Panel gears up for 2018 Karnataka polls, writes to ministry seeking Rs 320 cr

The Karnataka State Election Commission (SEC) has written to state Finance Ministry asking to release Rs 320 crore to be spent for the upcoming Assembly polls slated for April-May 2018.

This amount is the double of what was spent for the 2013 state elections. Then, Rs 143.5 crore was spent for conducting the polls. In 2008, Rs 64.82 crore had been spent.

This year, the SEC has decided to use electronic voting machines (EVM) with voter verified audit trail (VVAT) in all the booths.

The number of booths has also increased. Due to inflation and price rise, the cost of the conducting the elections has risen sharply SEC sources told DH.

During the last elections, 54,261 booths were installed. This time there will be 57,000 booths across Karnataka. The number of eligible voters has risen from 4.46 crore in the last poll to 4.9 crore in the upcoming poll.

The bulk of the expenditure goes towards maintaining the staff on poll duty and booth level officers. The poll staff are paid between Rs 250 to Rs 350, sources said.

Lok Sabha (Parliamentary) elections cost more than Vidhana Sabha elections. The 2014 Parliamentary elections costed Rs 161.08 crore and the 2009 Parliamentary elections Rs 95.45 crore.

The Centre foots the bill for Lok Sabha polls and the state government bears the cost of Assembly polls.

Coronavirus forces Modi govt to defer NPR, first phase of Census

New Delhi, Mar 25: The exercise to update the National Population Register (NPR) and the first phase of the Census 2021 will not be held as scheduled due to the 21-day lockdown announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, officials said on Tuesday.

Both the exercises were supposed to be carried out from April 1 to September 30.
Due to the prevailing situation, the NPR and Census exercises have been deferred till further orders, a senior home ministry official said.
The Prime Minister has announced a 21-day lockdown across the country from Tuesday night due to the outbreak of the coronavirus.

Udupi's veteran politician commits suicide

Udupi, Feb 29: Senior Congress leader and Udupi’s crackers trader K Krishnaraja Saralaya allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a well outside his house at Paniyadi on Saturday.

He was 87, Krishnaraja was leading a solitary life. It is suspected that he ended his life ''due to mental agony''.

He is survived by two daughters. One is settled in Australia another is in Bengaluru. Saralaya had also served as President of Udupi Town Co-operative Society. The police visited the spot .

Long awaited Pumpwell Flyover inaugurated, finally!

Mangaluru, Jan 31: The Pumpwell flyover, part of the four-laning of Talapady-Kundapura stretch of National Highway 66, was finally inaugurated today.

Work on four-laning NH 66 between Talapady-Kundapur, excluding the Nanthoor-NITK Surathkal stretch, started in September 2010 and Pumpwell (Mahaveera Circle) flyover was a part of the project. Concessionnaire M/s Navayuga Udupi Tollway Pvt., Ltd., failed to execute many flyovers on the stretch within the prescribed time, including Thokkottu and Pumpwell in Mangaluru, Karavali Circle in Udupi, and Shasri Circle in Kundapur.

Thokkottu and Karavali Circle flyovers are complete now while Shastri Circle flyover as well as the four-lane road within Kundapur town are still incomplete. Similarly, a small bridge and portion of the road in Padubidri too is yet to be completed.

District in-charge minister Kota Srinivas Pojjary and MP Nalin Kumar Kateel inaugurated the long-pending Flyover

MLA Vedavayas Kamath, MLA Bharath Shetty were also present on the occasion.
