Pampa award for poet KS Nissar Ahmed

Bengaluru, Oct 31: Kannada litterateur and thinker Prof. (rtd) K S Nissar Ahmed, has been selected for the Pampa award for the year 2017.

Established in 1987 by Government of Karnataka Pampa award carries a cash prize Rs 3 lakh, a citation and a memento. It is one of the highest literary honors conferred by the Department of Kannada and Culture.

Even though Nissar Ahmed was a professor in Geology, he was attracted towards to Kannada literature thanks to his friendship with Kuvempu. He gradually emerged as one of the greatest poets of Kannada.

Bengaluru, Apr 5: An elderly couple from Bengaluru

with a travel history to Dubai joined the list of coronavirus patients in the state, taking the total number of cases to 146, the health department said on Sunday.

The list includes four deaths and 11 discharges.

The 68-year old man and his 62-year old wife, hailing from Madiwala in the city, had returned from Dubai on March 22.

They were quarantined at a private hospital and have been asymptomatic.

Meanwhile, the government appealed to people who had attended the Tablighi Jamaat Congregation in New Delhi to contact 080-29711171 Arogya Sahayavani, the medical helpline number.

Bantwal, Jun 16: Two unmarred siblings committed suicide by self-immolation at Sangabettu in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada last night.

Neelayya Shettogar (42) and his sister Kesari (39) poured petrol on themselves before torching themselves at around 11 p.m. on June 15 inside a room of their house, police sources said. The siblings were reportedly facing health problems.

Neelayya's brother and latter’s wife were sleeping in the other room of the same house when the incident took place. They came to know only when they heard the screams of the duo.

Even though the siblings were rushed to the government hospital at Bantwal with the help of locals, the doctors declared them dead.

Bantwal rural police sub-inspector, Prasanna and staff visited the spot as part of investigation.

Very sad. What happening to our youths. Are they going crazy or the mountain fell on them?  Why do our people are becoming so coward? I think many are going under depression. Govt should set up rehabilitation/counselling centres in each Mandals/Taluks/Districts to treat such people.

Udupi, July 18 A 15-year-old boy lost his life due to electrocution after he came in contact with a live wire last evening near his house at Laxminagar under the limits of Malpe police station in Udupi. 

The deceased has been identified as Gautham (15), son of Manjunath Naiak, a resident of Laxminagar.  

Police sources said, the electrocution occurred while he was lifting a pump set from the well at his neighbour’s house. He died on the spot. 

A case has been registered at Malpe Police Station and investigation is on.

Gautham had recently appeared for SSLC examinations.
