Bengaluru, Jul 29: The government of Karnataka has formed a six-member committee of experts to examine the Smart City plans prepared by seven major cities to use technology in governance.

mangaluruBengaluru, Mangaluru, Belagavi, Davangere, Hubballi-Dharwad, Shivamogga and Tumakuru have been chosen under the Centre’s Smart Cities Mission and each will get up to Rs 500 crore.

These cities have announced smart parking, smart water metres, app-based citizen service delivery, public Wi-Fi connectivity and other such technology-based projects. All of them will now need approval by a technical committee under the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC), the nodal agency for the Smart City project.

The committee comprises sustainability expert Prof T V Ramachandra from the Indian Institute of Science, geographical information systems (GIS) expert S Rajagopalan from IIIT Bangalore (IIITB), C-DAC principal technical officer Annarao Kulkarni along with three government officials.

According to a government order issued by the Urban Development Department, the committee will have the authority to vet the concepts, review detailed project reports and accord technical sanction to them.

“We will push for technology that really enables good governance without letting the government to just sleep over it,” said Prof Ramachandra, an ecologist who is at the forefront of the campaign to save lakes.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), for instance, has proposed 50 smart card-enabled public bicycle sharing points, 30 e-rickshaw stands, 35 e-toilets, water ATMs, 420 sensor-based smart dustbins and 50 designated vending kiosks - all connected to 1,250 smart telecom towers that will double up as streetlight poles. The city, like others chosen under the Smart City project, will get Wi-Fi connectivity.

“Our focus in the committee will be to make sure these technology projects are sustainable. Specifically, we will look at economic feasibility, environment friendliness and socio-cultural acceptability,” said IIITB’s Rajagopalan.

The panel is also expected to be mindful of past failures, especially with free Wi-Fi in public areas. A pilot of Wi-Fi hotspots in Bengaluru in 2014, including over a dozen access points on MG Road and Brigade Road, failed to take off because it was not feasible. “It was under-designed because of which internet speed was very slow. Also, like in most places around the world, public Wi-Fi has to be paid for by the municipality and authorities have to choose the right funding model,” Rajagopalan said.

Mangaluru, July 18: The Dakshina Kannada district administration is likely to earmark a common burial ground in the wake of growing resistance from residents of various localities in Mangaluru against burial of Covid-19 victims in their vicinity.

Recently, following protests by residents on Bolar, the body of a Covid-19 victim remained in the ambulance for hours together. The residents refused to allow the victim to be laid to rest at a burial ground attached to a mosque. The victim, who had been a resident of Idya in Surathkal, was subsequently laid to rest after DC’s intervention.

In a bid to avoid such instances in the future, the district administration has identified a burial ground on the outskirts of Mangaluru.

Former minister and incumbent Mangaluru MLA UT Khader said that he had discussed the problem at length with the officials of the Dakshina Kannada district administration, and had suggested they look for a relatively isolated space on the outskirts of Mangaluru city in order to avoid confrontation with the public.

“A parcel of land at Badaga Yekkuru, some 20km from the city has been identified as being suitable for the burial ground, but the district administration is yet to take a final decision,” Khader said.

Mar 11: The Karnataka government on Wednesday started a campaign called 'Namaste over Handshake' that encourages people to greet in the traditional Indian style, to tackle the spread of coronavirus.

The campaign also includes health advice on how people can protect themselves from the infection by adopting hygiene practices such as regularly washing hands to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

As part of the campaign, the state health and family welfare department has uploaded a poster on the social media, featuring a 'Bharatnatyam' dancer draped in a red saree saying 'Namaste'.

"Use Namasthe to greet others, fight against corona" read a message on the poster online.

The poster has health helpline numbers (104 and 011- 23978046) for public queries on the viral disease, which has claimed 4,251 lives worldwide.

A health department official told PTI that as part of the campaign, posters have been uploaded on social media and it would be printed and despatched to different districts to be put up at important junctions.

"We had been working on this idea. Kerala has already done it. They are using Kathakali dancers whereas we are using a Bharatanatyam dancer as our model," the official said.

Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar too had insisted that people should adopt 'Namasthe' or 'Namaskara' to greet people instead of handshakes or hugs.

Bengaluru, Feb 14: A 31 -year-old Bhojpuri dancer and another girl were rescued from human traffickers after the former alerted city police on landing at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) on Tuesday. They were to be received by a woman named Preethi at the airport.

The dancer had been told she was supposed to perform a few stage shows in the city, which has a significant Bhojpuri-speaking population. But when she realised she is likely to be pushed into flesh trade, she raised an alarm.

The woman, Radha (name changed), is a mother of four children and the lone breadwinner of the family. A few months ago, Radha came in contact with a woman named Soniya in New Delhi during a dance performance. Last month, Soniya got in touch with Radha and offered to pay Rs 40,000 per month if she performed in Bengaluru.

Radha agreed and was sent to Bengaluru from Chandigarh along with the other girl. During the journey, she learnt she was supposed to do more than just perform on stage. A shocked Radha informed the Central Industrial Security Force personnel manning KIA that she feared being pushed into prostitution. KIA police were informed and the women were rescued. Preethi was arrested.
