sad to say that our own MP (Mr Kateel), for whose victory in Lok Sabha polls I had spent hugely, is responsible for this injustice.” 

Responding to the allegations made by Mr Palemar, the two-time MP said that Mr Palemar was naturally hurt over the fact that he could not get ticket this time. “He (Mr Palemar) is one of the senior leaders of BJP and strengthened the party in the district. I respect him. He blamed me because he loves me,” said Mr Kateel told media persons.

Mr Kateel, who also belongs to Bunt community, claimed that his party did not believe in caste politics. “I neither supported nor opposed any candidate based on his caste. We had just forwarded the list of all ticket aspirants from the district to the Delhi. This time high command directly involved in finalising the list of candidates. My role in issuing tickets to candidates is zero,” he said.

Mr Kateel also downplayed the dissidence in the saffron party over ticket allotment. “It is quite natural that some ticket aspirants express their pain after the party issues ticket to others. But, BJP is not a broken house in our district. We all are united,” he said expressing hope that Mr Palemar too would campaign for the BJP candidate in his constituency.

Bengaluru, May 28: The Karnataka government has done away with previously mandatory COVID-19 testing for asymptomatic international travellers. 

The development comes a day after the government issued a circular, which allowed placing of international travellers into home quarantine if they had completed seven days of institutional quarantine.

A circular signed by Jawaid Akhtar, Additional Chief Secretary to the State Government, dated May 27, says that any “person who has completed seven days of institutional quarantine and is asymptomatic can be permitted for home quarantine with a COVID-19 test (RT-PCR), subject to undergoing a medical check-up.”

This check-up equates to thermal screening (with a required temperature of under 37.5C or 99.5F and pulse oximetry of under 94%). 

The circular added that all elderly people, over the age of 60, and those with comorbidities (such as Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, asthma, heart ailment, renal disease...etc) are “required to be clinically evaluated diligently prior to shifting them for quarantine.”

On Wednesday, Pankaj Pandey, Commissioner, the Department of Health and Family Welfare said that these new guidelines were based on recommendations from the COVID Task Force. A member of the COVID Task Force said that new strategies had been formulated based on the latest findings on how the SARS-Cov-2 virus affects people.

Hassan, May 8: A newly married couple accidentally fell into the Hemavathi river and drowned while clicking selfies near Henneli village in the district, police said on Friday.

The deceased were identified as Kritika (23) of the same village and Artheesh (27) of Belur taluk in the district.

They got married on March 20. Both were working in Bengaluru and were in the village due to the lockdown.

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 6: The 105-year-old Bageerathi Amma who scripted history when she appeared for her fourth standard exam in last November becoming the oldest learner of the Kerala State Literacy Mission has passed her exam with 74.5 per cent marks.

This grandmother from Parakulam in Kollam district of Kerala Bageerathi Amma has six children and 16 grandchildren.

Speaking to news agency ANI, CK Pradeep Kumar, district co-ordinator of State Literary Mission said on Wednesday, "Bageerathi Amma has passed her exam with 74.5 per cent marks. It is really an inspiration for others to follow her and continue their education," he said.

Ms Bageerathi had to stop her education at the age of nine when she was in Class 3 as she had to take care of her younger siblings.

Her yearning to continue her studies was fulfilled with the help of officials of the Literary Mission who helped her to realize her dreams. She scored 205 marks out of a total of 275 in the fourth standard equivalency examination.

The Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority is an autonomous institution under the General Education Department, Government of Kerala.

The programme aims to develop literacy skills through continuing education, provide chances of each and everyone interested in learning, enable the learners to make use of their learning in their daily life and ensure Secondary-level education to the whole of Kerala.

The main beneficiaries of this programme are illiterates, neo-literates, school drop-outs and those interested in lifelong education.
