Party hopper Yogeshwara to quit Cong again; may join BJP or JD(S)

Bengaluru, Oct 14: Film actor-turned-politician C P Yogeshwara, who is considered a party hopper in political circles, is now all set to change the party once again.

Yogeshwara was a forest minister when Yeddyurappa was chief minister of Karnataka. He had quit the BJP during the collapse of its government in Karnataka and won the 2013 Assembly election from Channapatna on a Samajwadi Party ticket and later joined the Congress when it formed a government.

Yogeshwara’s political life has been full of filmy twists. He started his political career as an independent candidate, then joined Congress, then SP and then migrated to BJP.

Citing constant interference by his long-time political rival Energy Minister D K Shivakumar, and his brother — MP D K Suresh — Yogeshwara said he has valid reasons to quit the party. Though he has contributed to strengthening the Congress, the state leaders have not taken him into confidence, he told this paper.

Yogeshwara said the party had given opportunities to many leaders from the Mysuru region, but he had not been taken into confidence. “While MLC H M Revanna was inducted into the Cabinet, former minister C M Lingappa was nominated as the MLC by the party,” he said.

“I am very pained by the manner in which I have been treated. I have made up my mind to quit the Congress,” he added.

He said JD(S) state president H D Kumaraswamy had approached him a few months ago asking him to join the party. Yogeeshwara hopes to contest from either Channapatna or Maddur Assembly constituency in the next election. "I haven't made up my mind about my future plans. I will take an appropriate decision on October 22after consulting my followers," he said.

Kumaraswamy, however, denied that he had approached Yogeeshwara. “I have not spoken to him. It is not true that the party has agreed to field him from Maddur,” added Kumaraswamy.

Varun Bhopala (34), a resident of Sarakki in JP Nagar, was attacked while he was on his way to his father's shop near JC Road after attending a pro-CAA event organised by the RSS and other Hindutva organisations on December 22, 2019.

Police commissioner Bhaskar Rao said the arrested are Irfan alias Mohammed Irfan (33), Syed Akbar alias Mechanic Akbar (46), Syed Siddiq Akbar (30), Akbar Basha (27), Sanaulla Sharif (28) and Sadiq UL Ameen (39) - all residents of KG Halli in East and North Bengaluru.

Rao said the arrested wanted to attack and kill the leaders who took part in the pro-CAA event. They initially pelted seven stones to scatter the crowd so that they can attack the leaders, but they failed. Later, they saw Varun walking out of the crowd wearing a saffron shirt. So the arrested followed him and attacked him with lethal weapons. Assuming he is dead, the gang fled on their bikes towards Bidadi.
