Panchayat member among 3 women booked for bogus voting in Kasaragod LS seat

Kasaragod, Apr 30: Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Teeka Ram Meena has confirmed that three women had cast bogus votes in booth number 19 at Pilathara in the Kasaragod Lok Sabha constituency during the April 23 election.

On the CPI(M) argument that ‘open votes’ were being misrepresented as bogus ones, Mr. Meena said the election rules do not mention ‘open vote.’

Police cases would be registered against Padmini, Sumayya K.P. and Saleena N.P., the ‘bogus voters’ identified from live webcast feeds, under Sections 171 C, D and F of the Indian Penal Code for interference in the election process and impersonation.

Saleena, a sitting panchayat member, has been asked to step down and face the inquiry. A recommendation in this regard would be made to the State Election Commission (SEC), Mr. Meena said, disclosing the findings of a preliminary investigation based on a report filed by the Kannur Collector.

Padmini reportedly cast votes twice in the same booth while Sumayya, who had a vote in booth 24 of the same constituency, cast a vote in booth 19. Sumayya was, in fact, at the booth as a ‘relieving agent.’

Whether Sumayya and Saleena had also cast votes in their parent booths requires investigation, Mr. Meena said.

Bengaluru, Jul 29: Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar on Tuesday criticised BJP-led Karnataka government for limiting or omitting various topics including chapters on 18th century Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan and his father Hyder Ali.

Speaking to media here at Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) office, Shivakumar said Congress will not allow BJP government in Karnataka to "divert history".

"Tipu Sultan does not belong to one caste or a class. He is part of the history of this country. BJP government has removed chapters related to him for its political advantage. It is their decision whether they celebrate Tipu Sultan Jayanti or not, but he is part of our history. 

The President of this country Ramnath Kovind came to the Vidhan Sabha and praised Tipu's patriotism during a joint session," Shivakumar said.

"The BJP government has come to power today. Our history should not change. We will not let these people to covert or dilute history. This is the stand of the Congress party. Our experts will study the pros and cons of this decision," he added.

Shivakumar further said many countries around the world have praised the Constitution, Indian history and expressed their willingness to "adapt it".

"But the BJP is trying to curtail this. We need to educate our children. Our team will also study this and we will not let this happen," he said.
The Karnataka government, in a bid to reduce the syllabus for state board schools by 30 per cent, has limited or omitted various topics including chapters on Mysuru rulers Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan from the class 7 social science textbook.

The reduction in syllabus comes as schools are closed to prevent the spread of coronavirus in the state, and classes have been moved online.
The Department of Public Instruction of the Karnataka government also limited or removed various other topics from the syllabus of class 6 to 10 as they were repeated or can be alternatively taught.

Earlier, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had revised the syllabus for the classes IX to XII for the academic session 2020-21 in a "one-time measure" owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mangaluru, Apr 20: As Wenlock hospital has been converted into corona hospital, all the heads of private medical college hospitals have been instructed to treat Wenlock Hospital's out patients and in patients at a government hospital fare or at the charges of Wenlock Hospital, said Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh on Sunday.

Treatment is also been given at Bijai, Yekkur, Kulur, Jeppu, Surathkal, Kulai, Padil, Shaktinagar, Bengre and Bunder Primary Health Centers. Patients with MLC (Medico Legal Case) or Police Case may seek treatment at a private medical college or city primary center.

Some private hospitals have already agreed to provide free dialysis services, as requested by the government.

Bhopal, Mar 10: Senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh on Tuesday parried questions on the exact number of MLAs supporting the party in Madhya Pradesh amid a political crisis triggered by the resignation of Jyotiraditya Scindia and 14 MLAs loyal to him.

Repeating his allegation that the BJP was trying to destabilise the Congress-led government, Singh told reporters that the BJP had arranged three chartered planes for Bengaluru on Monday to fly out some MLAs loyal to Scindia.

"We want to know why Bengaluru is used every time to destabilise governments?" he questioned.

When asked about the number of MLAs supporting the Congress in the current political scenario, Singh only said, "Just wait".

He said an atmosphere of uneasiness has been prevailing in the BJP since the Kamal Nath government started cracking a whip on various mafias.

"We (the state government) are exposing Vyapam scam, e-tendering scam, Madhyam scam. In the honey-trap case, BJP men were found to be involved. This will be exposed," he said.

The political crisis in Madhya Pradesh precipitated with the resignation of Jyotiraditya Scindia over his apparent marginalisation in the state politics. Following Scindia's suit, 14 legislators loyal to him have sent their resignation letters via e-mail to Madhya Pradesh Raj Bhavan.

Scindia was subsequently expelled from the Congress by party president Sonia Gandhi.

Speculation that the Guna royal might join the BJP gained ground after he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi this morning.
