Palestinian expatriates exempt from labor action

Jeddah, Nov 25: Saudi Arabia has exempted Palestinian and Burmese nationals who are found to be in violation of the new labor laws from deportation.

Palestinian and Burmese nationals comprise the bulk of expatriates who are unable to return to their countries due to internal strife in their countries.

Over half a million Palestinian expatriates currently live and work in the Kingdom, mainly in administrative positions and in professional categories.

Most Palestinians hold travel documents from Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Egypt.

Ambassador Imad Shaath, consul general of Palestine in Jeddah, told Arab News on Sunday that Palestinian expatriates who are in possession of Egyptian passports are exempted from the deportation process. The envoy expressed gratitude to the Saudi government for the kind gesture. He said that Palestinians with travel documents issued by Egypt would be able to apply for renewals at the Egyptian Consulate in Jeddah upon recommendation from the Palestinian Consulate.

He also thanked the Egyptian authorities for processing the documents of the huge number of Palestinian expatriates, saying that a sizable number of Palestinians had regularized their status.

He hailed Labor Minister Adel Fakeih for allocating a special quota for Palestinian expats under the Nitaqat scheme in the private sector.

The vast majority of Palestinians live in the Western region, some of whom have lived in the Kingdom for 60 years. Many of them have Egyptian passports.

Beirut, Aug 4: A massive explosion has shaken the Lebanese capital of Beirut, with a very high number of casualties expected.

A warehouse at the Beirut Port caught fire on Tuesday afternoon, triggering a huge explosion, Lebanon’s official National News Agency (NNA) reported.

Several smaller explosions were heard before the bigger one occurred.

Abbas Ibrahim, the head of Lebanon’s General Security, said that “highly explosive materials” confiscated earlier had been stored at the site.

Footage shared on social media captured the moment of the bigger explosion, with a colossal shock wave seen traveling fast across several hundreds of meters and shrouding the area in thick smoke.

The blast left enormous material damage to the surrounding buildings and structures. But it was not immediately known how big an area was affected.

There was also no immediate casualty count. Graphic amateur video from the scene showed bodies strewn on the ground, with their clothes blown off.

The NNA said rescue operations were underway. Ambulances were seen heading toward the scene in central Beirut.

Lebanese LBC television channel quoted Lebanon’s Health Minister Hamad Hasan as saying that the blast had caused a “very high number of injuries” and “extensive damage.”

Beirut Governor Marwan Abboud said an unspecified number of firefighters dispatched to extinguish the initial fire had been killed in the explosion.

“As they were putting out the fire, the explosion took place and we’ve [lost them],” he said, breaking down on live TV.

The explosion comes at a time when the Arab country is passing through its worst economic and financial crisis in decades, and amid rising tensions with Israel.

Dubai, May 22: A 43-year-old Indian businessman won USD one million (approximately Rs 7.59 crore) in the Dubai Duty Free draw.

Rajan Kurian, who owns a construction business in Kerala, had bought the ticket online.

Mr Kurian said he was grateful for the win, considering the gloomy circumstances prevailing in the world due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"I will set aside a good part of my win to help the needy. I feel grateful with the win but I need to share it with people who need it," he said. 

Mr Kurian said some of the money will go into growing his business.

"The last few months have been tough with the COVID-19 situation. My business has come to a standstill. This money will be put to good use," he said.

An Indian expat also won a BMW motorbike in the lucky draw held on Wednesday.

A longtime resident of Dubai for 30 years now, 57-year-old Syed Hydrose Abdulla, who works as a public relations officer in a beverages company, had also bought the ticket online.

Muscat, Jan 11: Oman's Culture and Heritage Minister, Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, took oath as country's Sultan on Saturday following the demise of Qaboos bin Said al-Said, the country's government confirmed on Saturday.

Sputnik quoted a report by sultanate's Al-Roya newspaper as saying that the new Sultan " affirmed the continuation of the country's modernisation and development in various fields."

The development comes after Qaboos bin Said, who had served as the ruler of Oman since 1970, died Friday at the age of 79.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had condoled Qaboos's demise and remembered him as the "beacon of peace for India and the world".
